Chapter 26 of 35
The Shadow over Black-Grit
882 words
Silence hung over the central square of Black-Grit Outpost, thick and suffocating. The body of "Iron-Jaw" Kael lay slumped against the shattered cobblestones, his eyes wide with uncomprehending horror, while the eight Blood-Skull thugs beside him collapsed like lifeless puppets.
Translucent, pale-blue wisps of soul essence rose from the corpses, flowing directly into the open, chained tome held by Clone Eighteen in the shadows.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION:
SOUL HARVEST COMPLETE.
TARGETS ASSIMILATED: 1 FOUNDATION ESTABLISHMENT, 8 BODY REFINEMENT.
ENERGY ABSORBED: +220 UNITS.
HOST CURRENT ENERGY: 2,020 / 250.
The surrounding crowd of rogue cultivators and black-market merchants stood frozen in absolute terror. No one dared to breathe. In less than two minutes, the tyrant who had ruled the outpost with an iron fist for five years had been reduced to a rotting corpse alongside his elite guard.
Clone Four, the Merchant, stepped forward into the center of the quiet square. He adjusted his pristine silver-trimmed sleeves, his expression as warm and polite as if he were merely opening a standard morning market.
"Gentlemen," the Merchant announced, his voice amplified by a subtle wave of spiritual energy that carried effortlessly to every corner of the canyon. "The Blood-Skull Gang’s taxation policy is officially dissolved. From this moment forth, Black-Grit Outpost operates under the protection and administration of the Shadow-Rest Association."
He gestured to the velvet-lined tray of high-purity pills and runic daggers resting on his display stand.
"Our trade rules are simple: absolute quality, fair prices, and unyielding order. Those who conduct honest business will find our association a generous partner. Those who attempt extortion or theft..." He glanced down casually at Kael’s liquefying remains. "...will serve as fuel for our growth."
"Hail the Shadow-Rest Association!" a lone rogue cultivator shouted from the front of the crowd, bowing frantically. Within seconds, the entire square erupted into unanimous, terrified cheers of submission.
Through the shared inter-realm link, Lylin sat atop his obsidian dais in the Sinkhole Sanctuary, thirty miles beneath the surface of the Azure Cloud Domain. The sensory feed of a second world’s trade hub integrated into his consciousness as smoothly as a breathing cycle.
SYSTEM UPDATE:
TERRITORY INCORPORATED: BLACK-GRIT OUTPOST (SHADOW-VEIL REALM).
OUTER PROXIES RECRUITED: 120 ROGUE CULTIVATORS (MIND ANCHOR IN PROGRESS VIA CLONE FOURTEEN).
DAILY DIRECT ENERGY YIELD: INCREASED TO 2,200 UNITS/DAY.
"Scholar, Steward," Lylin commanded silently across the dimensional divide.
"We hear you, Host," the Scholar and Steward clones responded in unison.
"Deploy thirty mind-anchored proxies from Cloud-Spire City through the Planar Anchor Array. Establish our commercial headquarters in Black-Grit Outpost. Begin processing the volcanic quartz and raw spirit-ore mines previously controlled by Kael."
"By your will, Host," the Steward replied. "Within three days, the Shadow-Rest Association will completely monopolize the trade routes connecting the southern border to the central cities of the Shadow-Veil Realm."
Meanwhile, back in the subterranean sanctuary beneath the Shattered Ridge, the daily system cycle reached its completion once more.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION:
DAILY REFRESH COMPLETE.
HOST ENERGY RESTORED: 250/250.
AVAILABLE CLONES: 3/3.
CURRENT ACTIVE CLONES: 20.
Lylin stood up from his throne. The dark-gold aura around his body hummed with the weight of twenty specialized entities operating seamlessly across two distinct human worlds.
"CREATE CLONES."
Three hundred units of energy drained from the system's reservoir. Three distinct vortices of dark, astral energy erupted beside the deep azure pool.
Three new figures stepped out of the swirling mist:
Clone Twenty-One: A calm, sharp-eyed scholar carrying a silver astrolabe—a Star Seer / Celestial Array Master possessing the talent Astral Tracking (locates high-tier realm passages and ancient hidden grottoes across planetary boundaries).
Clone Twenty-Two: A heavily armored, faceless juggernaut wielding two massive war-hammers inscribed with gravity runes—a Siege Breaker / Vanguard possessing the talent Fortress Crush (bypasses and shatters high-grade defensive sect arrays).
Clone Twenty-Three: A quiet figure in dark-green robes whose body radiated an ethereal, symbiotic connection with wild beasts and dragon-vein spirit beasts—a Beast Master / Domain Wrangler possessing the talent Spirit Taming (subdues and commands native spirit beasts to form autonomous monster tides).
SYSTEM NOTICE:
CLONE TWENTY-ONE GENERATED: CLASS - STAR SEER (TALENT: ASTRAL TRACKING).
CLONE TWENTY-TWO GENERATED: CLASS - SIEGE BREAKER (TALENT: FORTRESS CRUSH).
CLONE TWENTY-THREE GENERATED: CLASS - BEAST MASTER (TALENT: SPIRIT TAMING).
Lylin looked at his twenty-three extensions. The architecture of his unseen shadow empire was expanding from simple survival and infiltration into full-scale inter-realm conquest.
"Clone Twenty-Three," Lylin commanded coldly, looking at the Beast Master. "Enter the volcanic wilderness surrounding the Shadow-Veil Realm's southern border. Tame the wild spirit beasts inhabiting the lava caves. Form our first hidden beast vanguard."
"Your will, Host," the Beast Master bowed, vanishing into the spatial portal toward the Shadow-Veil Realm.
Lylin walked to the edge of the obsidian dais, looking deep into the glowing azure water. His roots were buried deep in two human worlds, his resources were boundless, and his phantoms walked unseen among mortals and cultivators alike.
Far above the clouds of the Azure Cloud Domain, high on the highest petrified peak, the colossal three-headed serpent slowly opened all six of its liquid-gold eyes. It looked toward the south, sensing the wild spirit beasts of a completely different realm bending their knees to an unseen master.
The shadow was no longer just a web—it was an imperial tide, sweeping quietly across the eleven human worlds.
