Chapter 7 of 10
The Blood-Pit Brawl
924 words
The roar of the dire-bear rattled Tilla’s teeth, a primal sound that vibrated through the very sand of the Blood-Pit. She stood alone in the center of the vast, circular arena, its iron pikes glinting with the dried crimson of countless past contestants. Above, the crowd was a blur of jeering faces and a cacophony of bets, but Tilla’s focus narrowed to the massive creature before her.
It was a beast of nightmare, twice the size of a warhorse, with shaggy, soot-black fur and eyes that glowed a malevolent, sickly green. Chains of crackling shadow-magic, courtesy of the Council’s shamans, snaked around its thick limbs, feeding its rage and making its already formidable claws spark with dark energy. The dire-bear lunged, a whirlwind of muscle and fangs, kicking up plumes of dust that briefly obscured it from the stands.
Tilla didn't flinch. Her sniffling smile had vanished the moment the heavy iron gates clanged shut behind her. Now, only a terrifying calm settled over her features, a stillness that belied the furious storm building within. Karnok Val-Tir, perched in a prime viewing box beside the High Elders, leaned forward, a grim smile stretching his lips. He watched her, eager for the moment the ‘defective’ she-wolf he’d discarded would be torn limb from limb. The thought was a bitter balm to his wounded pride.
From a separate, more opulent sky-box, Tarkis Morvane observed, his posture deceptively casual. A glass of deep crimson liquid swirled in his hand, but his attention was absolute, every line of his lean body coiled with an unnerving tension. His gaze was fixed on Tilla, a silent, predatory assessment. She was his prize, his legacy, and he had thrown her into this pit. He expected a show.
As the dire-bear closed the distance, Tilla raised her head, her normally wide, innocent eyes narrowing to blazing slits. The air around her shimmered, not with the illusion of fear, but with an almost visible pressure. A low hum began to emanate from her, a resonant thrum that seemed to sink into the very bones of the beast. The dire-bear, mid-lunge, faltered. Its green eyes, brimming with shaman-fueled malice, flickered with an ancient confusion.
Then, Tilla’s eyes erupted. Blinding, ethereal platinum light burst forth from them, not merely reflecting, but *radiating* the artifact’s power. It was a hue so pure, so potent, it seemed to burn away the very shadows that clung to the dire-bear. A gasp collectively ripped through the crowd, their jeers dying in their throats.
“*Submit*,” Tilla’s voice resonated, not a shout, but a command that bypassed ears and struck directly at the core of the beast’s being. It was the voice of a primal force, a sovereign will. The dire-bear, magically enraged just moments before, whimpered. Its massive body trembled, then slowly, agonizingly, it lowered itself to the sand. Its head bowed, its glowing green eyes dimming, acknowledging the overwhelming power emanating from the slight, luminous figure before it.
The entire arena fell into a stunned, breathless hush. Every wolf, every elder, every guard, every gambler—they were all transfixed. The dire-bear, a creature infamous for its untameable savagery, was groveling before Tilla Vokaris. The girl who was supposed to be weak. The girl who was supposed to be *dead*.
Karnok gripped the velvet armrest of his box until the polished cherrywood splintered beneath his claws. He saw not a defeated foe, but a vision of what he had casually tossed aside. The raw, untamed power radiating from her was unmistakable. A true Luna, perhaps even something more, something ancient and terrible. She could have elevated his pack, made him a king among Alphas. He had scorned her, broken her, and now she stood, bathed in the light of an impossible triumph, proving him a fool of the highest order.
In his own elevated perch, Tarkis Morvane watched, his lips parting almost imperceptibly. His crimson drink forgotten, he gripped the railing, knuckles white. A low growl, primal and involuntary, rumbled in his chest. His blood thrummed with a hunger he hadn’t felt in centuries, a burning desire to claim the raw, radiant power that had just brought a corrupted beast to its knees. She was magnificent, terrifying, and utterly *his*. The chaos, the infuriating cheerfulness, it was all a mask. Beneath it was a queen, a force of nature, and the sheer audacity of her, the intoxicating scent of her power, was driving him to the brink.
“The challenger, Tilla Vokaris, is victorious!” Raskan’s booming voice finally broke the spell, though it sounded oddly strained. “She has subdued the beast! Let the gates open!”
The crowd erupted then, not in jeers, but in a confused, roaring cheer. Tilla, her platinum eyes slowly dimming back to their natural shade, offered a small, weary smile to the groveling dire-bear before turning towards the slowly opening gates. The moment she stepped onto the packed earth outside the arena, the last vestiges of her strength seemed to desert her.
Her knees buckled. A sharp, searing pain tore through her stomach, radiating outward like a spiderweb of fire. The air felt thin, her head swam. She barely registered Gilly’s honking, frantic approach, or the shouts of the guards. Her vision swam, the triumphant faces of the crowd blurring into shapeless smears of color. She slumped to her knees, a violent cough wracking her body. Her hand flew to her mouth, and when she pulled it away, a single, glowing drop of silver-red blood pulsed on her palm, a tiny, horrifying sun, before sizzling into the earth.
