Chapter 8: Dwarven Gold and Corporate Cold
1.3k words
Steam hissed from massive brass valves lining the cavern walls, carrying the scent of sulfur and roasted barley.
Elias adjusted his collar, squinting up at the colossal stone arches that spanned the ceiling of Ironreach.
Thousands of glowing crystals illuminated the subterranean metropolis, casting a warm amber glow over bustling market plazas and towering iron fortresses.
Jasper let out a low whistle, his massive frame dwarfed for once by the sheer, gargantuan scale of the dwarven capital.
"Reminds me of Tokyo Station during rush hour," Jasper muttered, nudging Elias with an elbow the size of a ham. "Just, you know, with more axes and fewer depressing suits."
"And significantly better air quality, surprisingly," Elias agreed, dusting off his leather vest. "Though I could do without the constant seismic rumbles."
Standing at the edge of the entry platform, the two brothers took in the subterranean marvel.
Broad stone bridges spanned bottomless chasms, connecting hollowed-out stalactites that served as multi-story apartment complexes.
Runes flared along the edges of the pathways, pulsing with a faint blue light that kept the ambient temperature comfortable.
"Where's this legendary brewery?" Jasper asked, his stomach rumbling loud enough to startle a passing goblin merchant. "I didn't spend three days surviving on dried rations and suppressive ring pain just to starve in a hole."
"According to the map we bought from that sketchy half-orc, it's just past the smelting district," Elias said, pointing toward a massive plaza where thick black smoke was being sucked into giant mechanical vents.
---
Heavy bronze doors stood open ahead of them, venting the delicious aroma of roasted hops and grilled meats.
Laughter bounced off the polished obsidian walls, mingling with the clinking of heavy metal tankards and the lively strumming of a dwarven lute.
Sitting around a massive wooden table in the center of the tavern were some of the most stunning patrons they had ever seen.
"Well, aren't you two a bit tall for these parts?" one of the elven women purred, her emerald eyes tracking Jasper's massive shoulders.
"We're just a pair of simple travelers looking for the best brew in the realms," Jasper replied, flashing a brilliant, easygoing smile that had been honed through years of corporate client entertainment.
Her name was Vanya, a merchant dealing in rare silks, while her companion, a stunning human woman named Clara, wore a rogue's leather armor that clung tightly to her curves.
Squinting, Elias noticed another companion—Helga, a dwarven lass with rich copper braids and eyes like polished amber.
"Then you've come to the right place, big guy!" Helga boomed, slamming her tankard down with a hearty laugh. "Bring these two the Void Stout! On my tab, for now!"
Moments later, two massive, obsidian-stone mugs were placed before them.
Jet-black liquid, thick as motor oil but topped with a creamy, star-white foam, swirled inside the mugs.
Jasper took a deep, greedy gulp, his eyes widening in pure, unadulterated bliss.
"Oh, sweet mercy," Jasper gasped, wiping foam from his lips. "This is it. This is what we died for, Elias."
"Incredible," Elias murmured, savoring the rich, chocolatey bitterness that melted into a smooth, warming heat down his throat. "It's like a stout mixed with liquid magic."
Hours slipped away in a blur of laughter, light flirting, and the intoxicating warmth of the dwarven ale.
Clara leaned in close to Elias, her fingers tracing the light fabric of his shirt. "You don't look like a typical miner, handsome. What's your story?"
"We're just trying to find a quiet place to retire," Elias smiled, gently clinking his glass against hers. "No stress, no overtime. Just beautiful company."
Vanya giggled, resting her chin on Jasper's massive bicep. "With muscles like these, I highly doubt you do much resting."
"Hey, these are strictly for show," Jasper chuckled, flexing playfully. "I'm a pacifist. A lover, not a fighter."
This was the retirement they had dreamed of. No reports. No endless Zoom calls. Just premium alcohol and beautiful women who actually laughed at their jokes.
Suddenly, the illusion shattered when the burly dwarven bartender slammed a thick slate tablet onto their table.
"That'll be four hundred gold pieces for the premium reserves, lads," the bartender grunted, his eyes narrowing.
Helga winced, checking her own coin pouch. "Ah, sorry boys. I might have overshot my budget on that last round of dragon-fire whiskey."
Both brothers exchanged a quick, calculating look.
"We need a quick gig," Elias muttered under his breath.
---
Shouting from the tavern's bulletin board caught Jasper's attention.
A gruff dwarven overseer named Torin was pacing back and forth, waving a fistful of gold coins.
"Five hundred gold for anyone who can clear the collapsed shaft in Sector 4!" Torin yelled to the crowd. "My miners are trapped on the other side, and the steam pipes are leaking!"
Jasper stood up, towering over the surrounding dwarves, and walked over to the overseer.
"We'll take the job," Jasper announced, giving Vanya and Helga a reassuring wink.
Torin looked Jasper up and down, skepticism written all over his rugged, soot-stained face. "You? You've got the build, but that's solid bedrock that collapsed. It'll take a team of ten men with pickaxes a whole day."
"Give me ten minutes," Jasper smiled.
Walking down into the damp, echoing tunnels of Sector 4, they were accompanied by a small crowd of curious onlookers from the tavern.
Blocking the main tunnel was a massive pile of jagged, heavy boulders, some as large as carriages.
"Act like you're struggling," Elias whispered, leaning against the damp cave wall. "We are E-tier adventurers, remember? If you lift a three-ton boulder like it's a pillow, people are going to start asking questions."
"Right, right. Corporate compliance," Jasper grinned.
Jasper approached the first massive rock, planting his feet wide.
"Hnnnngh! Oh, the sheer weight!" Jasper roared dramatically, squeezing his eyes shut and forcing a grimace onto his face.
Underneath his massive palms, a dark, localized gravity field flared quietly.
S-Tier Dark Magic surged through his fingertips, completely neutralizing the gravitational pull on the boulder.
Jasper lifted the three-ton rock over his head, trembling his arms on purpose to simulate intense physical strain.
"By the ancestors!" Torin gasped, his jaw dropping so low it nearly touched his belt buckle.
"Look at those muscles!" Helga cheered, clapping her hands.
Jasper let out an exaggerated cry of effort, tossing the massive boulder casually down the side tunnel, where it landed with a heavy, muffled thud.
"Whew! That almost got my back!" Jasper panted, wiping fake sweat from his forehead.
Elias rolled his eyes, muttering, "A bit too theatrical, Jasper. Tone it down ten percent."
"Got it, boss," Jasper whispered back, moving to the next boulder.
For the next five minutes, Jasper put on a masterclass in physical theater.
He groaned, he grunted, and he flexed his massive chest, all while effortlessly tossing boulders that should have required a hydraulic crane to budge.
Dwarves cheered louder with every rock cleared.
Vanya and Clara watched with glittering eyes, thoroughly impressed by the display of raw, masculine power.
---
As Jasper cleared the final layer of debris, Elias stepped closer to the exposed rock face.
Strange, rhythmic sensations vibrated through the soles of his boots.
Elias closed his eyes, pressing a palm against the cold, damp granite.
It wasn't the natural, chaotic shifting of tectonic plates or the warm pulse of earth magic.
A steady, high-frequency hum vibrated through the stone, pulsing at perfect, precise intervals.
His S-Tier Light Magic, highly sensitive to structured patterns and divine energy, reacted instantly, sending a cold shiver down his spine.
"This feeling..." Elias whispered, his eyes widening.
Memories of endless nights spent in the basement of their Tokyo headquarters, surrounded by blinking green lights and the oppressive drone of mainframe servers, flashed through his mind.
"Jasper, hold on," Elias warned, his voice losing all its casual humor.
"Just one more, bro," Jasper grunts, grabbing a final, massive slab of bedrock with an exaggerated wail of simulated pain.
"No, stop! Don't touch that!" Elias shouted.
A sharp, deafening snap echoed through the cavern as dust exploded upward. The cavern floor suddenly gives way, dropping Jasper into a subterranean chamber filled with thousands of dormant, glowing white cocoons.
