Chapter 7: The Price of Lazy

Smoke drifted from the silver medallion resting on a flat stone. Elias poked it with a dry branch, his dirty-blonde hair falling into his eyes as he leaned closer. He frowned, watching the tiny, intricate runes on the metal pulse with a faint, rhythmic gold glow. Jasper grunted, nursing a bruised shoulder from their earlier scrap. He sat on a rotting log, his massive frame making the wood groan under his weight. Holding the medallion with a pair of makeshift wooden tongs, Elias squinted at the center of the sigil. His analytical, salaryman brain immediately began dissecting the magical flow. A low, annoying hum vibrated through the metal, matching the frequency of his own internal light magic reservoir. "We are being tracked," Elias said, tossing the branch into their small campfire. "This isn't a simple decorative pendant. It is a localized homing transmitter tuned specifically to high-tier magical signatures." Heavy silence fell over the dark forest, broken only by the crackle of burning pine. Bright gold light suddenly flared in the sky above them, cutting through the thick canopy of trees like a searchlight. Four elite Sol-Sentinels descended from the clouds, their bodies composed of hollow, white-gold armor filled with burning celestial plasma. They rode on constructs of pure light, hovering several feet above the damp earth. "Drop the relic and surrender, anomalies," one of the sentinels commanded, its voice sounding like two grinding brass plates. "Your S-tier signatures have been flagged for termination by the High Arbiters." Jasper didn't even stand up at first. He just sighed, rubbing his temples as if dealing with an annoying middle-manager who had caught him taking an extended lunch break. Black lightning began to crackle around Jasper's thick, meaty knuckles as he finally rose to his feet. He towered over the average man, a mountain of raw, destructive potential. Elias sighed too, stepping back to give his partner room. He hated getting his clothes dirty, especially after they had just managed to wash the smell of stale beer out of their shirts. One of the sentinels lunged forward, thrusting a spear of solid light directly at Jasper's chest. A massive, dark gravity well erupted from Jasper's palm. He caught the spearhead with his bare hand, the black energy instantly eroding the light construct into harmless, fading sparks. With a brutal twist of his wrist, Jasper pulled the sentinel off its mount and slammed it into the dirt. The impact shattered the golden armor, releasing a burst of hot plasma that scorched the grass. Elias pointed his index finger like a pistol toward the remaining three riders. A thin, hyper-concentrated beam of white-hot light shot from his fingertip, piercing through the shield of the second sentinel and detonating its core in a brilliant flash. Granite and dirt flew into the air as the remaining two sentinels synthesized a massive golden hammer between them, swinging it downward with enough force to level a hill. Jasper stepped into the path of the blow, crossing his massive arms. He unleashed his signature spell, a heavy gravity pulse that flattened the surrounding trees and froze the golden hammer mid-air. Elias darted underneath the frozen construct, his movement so fast he looked like a blur of golden dust. He swiped his hand upward, sending a crescent blade of light slicing through the joints of both sentinels. Silence returned to the forest, save for the crackling of scorched wood and the gentle hiss of dissolving armor. Jasper spat onto the smoking crater where the lead sentinel had fallen. "This is getting ridiculous. We can't even sit down for five minutes without some divine hall monitor trying to draft us into a holy war." "Exactly," Elias agreed, brushing ash off his sleeves. "They are tracking our S-tier outputs. Every time we use even a fraction of our power, we light up their tracking network like a Christmas tree." He picked up the melted core of one of the sentinels, his eyes gleaming with sudden inspiration. Without a word, Elias sat back down by the fire and pulled out two simple iron bands from his travel pack. Using his light magic as a high-precision welding torch, Elias began carving incredibly dense, microscopic runes onto the inside of the iron rings. He infused the metal with the dampening properties of the destroyed sentinel cores. Elias worked with the quiet, obsessive focus of a programmer debugging a critical system error. "These are slacker rings. They will act as a permanent resistor for our magic, forcing our S-tier outputs down to a mundane, unremarkable E-tier level." Jasper stared at the tiny metal band Elias handed him. "You're telling me this little washer is going to make me weak?" "It will make you look like a peasant to their tracking systems," Elias corrected. "It creates a closed loop, feeding our excess magic back into our cores so nothing leaks out into the environment. We'll be ghosts." Jasper grudgingly slid the ring onto his thick ring finger. A strange, heavy coldness immediately flooded his veins, causing his jaw to clench. He gasped, his knees buckling slightly as his massive ocean of dark magic was squeezed down to a tiny, dripping faucet. "Damn," Jasper muttered, staring at his hands. "I feel incredibly weak. I feel like a normal guy who works a desk job again. It's terrifying, but also... amazing." Elias slipped his own ring on, his posture instantly relaxing as his bright golden aura vanished entirely, leaving him looking like a simple, dirty-blonde traveler. "Ironreach is our best bet now," Elias said, pointing toward the jagged, snow-capped mountains in the distance. "It is a neutral dwarven metropolis built miles underground. The rock and the dwarven anti-magic wards will hide us completely." Jasper smiled, the thought of cold dwarven stout and warm tavern beds warming his spirits. "A place where we can actually sleep past sunrise without getting attacked by glowing metal dudes? Sign me up." Their journey toward the mountains took them through steep, winding pathways where the wind howled like a dying beast. Hours blended into one another as they climbed higher, leaving the lush forests behind for the harsh, barren stone of the peaks. Cold air bit at their faces, but the feeling of being completely off the grid made the physical exertion entirely worth it. Jasper laughed, tossing a small pebble over the edge of a massive cliff. "No bosses. No holy decrees. Just two guys, heading to a giant underground pub." Elias nodded, his rational mind finally feeling at peace. "We will buy a small estate, live off our savings, and let the rest of the world fight over who gets to rule the heavens." Just ahead of them lay the narrow stone bridge that marked the official entrance to the mountain pass leading directly into Ironreach territory. As they step onto the mountain pass, the suppression rings suddenly turn boiling hot, melting into their skin as a loud voice echoes in their minds: 'Suppression is a breach of contract.'
