Chapter 4 of 10
The Gauntlet of Glamour
1.2k words
The High Horn of the Sunspire shrieked a discordant fanfare, signaling the start of the First Trial: The Hunt of the Lunarstag. Alphas, bristling with competitive energy, poured into the Cinderbark Forest, a dense tangle of primeval ironwood and thorny brambles that skirted the Citadel’s formidable base. Tilla, however, meandered. She bounced on the balls of her feet, an unsettlingly cheerful aura radiating from her as she paused to admire a patch of glowing moss. It was a perfect performance of ditzy disinterest.
“Oh, look, Gilly-goose, isn’t it just darling?” she chirped, though Gilly was nowhere in sight, likely still hiding in a crevice of Karnok’s tent, honking quiet curses at the dark seer’s shadow. “So luminous! Almost as bright as… well, me!” She giggled, an utterly fake sound that grated on every nerve ending of the Alpha of the Val-Tir clan, who was currently wrestling a thorny vine from his expensive tunic just a few yards away.
Karnok Val-Tir, mud already staining his pristine hunting leathers, watched her with narrowed eyes, his jaw working. His hand, still swollen and bruised from her 'accidental' squeeze, throbbed a rhythm of furious frustration. She ought to have been *lost*. She was branded *worthless*. Not prancing about like a dandelion puffball, radiating an unholy glow that made the very air around her seem to shimmer. And she was certainly not supposed to be sniffing a poisonous lumiflora with such *glee*.
As Tilla drifted deeper among the timber, her movements were a study in deceptive grace. Her head remained tilted, eyes wide and innocent, as if truly enchanted by a particularly tenacious beetle. But beneath that façade, her artifact-enhanced senses hummed, mapping the forest floor, detecting every subtle disturbance. She ‘tripped’ over a barely concealed snare, neatly dismantling its tripwire with a flick of her boot before continuing her skip. She ‘stumbled’ into a thicket, her hand ‘accidentally’ brushing against a camouflaged net, severing the rope with a casual swipe of a glowing fingernail.
Each time, a faint *snap* or *thump* echoed through the trees, unheard by anyone but Karnok, who swore under his breath, watching his carefully laid traps mysteriously fail one after another. He’d spent hours meticulously setting them, specifically designing a few particularly nasty ones for any stray *Vokaris* wolf who dared venture too far. Yet here she was, dancing through his cunning snares like they were buttercups.
“Oh, Alpha Karnok!” Tilla called out, spotting him struggling with a complex bramble bush. “Are you stuck, honey? Do you need a little help?” Her voice dripped candied honey, laced with an innocence that was anything but.
Karnok’s control snapped. He tore through the last of the brambles, his face a mask of primal fury. “You little viper!” he snarled, charging her. His bulk was formidable, his Alpha-strength legendary. “What games are you playing, Tilla? You think I don’t see you? You think I don’t know what you’re doing to my hunt?”
“Games?” Tilla tilted her head, her eyes wide and sparkling, utterly devoid of fear. “I’m just enjoying the pretty forest, Alpha. It’s so much more fun than that stuffy Citadel, don’t you think? Oh, look, a little froggy!” She pointed at a mud puddle near his feet, completely ignoring his rage.
He stopped an arm’s length from her, his breath coming in ragged gasps. “Don’t you dare mock me, girl! I know you’re up to something. I know you’re not what you seem. I will find out your secret, and when I do, I will rip it from you. You’re a defective, Tilla. A mistake. And you will *pay* for every moment you’ve dared to shine.” His hand shot out, not to strike, but to grab her arm, to exert his Alpha dominance, to crush her infuriating spirit.
A flicker of genuine pain, swift and deep, crossed Tilla’s face, instantly masked by her usual insipid smile. The memory of his words at her ‘funeral,’ of his cold dismissal, burned. *Broken. Mistake.* Not again. Not ever again. A sudden, blinding surge of pure, raw energy detonated within her. It wasn't a conscious act, but an uncontrollable reflex, a protective outburst of the power swirling inside her.
A brilliant, shimmering pulse of lunar light erupted from Tilla, radiating outward with shocking force. It slammed into Karnok, not with the concussive power of a physical blow, but with an almost magical expulsion, like he’d been struck by a focused burst of pure moonlight. He didn’t just fall; he *flew*. His large frame hurtled backward, tumbling end over end, before splashing down with a colossal *THWUMP* into the very mud pit where she’d pointed out the ‘froggy.’
He lay there, stunned, sputtering, covered head to toe in thick, black muck, his Alpha pride utterly shattered. Tilla stared at her hands, which still glowed faintly, her perfectly composed, bubbly mask slipping for a fraction of a second, revealing a flicker of genuine shock. *Oopsie.*
A low, dangerous chuckle rumbled from behind her. “That, little wolf, was quite the display.”
Tilla spun around, her heart giving a frantic flutter that had nothing to do with fear and everything to do with the impossibly handsome vampire now standing just feet away. Tarkis Morvane. He had materialized from the shadows of the towering boles, his gaze, dark as midnight, fixed on her. A faint wisp of power still radiated from her, a scent that pulled at some primitive, buried part of him, drawing him in even as it infuriated him.
He moved with a predator’s grace, closing the distance between them in a single, fluid step. Before she could react, his hand shot out, not to harm, but to pin her. Her back hit the rough bark of an old ironwood tree with a soft thud. His other hand bracketed her head, fingers digging lightly into the bark, trapping her. He leaned in, his gaze piercing, scrutinizing every inch of her glowing form. The air thickened, static crackling across her collarbones with a heat that threatened to overwhelm her senses.
“A runt wolf,” he murmured, his voice a low, silken rasp that turned the fine hairs on her nape to wire. “Wielding ancient, untamed power. Blasting Alphas into mud puddles with… what was that, exactly? A sunbeam? A moonbeam?” He paused, his gaze dropping to her throat, where her pulse fluttered wildly. His fangs, just visible at the corner of his lips, seemed to lengthen imperceptibly.
“Tell me, Tilla,” he continued, his voice dropping to a near whisper, his breath ghosting across her skin. His fangs grazed the delicate skin just above her jugular, a silent, primal threat. “How does a pathetic, discarded creature like you come to possess a power that rivals the ancient Blood Lords? How does a mere wolf, supposedly powerless, command the essence of the primal world?” His eyes locked with hers, burning with an intensity that promised both profound danger and an even more profound obsession.
“The artifact,” he breathed, his fangs pressing just a fraction more, needle-sharp and cold, sparking an intoxicating panic through her. “Give it to me, little wolf. By midnight, it will be in my possession. Or I will tear you apart to retrieve it myself.”
