Chapter 8 of 10
The Ultimate Lag Spike

Orazhan didn’t hesitate. He ignored the crumbling mosaic courtyard outside the vault, where shrieks dissolved into static. His gaze locked on Tazmeen, whose pupils contracted in sheer, mortal panic. That wouldn’t do. Not when she was finally looking at him like a person and not some enlightened rock. He took a single, uncharacteristically swift step and lunged forward, locking his arms around the knight just as the shimmering null-wave reached them.
“Ugh, seriously?” Orazhan’s voice was muffled, his face pressed into the polished steel of Tazmeen’s shoulder pauldron. “Are these hitboxes even coded right? This feels like connecting across five oceans. My ping must be through the roof.”
Vahram paused his world-devouring purge, an unnatural stutter arresting the void-like breach outside. He gaped as the wave of erasure swept harmlessly *through* Orazhan. It swept over his head, through his limbs, and out the other side, leaving him entirely unharmed, still clutching Tazmeen. The floor beneath them, which had been unraveling into drifting motes, simply… stopped. The pixels hung in the air, static. Tazmeen, shielded by Orazhan’s chest, blinked, her mouth parting as she stared up at him. He had taken the direct hit, and it had done nothing. *Nothing*.
“"What… what is this sorcery?!"” Vahram’s voice boomed, glitching slightly as it rattled across the half-erased sanctuary.
Orazhan pushed off Tazmeen, squinting at the twitching geometric lattice of the chamber. “Sorcery? Nah, just horrible frame drops. Look, the entire render distance is bugged. My character model isn’t even registering. It’s like the server thinks I’m still back in the last zone. This is why I always preferred offline games. No lag.” He clicked his tongue, a soft, annoyed sound.
“But… you should be *gone*! Erased! You were marked for deletion!” Vahram shrieked, his spectral silhouette coalescing into a furious, towering apparition before dissolving back into the geomantic matrix.
Orazhan rubbed his chin, a new, determined glint in his lazy eyes. “Hmm. Null routine failed, huh? Must be a memory leak. Or maybe the host machine is cooked. Time to force a restart, I guess.” He stretched, a loud crack echoing through the vault. “This is going to be annoying, but you know what they say: when in doubt, spam the lowest-cost spell until the system crashes.”
He lifted a hand, palm open. “Alright, let’s try a basic illuminate spell. Just a little glow.” He murmured the incantation, a single, short syllable, more a grumble than a chant: “*Lumen*.”
A pale spark ignited above his palm. It looked utterly insignificant against the backdrop of a crumbling realm. Vahram watched, momentarily baffled, his luminous presence pausing its consumption of a nearby gargoyle statue.
Then Orazhan began to repeat it. “*Lumen. Lumen. Lumen. Lumen. Lumen*.”
Not a slow, rhythmic repetition, but a rapid-fire, almost subliminal burst. His hand blurred, twitching with impossible speed. The air around him began to prickle, not with magic, but with sheer, raw computational overload. One orb became two, then ten, then a hundred. Each one was tiny, no bigger than a firefly, but they were appearing faster than the eye could track. Ten thousand times a second, Orazhan was casting. The stone chamber, already wavering between solid rock and empty void, began to shudder.
“What… what are you doing?!” Vahram shrieked, his voice losing its omnipotent echo, shrinking into a panicked, localized cry. The disintegration of the institute outside ground to a halt. The void-eaten walls froze mid-consumption. Vahram's translucent visage, once everywhere at once, fragmented as it fought to manifest in a dozen locations. His movements became choppy, jerky. He was lagging.
The illumination orbs weren’t just light; they were millions upon millions of concurrent calculations, each one demanding processing power, each one a tiny, self-contained instance of a basic spell. Local space, already stretched thin by Vahram’s merger with the World Engine, groaned under the strain.
The air grew hot, thick with the scent of ozone and burning code. Orazhan’s skin began to flush, a faint sheen of sweat appearing on his brow. The sheer output of energy, however minor each individual spell was, concentrated to this degree, was immense. Tazmeen, shielded by Orazhan, could feel the ambient temperature rising to an unbearable level.
Suddenly, a massive, shadowy form materialized behind Orazhan. Xurash, the Demon Lord, his demonic butler suit now slightly frayed, roared, a sound of infernal agony, and wrapped his colossal, scaly arms around Orazhan. Dark smoke poured from Xurash’s skin, a visible thermal discharge. His body, designed to channel the apocalyptic energies of the abyss, was acting as a living heatsink. His demon blood hissed as it absorbed the raw, uncontrolled magical heat, his eyes glowing like twin furnaces. “My… my master! You… you will not… *combust* on my watch!” he gasped, his voice strained.
“Thanks, Xurash. Knew I kept you around for something,” Orazhan mumbled, not missing a beat in his rapid-fire spell casting. “Man, the frame rate is *terrible* today. My hands are practically glowing.”
Indeed, Orazhan’s hands were now glowing with an intense, pure white light, so bright it hurt to look directly at them. The vault was no longer dimly lit; it was bathed in the light of a thousand miniature suns, each one pulsing with computational demand.
“My… my processes! They are… *stalling*!” Vahram screamed, his voice now a series of broken, stuttering syllables. His forms, scattered across the vault and the vanishing academy, were frozen in place, like a video stream buffering endlessly. A projection of Vahram, halfway through disassembling a wall, hung motionless with arm outstretched and spectral jaw slack. He was experiencing the ultimate lag spike.
Nidab, ever the opportunist, took one look at the frozen Vahram-forms and the screaming nobles trying to escape the crumbling edges of the sanctum, and a manic grin spread across his face. He pulled out a small, ornate ledger and a quill. “Alright, alright, move it! This way to the ‘Un-Glitchified Exit Portal’! Express lane, only five hundred Kels per head! And that’s a discount, considering the world’s about to get wiped clean!” He began herding the terrified, wealthy nobles, who, seeing a desperate chance at survival, fumbled for their coin purses, paying whatever the urchin demanded.
The strain on local reality grew catastrophic. The very air began to crackle, not just with light, but with visible fissures. The sky, already fractured from Orazhan’s earlier 'collision box fix,' couldn’t handle the sheer volume of spam-casted illumination. A deafening *CRACK* ripped through the vault, echoing out into the crumbling school grounds. It wasn’t the sound of stone breaking, but of an entire celestial sphere tearing itself apart. The surviving wings of Yashar, the half-eaten masonry, and Vahram’s suspended duplicates all shuddered. The ceiling of the sanctum exploded upwards, not into the Qalhati sky, but into a swirling vortex of cosmic dust and impossible colours.
Through the newly formed, colossal tear in the sky, three immense, ethereal forms descended. They were beings of pure starlight and void, their eyes like distant galaxies, their movements slow and deliberate, yet infinitely powerful. Each carried a staff of spiraling stardust. They were the Cosmic Overseers, the universe’s true ‘Developers,’ and they had come to purge this corrupted realm.
One of the Overseers, a being of emerald nebulas, raised a hand towards the vault. A voice, ancient and resonant, echoed not just through the air, but through Orazhan’s very bones. It was a voice that spoke in the language of universal code, a voice that broadcast an update across all existence:
