Chapter 7 of 10

The Siege of the Iron Maw

1.5k words

The wind, tasting of sulfur and stale iron, whipped Zardinu’s tattered cloak as he stood perched on the jagged peak of Mount Khazak. Below, nestled in a ravine like a jagged tooth in a rotten gum, lay the Iron Maw. Its fortifications were crude but formidable: stacked plates of salvaged metal, jagged stone, and impaled skulls forming a concentric ring of defenses. Goblin sentries, tiny figures even at this distance, scuttled along the ramparts, their crude crossbows glinting dully. “A fine challenge, God-King!” Kurunta’s voice, a gravelly boom, vibrated beside him. The Ashen Vanguard, a towering figure of charred bone and smoldering ember, gripped his nicked, dented axe. “Their defenses are… rustic. But their spirit, I detect, is not entirely broken.” Hattusili’s spectral voice echoed in Zardinu’s mind, a low hum of ancient data. *“The Iron Maw. A nexus of tribal power within this Zone. Its Warlord, a Hobgoblin named Grotkrag, is cunning in his brutishness. His elite guard, the ‘Blood-Tusk Braves,’ are a significant obstacle.”* Zardinu didn’t need the prompt. He’d studied the crude maps Hattusili had rendered from the Zone’s scattered data fragments. Grotkrag was a beast, but predictable. His strength lay in overwhelming direct assaults, not subtle tactics. “Kurunta,” Zardinu’s voice was calm, a stark contrast to the swirling chaos of the impending battle. “Telip will soften the outer shell. The Broodmother will smash the gates. Your legions will pour through the gaps.” He gestured with a gauntleted hand, his finger tracing a path along the stronghold's uneven perimeter. “The main gate will be a feint. I want their Blood-Tusks committed there. Send only the frailest marrow thralls for the initial push. Let them believe it’s a simple attrition battle.” Kurunta’s glowing eye sockets narrowed. “A diversion. Exquisite! Lure the beast from its lair.” “Indeed,” Zardinu confirmed. “Once the Blood-Tusks are engaged, a secondary opening, through the western wall. Telip will create it. That’s your entry point for the throne room.” [OBJECTIVE: Capture the Iron Maw Nexus] [PROGRESS: 0%] A guttural roar ripped through the air, and Telip, the skeletal dragon, launched from a hidden alcove in the mountain. Its colossal frame, a mosaic of fossilized bone and swirling spectral mist, blotted out a section of the sky. Goblin cries of alarm, shrill and panicked, rose from the redoubt below. Telip descended, its clawed forelimbs tearing into a watchtower, sending stone and screaming sentries plummeting. Below, the ground began to tremble. From the shadow of the Khazak cliffs, a tide of bone emerged. Thousands of osteal footsoldiers, armed with crude spears and rusted blades, marched with silent, relentless precision. Leading them, a hulking nightmare of chitin and segmented plates, was the hive-queen construct. Multifaceted eyes fixed on the Iron Maw’s main portal, segmented limbs digging into the earth with each step. [ASSESSMENT: Telip’s Aerial Assault initiated.] [ASSESSMENT: Broodmother Breaching Unit deployed.] The goblins responded with a desperate volley of crossbow bolts and hurled rocks. Most glanced harmlessly off the bone warriors, or simply shattered against the Broodmother’s carapace. The dragon's next pass tore a gaping hole in the outer curtain wall, exposing a secondary line of defenses. The matriarch construct, with a calcified screech that set Zardinu’s teeth vibrating, slammed into the main gate. Timber groaned, metal shrieked, and then with a final, splintering crash, the gate exploded inward. “Forward, my deathless kin!” Kurunta bellowed, a figure of pure, destructive elation. He surged at the head of a thousand bone-clad infantry, a living hurricane of ash and steel. “Taste the might of the God-King!” True to Zardinu’s prediction, the tribal commander strode into view. A hulking brute with tusks carved from obsidian and skin like petrified bark, he wore armor fashioned from scavenged beast plates. He roared a challenge, his voice a gravelly avalanche, and his elite ‘Blood-Tusk Braves’ – thirty muscular greenskins with wicked axes and boar-hide shields – formed a tight wedge, charging into the osseous line at the broken gate. They were formidable. Each swing of their axes cleaved through bone, sending fragments skittering. They moved with a brutal coordination, their battle cries echoing across the courtyard. Zardinu watched, impassive, as his weaker units were cut down, only to rise again, their numbers barely diminished. This was the cost of bait. A small price for victory. [UNIT LOSS: Minor. Replenishment imminent.] “Now!” Zardinu’s voice cut through the clamor, reaching Kurunta’s awareness. “Western wall! Telip!” Telip, having circled, descended once more. This time, it didn’t just strike a watchtower; it tore a ragged chasm through the stronghold's western wall, a direct path towards the central keep. Dust and debris rained down, momentarily obscuring the view. Kurunta, with a savage grin that stretched his ashen face, pivoted. “A true artist, my God-King! Legions, follow me! The heart of the Maw awaits!” He peeled away, taking a core of his most resilient thralls, and surged through the ruptured masonry. The Blood-Tusks, still locked in a grinding melee at the main entrance, roared in frustration, unable to disengage. Zardinu watched as Kurunta carved a bloody path through the startled goblin defenders in the inner courtyard. The frontline champion was a whirlwind of motion, his primordial axe blurring, felling goblins with every swing. He moved with a speed that belied his size, a dark comet streaking towards the keep. Inside the throne room, the Iron Maw's master, having finally disentangled from the main skirmish, turned with a snarl as Kurunta burst through the doors. The throne room was sparse, adorned with crude banners depicting a snarling tusked beast and piles of scavenged loot. “Another bone-thing?!” the raider yelled, slamming his colossal axe onto the stone floor. “You wish to die in my hall, spirit-spawn?” “I have come to claim this hall, and your insignificant spirit, for my God-King,” Kurunta retorted, his voice dripping with disdain. He lunged, his axe arcing in a deadly sweep. The chieftain, surprisingly agile, sidestepped, bringing his own axe around in a powerful counter-swing. Steel met ash-bone with a ringing clash. The duel was a brutal dance of heavy blows. The chieftain relied on raw power, each swing capable of pulverizing stone. Kurunta, however, was quicker, his moves honed by forgotten eons of combat. He parried, dodged, and sought openings, his body shifting with fluid grace. The brute roared in frustration, a wild beast cornered, trying to overpower Kurunta by locking axes and leaning his whole mass forward. But Kurunta, powered by Zardinu’s influence, held firm. With a sudden twist, Kurunta disengaged, bringing the haft of his axe around in a vicious snap that caught Grotkrag across the jaw. The chieftain staggered, blood spraying from his lips. Before Grotkrag could recover, Kurunta spun, his axe a shimmering arc of destruction. It cleaved through the thick shoulder plate, biting deep into flesh and bone. The chieftain howled, a guttural sound of pain and fury, dropping to one knee. He looked up, defiance burning in his eyes, even as life bled from him. “Submit,” Kurunta stated, his axe poised for the finishing blow. “Or become an eternal servant.” The broken beast spat a mouthful of blood. “Never! I am Grotkrag! Tyrant of the Iron Maw!” With a swift, final movement, Kurunta’s axe descended, silencing the defiance forever. The clan lord collapsed, a heap of muscle and scrap plates. [HOBGOBLIN WARLORD GROTKRAG DEFEATED.] Zardinu, still observing from Mount Khazak, felt a surge of cold power. It was time. He extended a hand, focusing his will, his very essence reaching across the distance, into the fallen brute’s form. A dark miasma began to seep from the carcass, coalescing, reforming, shifting. The body shuddered. [SOUL ESSENCE HARVESTED: GROTKRAG, HOBGOBLIN WARLORD.] [NEW UNIT ACQUIRED: ASCHEN GENERAL – GROTKRAG THE IRON MAW.] The dead chieftain's eyes, once burning with savagery, snapped open. But now, they glowed with a dull, crimson light, the same eerie hue as Kurunta’s. The revived champion rose, his form now a charred, calcified replica of his former self, a faint mist of ash trailing from his armor. He looked at Kurunta, then turned, his newly resurrected gaze fixing on the distant peak where Zardinu stood. He knelt. His voice, a rasping echo of its former thunder, carried through the newly conquered halls. “My Lord… I live to serve.” Zardinu felt a cold, hard satisfaction bloom in his chest. Another piece of the puzzle. Another pawn on the board. He looked out at the conquered Iron Maw, at the thousands of marrow infantry now methodically securing the perimeter, at his two Ashen commanders, one primeval and bombastic, the other newly raised and grimly loyal. The Zone trembled before his growing might. But the Osseous Mandate still loomed, a cosmic guillotine waiting to fall. And the Bastion of Alaca, with its secrets and its lies, was not so far away. He turned his gaze towards the horizon, a predatory glint in his eyes. What other buried gods awaited his touch, ready to swell his ranks?
