Chapter 8 of 10
A Reckoning at the Gates

The air thrummed with static. Zardinu stood atop a rampart of jagged bone, newly raised by his marrow infantry at the perimeter of the Iron Maw. The walls of Alaca shimmered faintly on the distant horizon, a grey shelf of stone cutting against the wild. Beside him, Kurunta’s newly forged armor, dark as obsidian, caught the pale light of the twin moons, while Grotkrag, still adapting to his skeletal form, stood in rigid silence, a primal fury barely contained beneath his reanimated ribcage.
“They come,” Hattusili’s voice, a dry whisper in Zardinu’s mind, confirmed what his augmented vision already showed. A column of armor and treads snaked across the barren plains: the Conscription Corps. Zardinu felt a familiar surge of pride, quickly tempered by a cold, strategic calculation. This was the fortress city's full deployment.

[WARNING: TARGET – ZARDINU (CRUCIBLE ABERRATION)]
“An anomaly, am I?” Zardinu scoffed, a harsh rasp scraping like bone on rock. “They fear what they cannot control.” He glanced at Kurunta. “Prepare the Vanguard. Telip will guard the breach. Let them come.”
Kurunta’s crimson eye-glow intensified. “As you command, God-King. Their flesh will feed our harvest.” He turned, his heavy stride shaking the bone-crete beneath his feet as he descended to organize the legions.
Hours later, the expeditionary force halted outside the ridge, a disciplined spearhead of steel and kinetic shields. Their armor gleamed, their weapons hummed with harnessed energies. At their head, Shilan, her face a mask of grim resolve, rode a hulking ground-crawler, its treads churning dust into a choking cloud. The air crackled with tension, a battle poised to ignite.
But Shilan raised a hand, calling a halt to the formidable war machine. Her elite guard, clad in the reinforced plating of the Alaca Sentinels, arrayed themselves behind her, their weapons silent but ready. Zardinu watched, a flicker of surprise unsettling his usual composure. This was not the charge he anticipated.
Shilan dismounted, her gaze unwavering as she scanned the skeletal ramparts, finally locking onto Zardinu. She walked forward, alone, stopping a mere twenty paces from the gate of carved monster-bone. The distance between them sat barren and bare.
“Zardinu!” Her voice cut through the silence, clear and sharp. “I’m not here to fight. Not yet.”
“Then why stand before my gates with an army at your back, Enforcer?” Zardinu’s reply was a challenge, his voice carrying an unnatural resonance, amplified by the necrotic energies swirling around him.
“Because the Bastion lies!” She took another step, her hand resting on the hilt of her sidearm, a gesture of caution, not threat. “You were no coward. You were a scapegoat. The ‘catalytic failure’ of the Osseous Protocol… it wasn’t you. It was *them*. A systemic cascade, triggered by a hidden back-door they exploited for… for reasons I haven’t fully unraveled. They covered it up, painted you as the villain, branded you a traitor to save their own skins. My family’s archives, the redacted files… they tell the true story.”
Zardinu felt a tremor, not of fear, but of an old, buried fury stirring within him. His past, a fragmented echo, suddenly resonated with Shilan’s words. *A scapegoat.* The idea grated against his pride, yet a bitter vindication bloomed. It explained the raw injustice, the burning shame he’d carried.
“They sought to silence you, to make an example,” Shilan continued, her voice gaining urgency. “But you returned. As an Osseous Sovereign. They brand you a defect because they can’t control you, because your power exposes their lie. I understand now. You’re not the threat they claim.” She gestured back at her army, a reluctant admission in her eyes. “I was ordered to exterminate you. But I won’t. We can… we can find a way. Work together. This broken world... it’s bigger than their petty politics.”
Zardinu stared at her, a complicated maelstrom of thoughts churning. An alliance? With an Enforcer? His arrogance screamed defiance, yet the pragmatic part of him, the survivor, recognized the strategic boon. Her knowledge, her position… it could be invaluable. He saw her earnestness, the way her loyalty was torn.
“An interesting proposition, Enforcer,” Zardinu finally said, his voice softer, less combative. “Tell me more of these… lies. And what you propose.”
The faintest hint of relief touched Shilan’s face. “The leadership, the Alaca Council… they are corrupt. This fugitive branding, this attack… it’s a desperate attempt to cover their tracks. We could… with your power, with my knowledge of the Bastion, we could dismantle their deception, expose them.”
Before Zardinu could respond, a guttural roar ripped through the air, not from his legions, but from behind Shilan’s lines. Her second-in-command, a hulking Sentinel with a zealot’s fanatical glare, stepped forward; Zardinu read the nameplate on his breastplate: Varkos. His armor, normally pristine, now pulsed with an unsettling, sickly green light. In his hand, he clutched a shard of obsidian that pulsed in rhythm with his beating heart.
“Traitor!” the officer bellowed, his voice distorted and harsh. “The outcast corrupts! For the Alaca Council! For the true order of the system!” He slammed the obsidian shard into the ground. A deafening crack reverberated across the plains.

Every conscript and armored Sentinel let out a unified, guttural roar. Their eyes glazed over, their movements became jerky, feral. The green light pulsed brighter, coursing through their armor, making their muscles bulge to grotesque proportions. Their weapons flared, charged with raw, uncontrolled power. They were no longer soldiers, but rabid beasts, their minds consumed by a terrifying, alien rage.
Shilan spun around, her face etched with horror. “What have you done?” Shilan shouted. “You idiot! That shard burns out the nervous system!”
The officer merely laughed, a rasping, broken sound. His own eyes were now glowing with the same virulent green. “They will be glorious, Captain! They will cleanse this blight! They will rip him apart!” He pointed a shaking, green-tinged finger at Zardinu. “Charge! For the Council! For the Dominion!”
The altered ranks surged forward in a single, frenzied wave. Their charge was deafening, the ground trembling under their altered might. Shilan stood frozen for a moment, caught between her betrayed trust and the monstrosity unleashed by her own second-in-command.
Zardinu watched the terrifying transformation, his eyes narrowing. He felt the cold dread of the unexpected, followed quickly by a surge of pure, exhilarating rage. They wanted a fight? He would give them an apocalypse. He turned to face the oncoming horde, his hands clenching, already feeling the hungry pull of his power.
“Kurunta!” Zardinu’s voice thundered, cutting through the din. “Release Telip! Let them break themselves against the Maw!” His gaze swept across the charging, glowing figures, already picturing their bones rising to swell his ranks. This wasn't just a battle for his name; it was a reckoning for his entire nascent empire. He would show them what an outcast could unleash, and what happened when mortal men tried to cut down a god-king in the making. He knew, with absolute certainty, that no matter how many fell, his army would only grow stronger. The attackers had delivered him raw materials beyond measure.
Shilan, snapped from her stunned horror, drew her weapon. “Zardinu, no! They’re not themselves!” But her plea was lost in the roar of battle, as the first berserkers slammed into the bone gates, their supercharged blows cracking the reinforced marrow. She saw Zardinu’s chilling smile, a predator’s grin, and knew, with a sickening lurch, that there was no stopping this. Only blood. And as a colossal, skeletal dragon’s head emerged from behind the ramparts, its empty eye-sockets blazing, Shilan knew she was truly alone, caught between a mad zealot and a rising god. The fate of Alaca, perhaps even the planet, would be decided here, at the gates of the Iron Maw. Her decision, her defiance… it had brought her here. And now, she had to choose. Fight the monster she knew, or the monsters she didn't.
