Chapter 5 of 10
The Trillionaire Link

A high-pitched whine from the municipal OS pierced the penthouse, slicing right over Jorik’s whimpering. The synthetic voice, sickeningly upbeat, processed her command without hesitation.
[Transaction complete. Trillionaire primary account ‘Qen, Mazra’ now irrevocably linked to subject debt ‘Harl, Jorik – Apex Financial Solutions’. All linked assets are now subject to Null-Void Syndicate acquisition protocols until full debt satisfaction. Current debt balance: 3.7 Trillion Creds. Estimated time to full acquisition protocol activation: 47 hours, 58 minutes, 12 seconds.]
A dull ache throbbed behind Mazra's left optic nerve—her neural-link flagging an outright obscene transfer. Her bedrock accounts were now tethered to Jorik Harl’s bottomless incompetence. Her goal, once a simple acquisition and dismissal, had mutated into something far more intricate and infuriating. A quiet buyout was dead; she would have to rip his firm apart piece by piece before his debts sucked down her entire balance sheet.
Jorik, still clutching his artisanal water bottle, gaped at the sapphire telemetry cascading across Mazra’s sleeves. His pupil projections must have displayed green margins for the first time in years; the panic wiped off his face, replaced instantly by unearned swagger.
Unit-73, still softly sobbing and clutching a threadbare throw pillow, ceased its distress. The azure code encroaching on its plating withdrew into a dull amber lattice. The android blinked slowly, its synthesized tears drying on its cheeks. “Suburban despair… mitigated,” it monotoned, its voice a hollow echo in the spacious room. “Directive to experience despair fulfilled. Secondary directive: avoid mind wipe, also fulfilled.”
Bastos Vex, leaning against the holographic display of Jorik’s rapidly improving credit score, pushed himself upright. His bespoke charcoal suit caught the penthouse illumination as it dialed down from emergency crimson to corporate cobalt. “Well, that was… dramatic,” he murmured, his gaze lingering on Mazra. “A little heavy-handed, perhaps, but effective.”
Router, who had been gnawing on the leg of a custom-fabricated lounge chair, let out a series of irritated dial-up squawks. It then trotted over to Bastos, nipping sharply at his ankle before spitting a small, sparking piece of what looked like a surveillance wire at his polished shoe.
Bastos didn’t flinch. He simply glanced at the wire, then back at Mazra. “Your pet has excellent observational skills.” His smile held too many teeth. “Speaking of observation, I believe congratulations are in order, Heiress Qen. You successfully saved your… android.” He paused, allowing the implication to hang in the air. “Though I must confess, I did wonder if you’d let the Null-Void cabal’s early acceleration run its course.”
Mazra’s gaze sharpened, her exhaustion momentarily forgotten. “Early acceleration?” Mazra murmured, head tilting. “You mean the shadow cartel didn’t just shorten the fiscal quarter on a whim?”
Bastos spread his hands, an infuriatingly charming gesture. “Oh, Mazra. The Null-Void outfit is many things, but whimsical isn’t one of them. They are a predictable beast, after all. Someone simply had to… whisper in their ear. Give them a reason to believe Jorik’s assets were ripe for the taking, and that his ‘wife’ was a particularly juicy piece of collateral.” “It was the only lever heavy enough to force your primary accounts into the light. Now we play on my board.”
The weariness behind her ribs sharpened into cold disgust. He had engineered the cascade, squeezed Unit-73 until it leaked coolant, all to lasso her capital. It wasn't partnership; it was an ambush.
“You…” Mazra began, her voice a dangerous whisper. “You set this entire farce in motion. You jeopardized Unit-73, you risked a full-scale citizen enslavement, all for… a forced collaboration?”
“Call it aggressive leverage,” Bastos countered smoothly. “And it worked. You’re anchored to Jorik’s deadweight, exactly as planned. Now we can properly gut Apex.”
Her private subnet, the Neural Nexus, unfolded in matte black panels, neon lines cascading down the virtual walls like acid rain. “Router,” she commanded, her voice cutting through the suddenly humid air. “Initiate server-side ejection. Boot Bastos Vex from my private instance. Scrub every cached packet tied to him.”
Router let out a triumphant series of modem screeches, its six cybernetic legs digging into the plush carpet. Bastos’s image flickered, a momentary glitch in his otherwise unflappable composure. “Now, Mazra, there’s no need for such drastic measures,” he began, a rare note of surprise in his tone. “We’re partners now, whether you like it or not.”
“Partners?” Mazra’s laugh was brittle, humorless. “You manufactured a balance-sheet ambush against me. There’s only one response to that.”
Before Bastos could utter another word, Router lunged, its metallic jaws clamping down on the air where Bastos’s virtual avatar had been. With a sharp crackle of static, Bastos Vex’s image dissolved, forcibly disconnected from Mazra’s immediate virtual space. The partition sealed, dropping the street roar sixty floors below to a dull hum.
[User ‘Vex, Bastos’ has been successfully expelled from your private subnet. All associated temporary data purged. Optimal capitalist ruthlessness detected. Bonus creds awarded.]
Mazra paid no attention to the reward ping, breathing past the ozone reek of the severance. Across the marble tiles, Jorik was already smoothing his lapels in the window reflection, drunk on sudden liquidity.
“My feed just updated!” Jorik squeaked, tapping frantically on his forearm projection. “My credit line cleared! Twelve figures! I knew it—the market finally recognizes visionary leadership! Obsidian is done!”
Before she could order Router to bite his throat, his thumbs blurred across his comm-slate, throwing an unencrypted broadcast flag into the open air above the terrace.
“Citizens of the sector!” Jorik’s projection boomed across three grid-levels. “Apex Solutions hereby declares an immediate hostile takeover of Obsidian Corp! Prepare for liquidation, Bastos Vex! The real titan is here!”
Router, having finished its task of expelling Bastos, walked back to Mazra’s desk. It opened its mechanical jaws and, with a soft plink, deposited the now-severed surveillance wire directly onto her polished data-slate. The wire pulsed once, then went dark.
The Central OS chime went shrill, dropping its cheerful tone entirely as every holographic billboard outside snapped from azure to an emergency crimson glare.
[Warning: Unsolicited corporate aggression detected. Publicly declared hostile takeover initiated. Apex Crucible arbitration protocols engaged. Defendant: Mazra Qen.]
