Chapter 6 of 10

Fugitive of Nova

851 words

The holocall dissolved into a shower of sapphire pixels. Chanda stood frozen in the sanctuary alcove, the serene quiet shattered by Phirun’s parting words. Sokha, sensing the abrupt shift in her companion’s demeanor, rubbed her head against Chanda’s leg, a low rumble vibrating in her chest. Outside, the holographic prayer flags, usually a shimmering veil of data, flickered erratically, briefly revealing the rain-slicked cobbles of the stone plaza. A tremor rippled through the augmented reality overlay. Then, the entire Silk-Net Enclave grid dissolved. The vibrant neon data-streams that wove through Krung-Thep Nova vanished, replaced by a stark, unsettling silence. Chanda's comm-link buzzed with a torrent of incoming messages. Her Tevan Conglomerate accounts, moments ago flush with the legacy of her family's empire, now flashed 'ACCESS DENIED'. A single, ominous message from the Tevan Board's emergency channel pushed through: 'UNANIMOUS VOTE: ASSETS FROZEN. REVOCATION OF ALL NETWORK IDENTIFICATION PENDING.' Phirun had moved with terrifying speed. "He's erasing me," Chanda muttered, her voice brittle. "Every digital trace. Every legal record." Sokha let out a sharp growl, her tail lashing. Suddenly, the distant wail of high-speed sirens cut through the heavy air, growing louder, closer. Crimson emergency lights pulsed through the chapel's stained-glass windows, painting the ancient carvings in an infernal glow. Corporate Enforcers. Their sleek, black vehicles, emblazoned with the coiled serpent crest of the Veera Security Network, screeched to a halt at the main entrance, forming an impenetrable barricade. "Naga-Zero! We know you're in there! Surrender now!" A synthetic voice boomed through external speakers, distorted by a low-frequency modulator. Chanda's gaze swept over the nave, calculating escape routes. The main plaza was sealed. The rear exits led to public thoroughfares, too exposed. She needed a distraction, something reckless enough to buy precious seconds. Just then, the roar of an internal combustion engine, a raw, anachronistic sound in the neon metropolis, echoed from beyond the barricade. A sleek, obsidian-black luxury hover-car, the very model Arthit favored, careened around the corner. It wasn't hovering; it was scraping pavement, tires spitting sparks. Arthit, a silhouette of barely controlled fury and desperation, slammed the accelerator. The vehicle hurtled directly into the Veera Security barricade, a suicidal act of defiance. Metal shrieked against metal. The impact threw Arthit forward, the airbag deploying with a violent puff. Enforcers, caught off guard, stumbled back, their formation broken. One of them, a burly figure in reinforced armor, recovered first. He swung a stun-baton in a wide, vicious arc. The crack of the impact reached Chanda even through the thick stone walls, a sickening thud against flesh and bone. Arthit staggered, clutching his ribs, his face contorted in a silent gasp of pain. He dropped to one knee, but his eyes, despite the agony, found Chanda's in the stone archway. "Go!" he choked out, his voice raw, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. Kiet, who had somehow managed to slip past the initial chaos, appeared beside Chanda, his face grim. "My hyper-bike's on the east side," he said, his hand already on her arm. "Sokha, with us!" Sokha sprang onto the bike's rear seat, settling behind Kiet. Chanda hesitated for a fraction of a second, her gaze fixed on Arthit, sprawled on the ground, struggling to breathe, the enforcers converging on him. This man, who had discarded her so carelessly, was now bleeding for her. "Chanda!" Arthit screamed, his voice tearing through the chaos, a desperate plea laced with years of bitter regret. She tore her eyes away, clambering onto the hyper-bike. Kiet gunned the engine. The bike surged forward, a blur of chrome and black, weaving through the shrine's lesser-used side passages, leaving the cacophony behind. They burst onto a deserted service alley, the city's neon glow a distant smear against the darkening sky. As they sped away, Chanda felt a strange, cold presence bloom at the base of her skull. It was a familiar sensation, one she had known for years. The neural-link upgrades Phirun had helped her install, the very ones that sharpened her focus and enhanced her cybernetic perception, were now actively broadcasting her location. He wasn't just freezing her assets; he was hunting her through her own hardware. He had embedded a backdoor, a master key to her own mind. "He's in my head," she gasped, gripping Kiet's shoulder. "My neural-link. He's tracking me." Kiet swerved to avoid a fallen data-kiosk. "We need to go dark. Completely. No signal, no trace." He glanced back at her, his expression tight. "There's only one way for you to vanish from Phirun's grid. A jury-rigged EMP on the neural port. But it's…" He trailed off, not needing to voice the risk. Chanda knew it. A raw electromagnetic pulse directly to her brain's interface. A 50% chance of permanent nullification. Brain death. She looked down at her gloved hand, then at the sleek, integrated port on her temple, a discreet curve beneath her hairline. Her escape, her very existence, hinged on a coin toss with oblivion. Her own mentor, the man who had guided her, was now forcing her to gamble her mind for a ghost of freedom.
