Chapter 8 of 10

Pantheon of Meat

1.2k words

The gargantuan, fused hand clenched. The Hospital Citadel groaned, metal screeching and concrete shearing away, as it rose steadily from bedrock. Maite screamed, stumbling back from the viewport, pulling Eneko’s shirt. “Eneko! It’s… it’s taking us!” Eneko didn’t even glance at her. His gaze was fixed on the gnarled digits, each one a patchwork of mismatched limbs and organs, that now encased their sanctuary. “Taking us?” he snarled, his voice a low growl that vibrated through the floor. “No. My storage is *spilling* us. These are *my* monsters, and they’re coming home.” The acid in his gut turned molten—not aimed at the Vanguard or the sky, but directly at his own skull. His impatience, his ceaseless butchery and hoarding, had spawned a rabid ecosystem inside his storage ring, and now the hive wanted blood. Patella’s glowing skull-face turned upwards, tracking the Omega Gate that swallowed the sky. Its voice, a low rumble of grinding bone, filled the ward. “**The Firstborn emerge. The Architects of Chaos. They seek the new realm. Your realm, Master.**” [WARNING: Inventory integrity compromised. Entity breach imminent.] [CHITINOUS PROMPT: ‘Rogue Wave’ – Your meticulously hoarded collection is staging a hostile takeover! Deliciously ironic. Time to get squishy.] With a thunderclap like splitting bedrock, the Omega Gate above San Telmo tore fully open. It wasn't just raining debris anymore; it was raining *life*. Or rather, *un-life*. Monstrous forms, grotesque and unimaginable, plummeted from the sky like malformed hailstones, striking buildings with concussive force, splattering across the streets of the city. A multi-limbed behemoth, born of a thousand fused hospital gurneys and the flailing torsos of a dozen alien goblins, slammed into the street below, sending up a geyser of pulverized asphalt and shattered glass. Oskur-Zar, his massive form trembling with excitement, let out a booming laugh. “The pantheon has arrived! Truly, this is a glorious age! A challenge worthy of the War God! A true test of mettle!” He slammed his oversized fist into his palm. “Master, grant me leave to introduce myself to these… *newcomers*!” Eneko didn't need to grant leave. Oskur-Zar was already a blur of movement, leaping from the gaping hole in the Citadel wall. He smashed down, cratering the pavement ten paces from the gurney-goblin horror as it unfurled its jagged legs. The beast had several heads, all screaming in different pitches, some made of stretched human faces, others of alien mandibles. Its primary body was a patchwork of stainless steel, IV poles, and chitinous plates. “Aha! A Dragon of Beds and Bits!” Oskur-Zar roared, his voice echoing over the chaotic city. He ducked under a swipe from a gurney-arm, the wheels still attached, before bringing his fist up in a devastating uppercut that vaporized one of the goblin heads. “Fascinating! The ingenuity of the Stitched Doom is magnificent! But can it withstand the wrath of a god unbound? We shall see!” He spun, bringing a bone-crushing kick to the beast’s side, sending it tumbling through a storefront. Oskur-Zar laughed again, a sound of pure, unadulterated delight. “Come, you patchwork abomination! Show me the true fury of your borrowed forms!” He was like a child in a candy store, a god revelling in the fresh chaos. To the war god, this was not survival; it was an open carnival of slaughter. Nerea, watching Oskur-Zar battle, exhaled slowly, a wisp of frost curling from her lips. The air around her grew heavy, biting cold. “The gates are still expanding,” she stated, her voice quiet but firm. “They’ll tear all of San Telmo apart if we don’t close them. My ultimate spell… it can sever the dimensional tethers. But it requires a stable anchor. The base of the Omega Gate itself.” Eneko turned, a flicker of concern crossing his rage-hardened face. “You mean… up there? That’s too dangerous. They’re pouring out. You’ll be overwhelmed.” She locked eyes with him, frost snapping off her lashes. “It’s the only way. If I freeze the core, the portal's stability shatters. It severs the link before more of your hoard breaks through.” She started walking towards the nearest hole in the wall, towards the chaos, towards the sky. “It won’t stop what’s already here, but it will stop the rest of your… *pets*… from joining the party.” “Nerea, wait!” Maite cried, but Nerea was already moving with purpose. Eneko watched her, teeth grinding hard enough to crack enamel. He didn’t like this. He didn’t like her going out there alone, into the maw of his own self-made apocalypse. But he knew she was right. This was his mess, and she was trying to help him clean it. Reaching the edge of the jagged opening, Nerea raised both hands. The air shimmered, growing impossibly cold. Frost bloomed on every surface, delicate, intricate patterns spreading across the concrete. A vortex of azure frost roared from her palms, spiralling skyward into a pillar of blinding cold aimed dead at the Omega Gate's base, where spliced meat grafted onto warped spacetime. The pillar struck, and with a drawn-out screech of tearing tendon, the fleshy ring crystallized, spiderwebbing with pale frost. The grotesque hand holding the Citadel shuddered, its grip weakening. But the newly arrived entities were not oblivious. From the opening, a torrent of amalgamated horrors descended. A winged horror fashioned from screaming jaws and serrated ribs plummeted straight toward Nerea. Another, a serpentine monstrosity of coiled sinew and rebar, wrapped around the frost pillar, venting white-hot steam to boil away her casting. The cold intensified, Nerea’s breath coming out in ragged gasps, her skin already dusted with rime. Her eyes, usually so sharp, began to glaze over as the sheer force of her spell, coupled with the onslaught, threatened to consume her. She drove both boots into the rubble, thickening the frost pillar until it swallowed the ring's anchor point, but the sky-beasts converged. Her vision blurred, the edges turning to a tunnel of white. One of the winged horrors, its mouths drooling corrosive bile, lunged, its bone-claws aimed directly at her throat. She was almost there. The gate was almost sealed. But she was running out of time. Out of strength. The cold, both external and internal, was overwhelming her. She could feel the chill seeping into her very bones, slowing her thoughts, her movements. Eneko roared, a sound of pure, unadulterated fury that cut through the din of the battle. He saw her framed against the fracturing threshold, surrounded and dropping to one knee. His monster problem was about to kill the one person who saw past his rage. He hated this. He hated being cornered. He hated losing control. He despised the thought of Maite's sanctuary—his sole reason for drawing breath—shattering beneath the weight of his own rabid hoard. [WARNING: Dimensional collapse imminent.
