Chapter 3: Whispers Against the Storm

1.4k words

A cold dread settled deep within Farhan’s chest. The blackmailer's voice, devoid of emotion, echoed in his mind. *"Tonight. The old warehouse by the docks. Come alone, or your princess will pay a price far greater than any secret."* The words were a venomous promise, twisting his insides into knots. He had to go. He pushed the phone deep into his pocket, his hand clenching around it. Subiya. Her name was a fragile prayer on his lips. He glanced at her across the living room, humming softly as she arranged flowers in a vase, her silhouette bathed in the soft afternoon light. Her laugh, so bright and free, was a sound he couldn't imagine extinguishing. He would do anything to keep that light in her eyes. He forced a smile, walking towards her. "Mohtarma, what beautiful work you're doing." His voice felt strained, but she didn't seem to notice, her focus entirely on the delicate petals. She turned, her smile widening. "Farhan! They're for our bedroom. Don't you think the jasmine will smell lovely tonight?" Her eyes, wide and innocent, held no hint of the storm brewing within him. His heart ached. "More than lovely, Princess. Just like everything you touch." He reached out, gently tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear, his fingers brushing her soft skin. He wanted to hold her, to tell her everything, but the risk was too great. He had to be strong, for her. Later, as dusk painted the sky in hues of orange and purple, they lay together on his bed. Farhan had suggested a quiet evening in, claiming he was tired from work. Subiya, ever understanding, had agreed instantly, her soft hand finding his. "Baby, you've been so quiet since you came back," she murmured, her head resting on his chest, her fingers tracing invisible patterns on his shirt. Her voice was a gentle caress, full of concern he wished he didn't deserve. He tightened his arm around her, pulling her closer until he could feel the steady beat of her heart against his own. "Just thinking, jaan. About us. About everything." It wasn't entirely a lie. He was thinking about them, about the future he desperately wanted to protect. Her gaze met his, her eyes shimmering with affection. "What about us, my king?" she whispered, her smile soft and inviting. She looked up at him, her face alight with an innocent curiosity that melted some of the ice in his veins. He looked at her, truly looked. Her eyes, pools of warm chocolate, held so much kindness, so much genuine love. The way they crinkled at the corners when she smiled, the subtle freckle just beneath her left eye – details he had memorized, cherished. He loved the way her brow furrowed slightly when she was deep in thought, and how her breath hitched just a little when he kissed her. He lifted a hand, gently running his fingers through her long, dark hair, feeling the silkiness against his skin. "Just how lucky I am, Princess. Every morning I wake up, and you're there, or I know you will be. You bring so much light into my life, Mohtarma. It's like… like the world only started truly glowing once you walked into it." Her cheeks flushed a soft pink, a tiny, almost imperceptible blush that always delighted him. She tried to hide her face in his chest, but he gently tilted her chin up, forcing her to meet his gaze. "Don't hide that beautiful blush, jaan. It's one of my favorite things." "You're so cheesy, baby," she mumbled, but her smile betrayed her. Her eyes sparkled, reflecting the gentle adoration in his own. He chuckled softly, his thumb caressing her cheek. "Only for my Queen. I could write a thousand poems about your smile, Subiya. The way it lights up your entire face, reaching your eyes, making them dance. It’s like watching the sunrise, every single time." She laughed, a melodic sound that chased away some of the shadows in his mind. "And I could listen to them all, my love." She snuggled deeper into him, her warmth seeping into his very bones. He kissed her forehead, a lingering, tender kiss that spoke volumes of his devotion. "You know, Mohtarma, I watch you sometimes. The way you hum when you're cooking, the slight tilt of your head when you're listening intently, how you always, always smooth out the wrinkles on my shirts, even when I'm still wearing them. Every tiny habit, every small gesture. They're all pieces of the most wonderful woman I've ever known." He moved his lips to her eyes, pressing soft kisses to each eyelid. "These eyes, they see so much good in the world, and in me. They’re so expressive, telling me everything even when you don't say a word." Then he kissed her nose, a playful peck. "And this cute little nose, always twitching when you're trying not to laugh." His gaze dropped to her lips, soft and inviting. He kissed them gently, letting the kiss deepen just slightly, a silent promise. "These lips, jaan, they speak such kind words, and they taste like heaven." He pulled back just enough to look at her again, his fingers still running through her hair, tangling in the soft strands. "You're the most beautiful, most precious person in my life, Subiya. Aap meri duniya ho. My whole world. And I promise you, I'll always be here. When you're tired, I'll make sure you rest. When you're stressed, I'll listen to every worry. When you're sick, I'll nurse you back to health. When you're anxious, I'll hold your hand until the fear fades. When you're overwhelmed, I'll carry your burdens with you." "I'll always remind you to drink your water, to eat on time, to take a moment for yourself. Because your well-being, your happiness, is my priority. Always. Forever. You are safe with me, my love. You are cherished beyond words." Subiya’s eyes welled up, not with sadness, but with an overwhelming surge of emotion. A single tear escaped, tracing a path down her cheek, but her lips curved into a joyful, uncontrollable smile. She sniffled, her voice thick with emotion. "Oh, Farhan… my baby. My king. I don't know what I did to deserve you." "You just existed, jaan," he whispered, pulling her into a tight, secure hug, her face buried in his neck. He held her close, feeling her warmth, her soft body pressed against his. For a moment, the world outside, the blackmail, the danger, all faded away. There was only her, safe in his arms. He played with her hair, running his hand through it again and again, finding comfort in the simple, loving gesture. He kissed the top of her head, inhaling her scent, wanting to bottle this moment forever. He wished he could stay like this, lost in her embrace, forever protected from the storm. But the real world was calling, and he knew he couldn't hide from it much longer. The thought of the old warehouse, dark and desolate, sent a shiver down his spine. He had to face it, and he had to protect her from knowing. This perfect, serene moment with Subiya was a stark contrast to the grim task awaiting him. Her soft breathing against his chest, the innocent content in her posture, solidified his resolve. He would protect this peace, this happiness, at any cost. He pulled back slightly, looking into her still-smiling eyes. "Meri princess, it’s getting late. I… I need to step out for a bit. There's something I forgot at the office. I won't be long." Her smile faltered, replaced by a flicker of concern. "Now? But it's almost dark, baby. Can't it wait till morning? You seemed so tired." He forced a casual shrug, trying to hide the urgency churning within him. "It's important, jaan. Just a quick run. I promise I'll be back before you even miss me." He leaned in, giving her one last, lingering kiss. "You rest. I'll be back." He disentangled himself from her embrace, the warmth instantly leaving him. As he stood up, he saw the faint glint of worry in her eyes, a question forming on her lips. He turned away before she could voice it, before his resolve could crumble. The moment his phone buzzed with an anonymous text, a single word flashing on the screen, a word that ripped him from their loving bubble and plunged him back into the cold reality: *"Waiting."* ---
