Chapter 9 of 10

The Herald's Demise

941 words

The immense golden eye, ancient, cold, and terrible, peered downward upon the broken earth. Its gaze bore downward like iron slabs, flattening the air inside their chests. The volcanic cavern answered not with a roar, but with a guttural shriek tearing through stone and marrow. Cracks split the basalt floor, spewing jets of white steam that blistered the air. Jagged basalt spires warped and rose, turning into grotesque fangs that gnashed toward the sky. Liquid slag surged from the central lake, crashing against the sheer cliffs. The bedrock bucked, pitching Vashan and Suyara down against the stone. They scrambled to regain balance, their eyes locked on the impossible spectacle above. “Jurok!” Suyara’s voice, usually a blade of ice, cracked with raw fury. She lunged forward, her legendary frost blade, ‘Glacier’s Tear,’ already manifesting, a hilt of frosted silver forming in her hand, the blade itself a spear of condensed absolute zero. She was a blur of righteous vengeance, aiming to sever the cultist's connection to the monstrous gate. But Jurok was no longer the man they knew. As the divine eye solidified its presence, dark tendrils of shadow burst through his skin, weaving through his limbs, distorting his frame. His bones groaned, elongating, twisting. His eyes, once shrewd and calculating, became twin voids of consuming darkness. His body bloated, his skin hardening into a chitinous armor that gleamed with an unholy sheen. Two massive, leathery wings tore through his back, shredding his robes. His mouth spread into a fanged maw, a dark chuckle rasping from his throat as his bulk swelled into a horned demon-herald. “Foolish girl!” Jurok’s voice boomed across the vault, thick with gravel and malice. He met Suyara’s charge head-on, a colossal claw, black as tar and tipped with razor-sharp talons, lashing out with terrifying speed. Suyara, for all her peerless skill, was caught off guard by his transformed speed and mass. Her frost blade met the black talon, a shriek of tortured ice against demonic stone. But the blow was too heavy. Glacier’s Tear shattered into a million frozen shards that evaporated into mist. The force of Jurok’s strike sent Suyara careening backward, slamming her against a jagged rock pillar. Bone cracked sharp, and she dropped against the floor, blood trickling from her lips as her chin slumped to her chest. “Suyara!” Vashan roared, a sound torn from his very core. The sight of her crumpled against the basalt broke the fragile dam holding his inner power. An inferno flared behind his ribs. His vision swam with a violent, orange haze. Every insult, every humiliation, every sneering face of the arrogant elites, every mocking word about his mother's death – all coalesced into a single point of incandescent rage. But it was the image of Suyara, sprawled and vulnerable, that ignited the true cataclysm within. *He hurt her. He hurt HER.* Skarn’s voice, a distant, frantic echo, screamed in his mind. “Vashan! Lad! NO! The full absorption will tear you apart! It’s too soon!” But Vashan didn't hear him. Didn't care. He thrust his right hand toward the blood drop that held Skarn, which burned with unstable crimson light. With a primal roar, he willed it. The droplet exploded, not outwards, but inwards, collapsing into Vashan’s core, a miniature supernova of raw, untamed draconic essence. Searing agony tore through his right arm. Muscles parted, bones splintered and lengthened, skin split open. White light flared from the marrow, followed by a surge of liquid fire leaking straight through his pores. His arm swelled, growing to grotesque proportions, twisting, hardening, reforming. Scales of soot-black and gold plating broke through his skin, steaming and crackling. His hand became a massive, clawed appendage, each talon a foot long, razor-sharp and dripping with incandescent magma. The air around him shimmered with oppressive heat, the ground beneath his feet beginning to melt. With a heavy stomp, the rock under his boots shattered, hurling him forward. The claw blazed, scorching the air behind his dash. Jurok, still admiring his blow against Suyara, barely tracked the rushing silhouette before a burning draconic fist rammed straight into his chest. The chitinous armor, which had withstood Suyara's frost blade, offered no resistance. It pulverized, exploded inwards, as Vashan’s draconic claw plunged deep into Jurok’s demonic form. Jurok's empty black sockets flared wide, a gurgle choking in his throat. Vashan's talons clamped around a pulsating mass deep in Jurok’s ribs—an inky orb thrumming with the foul resonance of the gate. The cult’s core. With a low growl, Vashan yanked it free. Jurok’s body convulsed, his monstrous form shriveling and cracking like dried earth. The demonic transformation reversed, his skin flaking away, revealing the pale, gaunt figure of the cultist beneath. Blood, black and viscous, poured from the gaping wound in his chest where his heart should have been. He stumbled, falling to his knees, his eyes still fixed on Vashan, on the pulsating dark core clutched in the molten claw. A bloody smirk carved across his face as his strength bled out. “It’s done, Kor…” Jurok rasped, his voice barely a whisper, a final, triumphant declaration. His gaze flickered past Vashan, up to the rending void above. With a last, defiant twitch, his finger lifted, pointing to the now fully stable, horrifyingly vast rift. The golden eye, no longer content to merely observe, pulsed with a terrible, growing light. The very concept of sky, of space, of reality itself, gave way. A colossal, scaled hand, larger than the entire Sun-Piercer Enclave, slowly, inexorably, began to reach through the tear. Its shadow reached across the volcanic cavern, across Okhara, suffocating the world. It was coming to crush the world.
