Nausea hit Bavol hard, distinct from the caustic pulse of the Null-Blade in his flank. Her accusation peeled back the comfortable haze of his firmware mods, leaving him staring at the wreckage of her career. He had traded her life's work for an imaginary vengeance, while she had quietly rescued his sister from the ward-mines. The blade flared inside his ribs, gnawing through muscle.
He opened his mouth, but before he could string together an apology, a high-pitched *whiiiiir* sliced through the lab’s quiet. A jagged tear ripped through the ceiling’s ventilation duct, metal shrieking against metal. A cloud of plaster dust and insulation rained down, followed by a clatter and a thud. Tirvan, his best friend, dangled precariously from the newly formed hole, legs flailing, before he dropped to the floor with an ungraceful tumble.
“Bavol! Jelika! My new prototype is almost ready for its field test!” Tirvan scrambled to his feet, dusting off his rumpled artificer’s robes. He held aloft a gleaming, chrome sphere, no larger than a child’s fist, that pulsed with soft azure light. It floated serenely beside his head.
Jelika stood rigid, her gaze dragging from Bavol’s glowing cortex readout toward the ceiling rubble. “Tirvan? What in the Hex-Isles are you doing?” Her voice was thin, a raw edge to it.
“Ah, Jelika! Perfect timing!” Tirvan beamed, completely oblivious to the room’s tension. “My new ‘Aethel-Mates’ bot! It’s designed to assess compatibility and predict long-term partnership viability! I thought, what better test subjects than a newly engaged couple locked in a romantic quarantine?” He gestured grandly between Bavol and Jelika with his free hand.
Bavol groaned into the cushions, the irony scraping raw nerves. He tried to sit up, but the Null-Blade’s insidious tendrils, now fully aware of his rising despair, clawed at his insides, making him gasp.
“Let’s see, let’s see!” Tirvan’s bot whirred, its azure light intensifying as it zipped between them, holographic readouts flickering around its spherical body. “Scanning emotional resonance… analyzing shared life-paths… calculating probability metrics…”

The bot’s cheerful voice chirped, “Two percent! Not bad for a first run, right? I can probably boost that with some algorithm tweaks! Maybe a shared trauma module?”
Jelika’s lip curled. “Two percent,” she repeated, a bitter, humorless laugh escaping her. “It’s two percent because he ruined my life, Tirvan. And now he’s dying for it.”
Before Tirvan could reply, the lab’s bioluminescent ceiling tubes flared, dipping into harsh scarlet. The matchmaking orb sputtered, its holographic readouts smearing into grey snow while the air grew dense with ozone.
A colossal, shimmering figure materialized in the center of the lab, a pure crimson projection that stretched from floor to ceiling, radiating malice. It was the Assassin’s Guild Master, Xylos, his face a mask of predatory amusement, his eyes like chips of obsidian.
“Jelika Vantol,” Xylos’s voice thrummed through the very floorplates, echoing with dark power. “You made a grave error, little artificer. You publicly lost your Guild Wards. Your assets are now fair game. Your life, forfeit. My Guild has claimed the debt for the failed assassination on your person. A rather hefty fee, I assure you.”
The poison flared in Bavol's gut, but the bounty terms hit harder. Jelika. Wardless. Debt. Forfeit. Without Guild Wards, she was utterly defenseless, a lamb led to slaughter. His smear campaigns had systematically revoked every legal shield she possessed.
“Surrender now, and perhaps your end will be swift,” Xylos continued, a cruel smile stretching across his projected face. “Resist, and we will dissect your genius, piece by piece, for any patents you may have hidden away.”
Jelika’s face, still pale from the realization about Bavol’s ad-blocker, tightened with raw defiance. “You won’t get a single schematic from me, Xylos,” she spat, her voice surprisingly steady, despite the tremor in her hands. She reached instinctively for the Null-Blade scanner, then remembered she’d dropped it.
Bavol’s mind raced, a frantic scramble against time. Antidote? What antidote? That was secondary now. He didn’t care about his own survival. He had to protect her. He had to fix this. *His* life force. *His* Wards. It was all he had left.
He pushed himself up again, ignoring the blinding pain, the black spots dancing at the edges of his vision. Jelika’s eyes, wide with fear and a strange, desperate resolve, met his. He saw the understanding dawning in them, the question of what he was about to do.
“Bavol, no,” she whispered, but it was too late.
He reached out, his hand shaking violently, and grasped her wrist. His vision swam. He channeled every scrap of raw mana he had left into his fingertips. A faint, golden glow emanated from his hand, pulsing erratically, like a dying star. It flowed into her, a searing, hot current against her skin.
[WARNING! Unauthorized Aetheric Transfer Detected! Attempting to reroute personal Guild Wards! High risk of Soul Imbalance and Irreversible Account Deletion!]
“What are you doing?!” Tirvan shrieked, batting at his spinning bot. “Bavol, you can’t hand off Wards like that! It’ll shred your soul apart!”
Bavol gritted his teeth, a guttural growl escaping him. The golden light intensified, becoming almost blinding, as his own life force, his connection to the Grid, his very essence, ripped itself from him and surged into Jelika. He felt an agonizing tear, a sensation far worse than the Null-Blade, as something fundamental within him fractured.
[DING! Guild Ward Transfer Initiated! Recipient: Jelika Vantol. Status: Guild Wards Restored! Your account balance is now sufficient to cover all outstanding debts. Enjoy your renewed security!]
As the System’s cheerful chime rang out, Bavol’s glowing hand went limp. The golden light vanished, leaving him feeling utterly hollowed out, cold to his bones. A racking cough tore through him, splattering thick, black mana-clots across the floorplates. His knees buckled, and he collapsed, the agony of the Null-Blade now a dull throb compared to the gaping void in his soul. He barely registered Jelika’s choked cry, or the frantic shouts of Tirvan.
He was dying. He knew it. But her Wards were back. She was safe. That was enough. More than enough.
[DING! Critical Health Threshold Reached! Account Deletion Imminent!]
Xylos’s holographic form flickered at the unexpected shift, then smoothed back into a grin. “Impressive, Bavol. A final, foolish act of chivalry. But it changes nothing. The quarantine, it seems, is proving more… porous than anticipated. Consider this a declaration of war, Jelika. A full breach of your quarantine wing is now underway.”
