After years of barely scraping by, burning through his modest inheritance on obscure alchemical texts and fruitless meditative practices, he remained a novice, perpetually stuck at the lowest tier of arcane mastery. With only a handful of gold marks left, his patience for academic asceticism evaporated. He decided to wager his last coin on a night of forbidden revelry with Lyra Thorne, the Collegium's Arch-Librarian. Renowned for her icy composure and an intellect as sharp as any blade, she was notoriously impervious to such mundane overtures. Yet, the sheer audacity of his offer, and perhaps the unusual sum, prompted her to agree. Julian knew it was a reckless, desperate gamble, but he had no inkling that this single act, driven by base desires, would shatter the walls of his arcane stagnation and awaken a power far older and more potent than any taught within Aethelburg's hallowed halls.
