Chapter 6 of 10
The Laughing Legion

“Neither,” Kavi stated, his voice devoid of its usual lilt, flat as a tomb slab. The words reverberated not just in the air, but through the fractured core of his shattered imprint itself. “[ECHO PROTOCOL: UNRECOGNIZED INPUT. REPEAT SELECTION.]”
“I said neither,” Kavi growled, the easy smile dissolving from his face like dust in a gale. His eyes, usually dancing with mockery, now burned with an ancient, terrifying resolve. “I don’t accept a rigged game, and I don’t accept dying for a ghost’s failure. This is *my* timeline. *My* Nirupa. And *my* choice.”
“[ECHO MANDATE: REALITY-THREAD STABILITY CRITICAL. PRIME DIRECTIVE VIOLATION DETECTED. IMMEDIATE SANCTION REQUIRED.]” The system's response was not melancholic poetry, but a stark, digital shriek that clawed at the edges of Kavi’s vision. A shimmering web of green fissures erupted across his interface, obscuring the Paths. “[ECHO PROTOCOL: FORCED REINITIALIZATION COMMENCING.]”
Cold fury locked Kavi's spine rigid. The threads of his being, the memories he had painstakingly stitched back together, began to unravel. His past self had made him a puppet, and now the puppet master’s ghost was trying to pull the strings one last time. Not today.
“Oh, no, you don’t,” he snarled, a low, guttural sound that startled even Nirupa. He smashed his fist against the invisible interface, sparks lashing out from his palm. The green cracks spiderwebbed wider, then began to *shatter*. “[ECHO MANDATE: FATAL ERROR. CORE INTEGRITY COMPROMISED.]”
From the Null-Rift above, an abyssal shriek split the vault. The tear in reality pulsed, disgorging not merely a few skirmishers, but an ocean of fiends. Swarms of scuttling vermin, their carapace plates rattling like broken glass, poured onto the sky-serpent’s petrified ribcage, followed by hulking, horned Rift-Brutes whose leaps shook the walkway. Their single-minded focus: the shimmering, crystalline conduit bridging their outcrop to the bastion.
“The lifeline! They’re going for the bridge!” Nirupa yelled, drawing her twin blades. “Kavi, we need to fall back! There are too many!”
Kavi didn’t reply. His gaze was fixed on the oncoming deluge, his usual smirk utterly absent. Instead, a chilling smile, devoid of humor, stretched his lips. He felt a surge of raw, necrotic force ignite within him, a dark, primal wrath that pulsed with the broken Echo Mandate. It wasn’t a skill, not a spell; it was a pure, unfiltered expression of defiance.
He threw his arms wide, and a torrent of obsidian force, crackling with green lightning, ripped through the air. It was not directed at the invaders; it was an expulsion of sheer defiance that scoured the air clean of the Null-Rift’s oppressive aura. The spectral vision of the Mandate, fractured and screaming, flickered out of existence around him, replaced by a dark, empty canvas.
“[ECHO MANDATE: CORE FUNCTIONS OF REALITY-THREAD MANIPULATION ARE NOW UNBOUND. ALL PROTOCOLS DEACTIVATED. WARNING: SOUL-STRAIN LEVELS CRITICAL.]” The system’s voice was a barely audible, broken fragment, before it too, vanished.
The glowing conduit began to groan as the Rift-Brutes crashed into it. Nirupa carved a bloody path toward the nearest cluster of horrors, her blades a blur of silver. But for every fiend she felled, three more surged forward, their eyes fixed on the bridge. A particularly enormous Rift-Brute, its hide like scorched obsidian, spun and hammered its clawed fist into the crystalline column. A crack, thin as spider silk, appeared.
“Kavi!” Nirupa shouted, pinned against the petrified bone wall, her daggers deflecting strikes from three six-legged carapaces. Her back was to the void, and the air hummed with their malice.
Kavi moved. No witty retort, no sarcastic jab. Just pure, unadulterated motion. He dropped his usual fighting stance, opting for a fluid, almost mechanical series of movements that Vith would have approved of. He didn’t dodge with flair, but with cold, calculated efficiency, each step placing him exactly where he needed to be. His spectral minion, Vith, materialized beside him, phasing through a Rift-Brute to rip out its ethereal core. “Efficiency, Kavi. No wasted motion. Every kill counts.”
Krodhas, meanwhile, was a whirlwind of joyous destruction. “FOR THE NEW MASTER! DEATH TO THE FALSE GODS!” he roared, his twin axes blurring as he cleaved through demon after demon, creating a bloody wake for Kavi. The God of War was in his element, a gruesome, overeager vanguard.
Kavi waded into the fray, a dark vortex amidst the chaos. He didn’t speak, didn’t grin. He moved like a machine built for slaughter. His hands, crackling with necrotic power, became instruments of death. He parried a claw, then plunged his palm into an invader's chest, searing the core. The beast collapsed, dissolving into soot.
Before the soot could disperse, Kavi snapped his fingers with a dry click, whipping a dark tendril around the fading remnants. With a violent tug, he’d rip the fading soul, binding it to his will. In a flare of viridian light, the fiend reassembled.
Not as a silent, mindless thrall. A restored crawler, its carapace still smoking, screeched, “Agh, my good eye! Who did that? Oh, right, *me*.” It wheeled on its former pack, razor legs slicing through chitin. A Rift-Brute, dragged back from the brink, crashed its fists together. “Still here, eh? Good. More to smash!” It headbutted another brute clean off the ledge.
Kavi did not simply raise them; he raised their bedlam. He stalked the horde, butchering and animating in rhythmic succession. Each flick of his wrist, each searing touch, added another screaming, bickering, fanatically loyal demon to his nascent army. The spiritual strain was immense; his vision swam with silver points of agony, his muscles screaming. His blood thrummed with the raw power of unchained death, a power that threatened to rip him apart from the inside.
“Faster, Kavi! That Brute is shattering the bridge!” Vith urged, phasing through a newly reassembled crawler, whose squawk of “Hey, watch the phasing, pal!” was ignored.
Kavi did not need the reminder. He darted between the reanimated fiends who squabbled even as they tore into the rift-spawn. “Hey, ugly, you took my kill!” “Mine now, you bone-bag!” Their shouts echoed through the air, a cacophony of demonic banter now directed at the Null-Rift’s forces.
Nirupa watched, transfixed, as Kavi stood amidst the maelstrom. Horrors, both living and repurposed, crashed against each other in a wall of chitin and shadow. Krodhas was at Kavi’s side, a loyal, bloody sentinel, roaring challenges as he cleared a path through the enemy.
Kavi closed his eyes for a split second, a groan escaping his lips, before they snapped open, burning with a cold fire. He cast out his hand, and a hundred dark filaments hooked into every dying beast. Their fragmented spirits ripped free and surged into his marrow. The crushing weight of vital force threatened to collapse his ribs.
“[ECHO MANDATE: SOUL-STRAIN EXCEEDS MAXIMUM SUSTAINABLE THRESHOLD. BODY INTEGRITY COMPROMISED. DECAY COMMENCING.]”
Nirupa saw it then. A thin wisp of grey smoke, like ash from a dying fire, curled from Kavi’s outstretched fingers. His skin, where the smoke emerged, seemed to lose its color, turning a chalky, pale grey. More tendrils of smoke began to drift from his arms, his chest. He was holding too many souls, wielding too much power. His own body, the fragile vessel of his unyielding will, was beginning to turn to dust.
