Chapter 7 of 35

Shadows in the Dust

The soothing glow of the spiritual pool reflected in Lylin’s eyes as the refined liquid seeped through his pores, fortifying his vital channels. His physical body, once broken and impaled upon a desolate rock, now felt firm and revitalized. Inside his mindscape, the system interface pulsed with a clean, steady light. SYSTEM UPDATE: BASE ESTABLISHED: SINKHOLE SANCTUARY. DAILY ENERGY REGENERATION RATE: +20%. HOST PHYSICAL CONDITION: FULLY RESTORED. Lylin stood up, drying his hands as he turned toward the Scholar. The clone was kneeling by the metallic disc, its fingers tracing the faded runes with incredible precision. Blue light flickered between the Scholar’s fingertips as it mapped the array’s internal damage. "Progress?" Lylin asked, his tone crisp. "The core framework of the transmission array is intact, Host," the Scholar reported without looking up. "However, the primary energy conduit is fractured. I require two things to restore basic monitoring functions: high-density spirit minerals from the surface and three days of uninterrupted calculation." Lylin glanced back at the entrance. The Warrior clone had already sealed the primary opening with heavy stone, leaving only a narrow, concealed crevice for ventilation. Through the shared link, Lylin could feel the brutal heat vibrating just beneath the Warrior's skin—a silent, lethal guard ready to incinerate any intruder. "You will have your time," Lylin said smoothly. "Tomorrow at dawn, the third clone will be born. We will expand our reach beyond these ruins." He walked over to a quiet corner of the chamber and sat cross-legged on a raised stone platform. For the first time since his arrival in this brutal Immortal World, he had a moment of true silence. His mind, always racing, began to construct the overarching blueprint of his survival. He was not interested in simple martial dominance or grand, loud titles that invited the wrath of ancient sects. He would build an unseen leviathan. The Scholar would handle intelligence and array networks; the Warrior would provide immediate enforcement; future clones would infiltrate mercantile guilds, cultivation sects, and shadow markets across the eleven human worlds. A faint vibration rippled through the ley-line pool, causing tiny azure ripples to dance across the surface. Lylin opened his eyes instantly. Through the Warrior’s senses stationed at the hidden ventilation shaft, a subtle shift in the outside world became clear. The heavy, choking grey dust of the wasteland was swirling violently. A group of three figures, clad in tattered, blood-stained cultivator robes, was hurriedly navigating the ruins above. They were wounded, exhausted, and fleeing from something far more dangerous than the local beasts. "Keep them under observation," Lylin commanded silently through the link, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Let us see what brings living mortals to this grave."
