Chapter 1 of 10

The Quiche and the Catalyst

1.4k words

The mini-quiche, a delicate spinach-and-feta creation, crumbled perfectly between Tilla Vokaris’s teeth. A faint drizzle of some herb-infused oil lingered on her tongue, an elegant counterpoint to the bland sorrow permeating the Grand Hall of the Val-Tir stronghold. She hummed softly, a bright, tuneless melody that seemed utterly out of place amidst the hushed murmurs and somber cloaks of her supposed mourners. “A shame, truly,” an elder matron said in a hushed voice, dabbing at dry eyes with a lace handkerchief. “Such a sweet, simple girl. A defective, yes, but harmless. To be taken by the North-Wind Chill, just like that…” Tilla stifled a giggle, instead opting for a dramatically mournful sigh. Harmless? She was currently contemplating the structural integrity of the dessert table. Defective? Only if you considered an eidetic memory for slights and a penchant for elaborate, long-form revenge schemes a defect. The North-Wind Chill was a convenient fiction, a blanket excuse for any inconvenient death in the northern territories, and certainly preferable to the truth: Tilla Vokaris had merely vanished, leaving behind a carefully crafted trail of breadcrumbs leading to a shallow, pre-dug grave. She picked up a pastry tart. This one, sun-dried tomato and goat cheese, was a revelation. It was almost enough to distract her from the crushing ache in her chest, the one that had settled in when Karnok, her *ex-Alpha*, had so cheerfully announced her demise a week prior. *“A tragedy, beloved pack! But we must look to the future, to strength, to purity!”* And what better way to ensure purity than to discard the mate who reminded him of his own imperfections? Tilla's inner wolf, a subdued, anxious thing since her rejection, let out a low, wounded whimper. She silenced it with another mouthful of flaky crust. The large oak doors to the Grand Hall swung open with a theatrical flourish, silencing the room. Karnok Val-Tir, broad-shouldered and impossibly handsome in his ceremonial Alpha furs, strode to the raised dais. He paused, surveying the assembled pack, his gaze sweeping over Tilla without a flicker of recognition. She'd always been good at blending, at being overlooked. He cleared his windpipe, a sound that routinely commanded instant attention, but today, it was infused with a saccharine grief that Tilla found utterly nauseating. “My loyal pack. We gather this eve to remember our dear Tilla Vokaris. Though her spirit has ascended to the Ever-Woods, her memory will forever… *blossom* within our hearts.” He paused, allowing a moment for the collective, performative sniffles. He *blossomed*? Tilla almost choked on her tart. She was more of a thorny weed, thank you very much. “However,” Karnok continued, his voice shifting, swelling with artificial optimism, “life, even in sorrow, must forge ahead. Our future, our lineage, demands a strong, clear path.” He gestured to the side, where a slender, impeccably coiffed figure stepped forward. It was her cousin Vanya, whose scent was a potent mix of expensive perfume and barely concealed smugness. “Therefore,” Karnok boomed, a wide, predatory smile stretching his lips, “it is with immense pride that I announce Vanya Val-Tir, daughter of my esteemed Beta, as my new chosen mate!” The hall erupted in a roar of approval, a cascade of relieved cheers. Vanya preened, silver-ringed irises flashing with triumph as she accepted Karnok’s arm. They made a strikingly beautiful pair, all polished teeth and perfectly groomed fur, exactly what a ‘pure’ Alpha deserved. Nausea knotted sharp and sour against Tilla's ribs. Not a moment of mourning, not a single solitary tear. Just a quick, clean replacement. The buttery snack abruptly tasted like ash. Her bubbly persona, typically a sturdy shield, cracked. A cold, clear fury, sharp as broken glass, settled in. This wasn't just about him moving on. This was about the blatant disrespect, the immediate, public erasure. She was worth less than a week’s mourning. *Oh, Karnok*, she thought, her smile widening into something genuinely terrifying beneath her veil. *You have no idea what you’ve just done.* Later, as the pack descended into a drunken stupor, celebrating the union of their Alpha and his *new* mate, Tilla slipped away. Her destination: the Val-Tir pack vault, a place she knew intimately from her forgotten life as his betrothed. The ironbound, magically sealed door was child’s play for someone who’d spent years cataloging its weaknesses in her mind, purely for hypothetical ‘just in case’ scenarios. It clunked open with a soft groan, revealing a cavernous space filled with ancestral relics and glimmering trinkets. Her goal was simple, wonderfully petty: replace Alpha Karnok’s cherished great-great-grandmother’s ceremonial hunting knife with a butter knife she’d pilfered from the kitchen. It was a small act, but the thought of his face when he discovered it sent a thrill of vindication through her. She was almost at the display case when a draft of air, charged with primeval power and the scent of night-blooming jasmine and iron, pricked her senses. A figure, tall and impossibly lean, detached itself from the deeper shadows. He moved with a silent, fluid grace, a living shadow with eyes that glowed like twin rubies in the dim light. Tarkis Morvane. The legendary, immortal Vampire Lord. Her carefully constructed airheaded façade faltered. He was supposed to be a myth, a bedtime story for naughty pups. Not standing three feet away from her, his gaze fixed on the very same display case she was approaching. “Well, hello there,” Tilla chirped, her voice a shade too high, her hands fluttering instinctively to her veil. “Lost a contact lens, perhaps? I’ve done that. It’s absolutely *ghastly*.” Tarkis didn’t respond. His attention was completely absorbed by the small, intricately carved pedestal within the case. Upon it rested a tear-shaped, milky white gem, pulsating with a soft, ethereal light. The Moon Tear, the Lycans’ most sacred artifact. The very relic that had driven centuries of conflict between their species. His long, pale fingers stretched towards the case, a silent, possessive hunger in his posture. Tilla, seized by a flare of protective, vengeful instinct, acted without planning. Her wolf, customarily so timid, snarled behind her teeth. This was *her* pack’s sacred relic, however neglected, however much she despised its Alpha. This wasn’t for a *vampire*. With a surprisingly quick lunge, Tilla launched herself forward, intending to slap his hand away. Tarkis, taken aback by the sudden, absurd attack from a masked, bubbly woman, instinctively recoiled. His arm swung, catching Tilla squarely on the chin. Her head snapped back, stars scattering across her vision. As she stumbled, her hand, still outstretched, connected with the display case. The delicate pedestal, jostled by the impact, wobbled. The Moon Tear, dislodged, tumbled free, arcing through the air like a falling star. Both Tilla and Tarkis lunged simultaneously, a desperate, silent scramble. Tilla, still off balance, parted her lips in surprise, and the Moon Tear, with a sickeningly soft *plink*, slipped down her gullet. A blinding, searing heat erupted in her belly, then spread like liquid fire through her veins. A soft, vibrant glow emanated from her, turning the musty vault into the heart of a blossoming supernova. Her vision sharpened, every dust mote dancing in the air suddenly a crystal-clear entity. Her ‘defective’ wolf, once little more than a phantom murmur, roared into life, an unrelenting force that thrummed through every fiber of her being. Her hair, previously a dull brown, flared to a shimmering, iridescent silver, cascading down her back like liquid moonlight. The veil, forgotten, disintegrated into fairy dust. Tarkis Morvane stood frozen, ruby irises fixing on her as his carefully maintained composure shattered. He stared at the radiant, glowing woman, at the silver-haired powerhouse who had just swallowed an artifact he’d been seeking for millennia. A slow, terrifying fury gathered in his millennial gaze. Before Tilla could even comprehend the seismic shift in her own existence, Tarkis moved. He was impossibly fast, a blur of motion. One moment she was glowing, the next his iron fingers locked around her neck, lifting her clear off the ground. Her feet dangled uselessly, her newfound power helpless against his primeval strength. He pressed his face close to hers, his sharp, predatory features mere inches away. His eyes, burning with a furious, unholy light, bore into hers. Then he inhaled. A deep, shuddering breath, drawing in the scent of her, the newly awakened power, the subtle, sweet musk of her true wolf, now amplified a thousandfold. His expression, already a mask of rage, twisted into something akin to horrified disbelief. “You didn’t just eat the Blood-Pearl…” His voice, a low, dangerous growl, was laced with an ancient, primal recognition. “…you’re my fated mate.”
