Chapter 5 of 10
The Coward in the Core
1.2k words
Kavi stared at the demon head, then at Krodhas, whose enthusiasm could crack granite. Nirupa’s hand, which had just brushed his cheek, retracted as if burned. The raw tenderness of the moment evaporated, replaced by the acrid tang of demon ichor and the cacophony of an overeager demigod.
“A talking head, you say?” Kavi deadpanned, raising an eyebrow at the dripping trophy. “Did it give you a recipe, too? I hear demon brains are quite the delicacy this season.”
Krodhas preened, his lone eye glinting. “It screamed, My Lord! A message for *you*! It spoke of the Rift’s Core! Said your… ‘other self’ awaits!” He puffed out his chest, oblivious to Kavi’s sudden stillness.
Nirupa stepped between Kavi and the boisterous minion, her gaze sharp. “Krodhas, put that thing down before it stains the entire barracks. And ‘other self’?” Her eyes flickered to Kavi, a silent question passing between them.
Kavi forced a grin. “Just a particularly clingy ex, I imagine. Always showing up when you least expect them.” The deflection came on instinct, though cold dread knotted in his gut. *Rift’s Core. Past self.* The pieces were clicking into a terrifying mosaic. The vision of Nirupa dying, the mural of his paralyzed doppelganger holding the Rift open—it all funneled to this.
“The Rift’s Core then,” Kavi declared, the humor fading from his voice. “If ‘I’ am waiting there, then that’s where we go. Krodhas, put that head on a spike. We’ll make it a mascot.”
Minutes later, the small procession picked through the Bastion’s rib-vaulted corridors toward the nearest transit line. Kavi led, Maw-Bone clanking merrily behind him, occasionally trying to trip Krodhas. Vith phased in and out of the walls beside Nirupa, offering unsolicited combat advice.
“You should lead with a feint, Kavi. That lumbering oaf needs to learn positioning, not just brute force,” Vith hissed, his spectral form shimmering.
“He’s a God of War, Vith, not a ballet dancer,” Kavi retorted, scanning the crumbling tunnel ahead. “His positioning is ‘where the enemy isn’t’.”
Nirupa, twin blades drawn, moved with silent precision. “The lines are usually guarded by Void-Prowlers. They’re fast, Kavi. Don’t underestimate them.”
They emerged onto a jagged shard of rock suspended over the abyssal drop, connected to another island by an ancient, humming bridge of solid violet light. The air crackled with power, and the distant, hungry roar of the Null-Rift echoed across the chasm.
“Ah, fresh meat!” Krodhas bellowed, his axe already raised. Three dark, sinuous forms detached themselves from the shadow of a petrified spire—Void-Prowlers. Their elongated limbs ended in razor talons, and their faceless crests bore only a solitary, glowing crimson orb. They moved with terrifying speed.
“Maw-Bone, engage the right!” Kavi commanded, pointing. “Krodhas, draw their attention to the center! Vith, scout for flanks!”
Maw-Bone intercepted the first prowler, meeting claws with bone spurs in a rapid clash of parries and slashes. Krodhas roared, slamming his axe into stone and staggering the central beast with the shockwave, while Nirupa met the third head-on, spinning between raking talons.
Kavi closed the distance, firing bolts of necrotic blight from his palm at the beast Krodhas had dazed. It was fast, recovering its balance, but the God of War’s massive form blocked its escape. Vith phased through the demon, a frost-rimed silhouette leaving frost across its flank to ruin its footing. Kavi seized the opening, channeling a concentrated burst that tore through its chest.
[FATALITY: PROWLER CORE TERMINATED]
[ECHO MANDATE: A fragile echo seeks its source. The broken thread yearns for the loom.]
A small, iridescent crystal dropped from the carcass, trembling against the fractured shale. Kavi picked it up, a strange pull emanating from its core. The moment his fingers closed around it, the crystal dissolved into his skin, and the world fractured.
He stood no longer on the transit bridge. He was in a pristine chamber, opulent and untouched by the Null-Rift. A soft, warm light filtered through a window, illuminating a figure slumped in a grand, ornate chair. The figure’s legs lay useless, twisted at an unnatural angle. His face, gaunt and shadowed, was undeniably Kavi’s.
Before him, on a plinth, lay another body. Nirupa. Her face was serene, devoid of life, a single crimson bloom staining the pristine white tunic over her heart. Kavi felt a scream tear at his phantom throat, but no sound emerged. The grief radiating from the paralyzed Kavi was a physical force, crushing the air from the room.
The past Kavi lifted a hand to her motionless hair. “I failed you,” he murmured, his voice hoarse. “Every cycle. Every turn. This world takes everything.” His gaze, haunted and desperate, fell upon a shimmering, ethereal apparatus near his chair. “But this time… this time, it ends differently.”
He activated the device. A cascade of light enveloped him, and Kavi felt a primal terror grip him. “To shatter this loop, I have to become someone else. Someone unburdened by grief. A scoundrel who scours the ruins without flinching.”
The light intensified, swirling into a maelstrom of memories, emotions, and intentions. Kavi felt a sickening lurch as he realized what he was witnessing. His past self, wracked by an unbearable grief, was meticulously carving out his own identity, erasing the man he was, programming a new one.
“Let him loot,” Past Kavi whispered, his voice fading into the light. “Let him survive. Let him find the Core. He will reset it. He will forget the cost, forget the burden. He will be free to destroy, to rebuild, to save you.”
The memory collapsed, slamming Kavi back into his own skin. His boots struck the glowing bridge, knees buckling as bile and sulfur hit the back of his throat. Nirupa was at his side in an instant, her hand on his arm, her voice urgent. “Kavi! What happened? You froze!”
He looked at her, truly looked, seeing not just his fierce ally, but the ghost of a love lost countless times. His stomach churned. *Loot and survive.* His entire drive, his relentless sarcasm, his avoidance of true feeling – it was all a programmed directive. A shield built by a coward who couldn’t face the end, who couldn’t bear to lose her again.
“A coward,” Kavi spat. “My predecessor was a coward.” His knuckles went white, nails biting palms. He was a puppet dancing on the strings of an architect who ran from his own pain.
No. Not anymore. He wouldn’t be a tool. He wouldn’t sacrifice this Nirupa, this world, for a ghost. He would break the cycle, even if it meant breaking himself.
[ECHO MANDATE: REALITY-THREAD DIVERGENCE DETECTED. PRIME DIRECTIVE VIOLATED.]
[ECHO PROTOCOL: CONFLICT DETECTED. CHOOSE A PATH.]
[ECHO PROTOCOL: PATH A: ACCEPT THE RESET AND LIVE, PRESERVING THE GRAND CYCLE.]
[ECHO PROTOCOL: PATH B: REJECT THE PROGRAMMING AND DIE WITH THIS TIMELINE.]
The choice blazed in his mind, an impossible chasm opening at his feet. Kavi looked up at Nirupa, her grip bracing his sleeve, her breath steady against the void. He had his answer.
