Chapter 25 of 35
The Blood-Iron Market
791 words
Ten miles south of the Whispering Woods, nestled in a desolate volcanic canyon, lay Black-Grit Outpost—a lawless trade hub where rogue cultivators, exiled sect disciples, and black-market smugglers from across the Shadow-Veil Realm traded plundered goods. The air was thick with the reek of sulfur, unrefined spirit-ore, and stale blood.
Walking through the chaotic, torchlit muddy thoroughfare was Clone Four, the Merchant. Dressed in refined indigo robes trimmed with silver silk, his posture exuded the calm, unbothered air of an aristocratic trader. Flanking him were Clone Ten (the Guardian) disguised as a silent, hulking mercenary, and Clone Thirteen (the Curse Master) wrapped in hooded, ash-grey rags.
Through the Merchant’s eyes, Lylin sat cross-legged atop his obsidian dais in the Azure Cloud Domain’s Sinkhole Sanctuary, thirty miles beneath the surface of a distant world.
"Host," the Merchant communicated smoothly through the inter-realm link. "Black-Grit Outpost is controlled by the Blood-Skull Gang, a ruthless coalition of late-stage Body Refinement and early Foundation Establishment renegades. They tax every stall and enforce order through terror. Their leader, 'Iron-Jaw' Kael, claims ownership over the local quartz and spirit-mineral trade."
"Establish our presence," Lylin ordered coldly, his voice echoing across the spatial divide. "Offer them high-purity pills and refined spirit-weapons. If they accept, we drain their pockets. If they attempt to take by force, we harvest their souls."
"Understood, Host," the Merchant replied.
The Merchant stepped into the center of the trading square, where a dozen armed Blood-Skull enforcers sat drinking fermented spirit-liquor around an open bonfire. With a flick of his sleeve, the Merchant unrolled a velvet-lined wooden tray. On it rested ten porcelain bottles of ninety-five-percent pure Healing and Spirit-Replenishing Pills—refined by Clone Five (the Alchemist)—alongside three iron daggers inscribed with microscopic speed-boosting runes forged by Clone Eight (the Blacksmith).
The pure, medicinal fragrance exploded into the sulfurous air. Within seconds, dozens of rogue cultivators crowded around, their eyes wide with disbelief and burning greed.
"Ninety-five percent purity?!" a scarred mercenary gasped, leaning forward. "This... this is sect-grade medicine! Where did you get this?!"
"I am a representative of the Shadow-Rest Association," the Merchant declared, his Golden Tongue talent activating effortlessly, projecting an aura of immense, mysterious prestige. "We deal only in absolute perfection. These pills are thirty percent below standard market price."
Before a trade could be struck, a roar shattered the crowd.
"Clear the way, scum!"
A towering man with a metal plate bolted across his lower jaw shoved through the onlookers, flanked by eight heavily armored thugs. "Iron-Jaw" Kael stared down at the velvet tray, his eyes gleaming with savage avarice.
"Shadow-Rest Association?" Kael sneered, his Foundation Establishment aura flaring threateningly. "Never heard of you. In Black-Grit Outpost, any goods exceeding fifty-percent purity belong to the Blood-Skull Gang by law. Hand over the supply and your storage ring, outsider, or your head stays on a pike tonight."
The crowd backed away rapidly, fearing the inevitable slaughter.
The Merchant clone did not flinch. A warm, disarming smile remained on his face. "Master Kael, business is built on mutual benefit. Violence is... inefficient."
"I don't bargain with corpses!" Kael roared, drawing a massive, two-handed serrated broadsword and swinging it directly at the Merchant's neck.
BOOM.
The attack never reached its target. Clone Ten, the Guardian, stepped forward in a blur, raising his massive, grey-iron shield. The broadsword slammed into the shield, producing a deafening metallic report, but the Guardian did not yield a single inch. The shockwave shattered the cobblestones beneath Kael's boots.
Before Kael could recover his balance, Clone Thirteen, the Curse Master, flicked his wrist from behind his grey hood.
MIASMA TOUCH.
An invisible, untraceable vapor of spatial-decay toxin swept into Kael’s open mouth and nostrils. Kael froze instantly; his face turned a sickly shade of purple, his meridians seized, and his spiritual energy collapsed like a deflated bladder. He dropped his sword, clutching his throat while gasping for air as his internal organs began to liquefy.
The eight Blood-Skull thugs stared in horror, completely unable to comprehend how their Foundation Establishment leader had been paralyzed without a visible blow.
The Merchant stepped forward, looking down at the dying gang leader with cold, polite indifference.
"As I said," the Merchant whispered softly, "violence is inefficient... unless it is ours."
From the shadows of the alleyway behind the thugs, Clone Eighteen (the Soul Collector) opened his iron tome, while Clone Three (the Assassin) merged with the dark.
