Chapter 10 of 10

Forging the New Seal

1.1k words

The gargantuan hand, scaled and veined with pure celestial gold, descended with terrifying slowness. Its shadow swallowed the magma chamber, then stretched beyond, a cosmic shroud engulfing Okhara. Vashan Kor, his right arm a molten talon of black bone, felt the celestial weight crush against his very soul. Jurok’s lifeless body, still sporting that bloodied, mocking grin, was a grim reminder of how far they had fallen, how close to annihilation the realm now stood. “Skarn!” Vashan roared, his voice a guttural rasp, distorted by the power surging through him. “Tell me how to stop this!” The sealed monk’s cackle, usually laced with scorn, now held a frantic edge. “You fool! You absorbed the core! You *are* the bomb! The very essence of the ancient beast courses through your veins! You can’t stop it, you can only redirect it! Unleash it, Vashan! Every last scrap of power! Burn!” Vashan felt the core within him ignite, not with the controlled fury he was accustomed to, but with a wild, destructive intent. His body became a conduit for pure, unadulterated geothermal force, a living furnace threatening to tear itself apart. The rock beneath his feet began to crack, glowing with an incandescent orange light. Tendrils of heat, hotter than any forge, erupted from his skin, scorching the air around him. The colossal hand continued its descent, oblivious to the ant attempting to resist its crushing will. Then, a frigid clarity cut through the searing heat. Suyara. She stirred, a faint moan escaping her lips. Her eyes fluttered open, locking onto Vashan’s. Even through the haze of pain and the overwhelming presence of the god, her gaze was sharp, fiercely devoted. Her hand, trembling, reached out, finding purchase on his burning left arm, the one still human. “Not alone, Vashan,” she breathed, her voice a fragile chime against the encroaching doom. A pale, crystalline sheen bloomed across her skin, pushing back the encroaching heat. Her life-force, battered and near spent, rekindled, drawing strength from their shared bond, from the very core of his power that now pulsed between them. “Skarn!” Suyara called out, her voice gaining strength, resonating with a pure, piercing cold that made the very air crackle. “The seal! How do we forge it?!” “Her! Her ice, you idiots!” Skarn shrieked, his voice straining. “Your destructive fire needs its opposite! The beast's core is raw chaos; her pure frost is the only forge! Channel it, Suyara! Direct his power! Give it form! Give it purpose beyond annihilation! You two are the true seal!” The colossal hand descended further, its shadows deepening, threatening to snuff out their very existence. Vashan felt an unbearable pressure build within him, his body screaming for release. He could blast the hand apart, but the resulting explosion would shatter Okhara. He needed control, a conduit, a purpose. Suyara’s eyes, normally pools of glacial blue, now blazed with a fierce, unwavering resolve. She pressed closer, her palm flat against Vashan’s chest, directly over his blazing core. Her ice-cold essence, pure and unyielding, began to flow into him, meeting his chaotic fire head-on. There was no clash, no violent rejection, but a breathtaking, harmonious fusion. Her ice did not extinguish his fire; it refined it, sharpened it, gave it structure. His uncontrolled outward burst became an inward coiling, a tightening, a focused point of absolute power. As their spiritual reserves interwove, a blinding aurora of sapphire and amber light erupted from their clasped hands, spiraling upward. It was a pillar of creation and destruction, ice and fire, swirling in perfect, terrifying balance. The god's limb, now mere yards from striking the caldera floor, paused. For the first time, Vashan sensed a ripple of something akin to surprise from the entity beyond the rift. “Now!” Suyara yelled, her voice ringing with newfound power, her entire being radiating an ultimate frost art. “Release it, Vashan! Together!” Vashan roared, a sound that tore through the magma chamber, a primal cry of defiance. The intertwined currents, no longer an erratic blast, but a precisely aimed lance of retribution, surged from their bodies. It was not an explosion, but a concentrated beam of pure, refined force, born of fire and tempered by ice. It shot upward, a spear of cosmic light, striking the colossal hand directly at its wrist. The god-like hand stiffened, then began to glow with an agonizing golden intensity. A sound, like mountains crumbling and stars shattering, reverberated through the void. The scaled skin at the wrist began to crack, fissures spreading across the celestial flesh. The otherworldly radiance screamed, an unheard shriek of pain and rejection. With a final, earth-shattering crack, the connection severed. The god’s hand, still impossibly vast, detached from the rift, tumbling with glacial slowness into the molten depths below, sending up a geyser of lava that dwarfed any of Okhara’s peaks. The blinding golden eye above the rift recoiled, its light flickering, then dimming. The tear in reality, no longer held open by the god’s presence, began to collapse in on itself, shrinking with terrifying speed. Within moments, the rending void above the magma chamber snapped shut. The volcanic dome, once a gaping wound, stood whole again. The oppressive shadow lifted. Vashan and Suyara, drained but alive, stood amidst the cooling obsidian, their forms radiating a faint, harmonious glow. He pulled her closer, her head resting against his chest, her breath a soft exhalation against his skin. The molten claw on his right arm had receded, leaving only faint, draconic scales beneath his skin. His temper, usually a roaring inferno, was now a steady, warming hearth. He looked down at the woman in his arms, a genuine, soft smile gracing his lips. They emerged from the caldera hours later, supported by Suyara’s remaining ice-infused spiritual reserves, into a world transformed. The Sun-Piercer Enclave, though scarred, still stood. The cult’s siege engines lay in twisted ruins, their forces annihilated by the aftershocks of the god’s retreat. Surviving Elders, along with a traumatized Tyren Jhal, stood amongst the wreckage, their faces pale with awe and terror. They watched Vashan and Suyara descend, their arrogant posturing utterly evaporated. Vashan’s smirk was slow, utterly satisfying. He held Suyara tighter, a silent declaration to all who witnessed it. No more mockery, no more humiliation. They were heroes. Undisputed. The elites, the bloodline purists, now knew true power. He met Tyren’s gaze, a flash of shared history, of past defeats, burning between them. Tyren quickly averted his eyes, shrinking into himself. “Aha! Not bad, boy! Not bad at all!” Skarn’s cackle echoed in Vashan’s mind, full of unbridled glee. “But don’t get too comfortable, you ashen brat. That was just a finger. The rest of the Ashen Dragon’s body is still out there, scattered across the cosmos. And it’s waiting for its core to reunite with it. Get ready, Vashan Kor. The real journey has only just begun!”
