Chapter 3: Imperial Entanglement

1.2k words

Sand swirled in violent gusts as the heavy repulsorcraft descended. High-pitched whines from the engines vibrated through the soles of Slade’s boots, shaking the dusty desert floor. Above him, the metallic, triangular underbelly of an Imperial patrol transport blotted out the harsh light of the twin suns. Engine heat blasted against his orange-and-black armored mask. He did not flinch. Decades of warfare had conditioned him to remain perfectly still in the face of incoming threats, analyzing every variable before making a single move. Hissing loudly, a hydraulic ramp lowered from the vessel's belly. White-armored soldiers marched out in structured pairs, their heavy boots kicking up clouds of orange dust. They held black, compact rifles tightly against their chests, their movements rigid and highly rehearsed. They looked like soldiers, but they lacked the fluid grace of true predators. Slade’s single eye tracked their formation, instantly spotting the gaps in their defensive perimeter. Their armor was bulky, restricting their peripheral vision, and they relied far too heavily on the intimidation factor of their uniform. One of them, sporting an orange shoulder pauldron that designated him as the squad leader, stepped forward. He raised his weapon, aiming it directly at Slade’s chest. "Identify yourself, citizen," the leader barked, his voice distorted by his helmet's vocal synthesizers. "You are in violation of Imperial curfew and are suspected of hostile actions against local citizens. Lower your weapons immediately." Slowly, Slade let his hands hover just inches above his custom blasters. His mind, enhanced by the military serum coursing through his veins, processed the scene at ten times the speed of an ordinary human. He counted eight troopers in total, plus two more piloting the transport above. These men were sloppy. Their weight was distributed poorly, their fingers pressing too hard against the triggers, showing a lack of discipline. If this was the elite force that kept the galaxy in a state of terror, Slade was deeply unimpressed. Underneath the thick plates of his promethium-mesh suit, his muscles coiled like steel springs. He did not offer a verbal response. A silent mercenary was a deadly one, and he had no intention of negotiating with local law enforcement. "Last warning!" the squad leader shouted, stepping closer. "Get on your knees and place your hands behind your head, or we will open fire." Instead of complying, Slade moved. He blurred forward, his enhanced speed rendering him a streak of orange and black against the dull desert backdrop. Before the squad leader could even squeeze his trigger, Slade closed the distance, his gloved hand clamping onto the barrel of the leader's E-11 blaster. A heavy blaster bolt discharged into the dirt as Slade wrenched the weapon upward, snapping the stormtrooper's wrist with a sickening crack. The man screamed, but the sound was cut short as Slade drove a brutal knee into his armored midsection, shattering the plastoid plate and sending him crashing to the ground. Instantly, the remaining seven troopers began firing. Red plasma bolts lit up the dusty air, zipping past Slade's head and shoulders. One bolt caught him squarely in the shoulder, the sheer kinetic energy pushing him back half a step. Pain flared briefly, but his advanced armor absorbed the brunt of the heat, dispersing the energy across the promethium fibers. His rapid healing factor immediately went to work, dampening the superficial burn before it could impact his performance. Spinning on his heel, Slade raised the captured E-11 blaster. He squeezed the trigger twice. Two precise shots tore through the chest plates of the nearest troopers, dropping them instantly into the sand. "Form a perimeter!" another trooper yelled, his voice cracking with panic. "He's armed! Shoot to kill!" They tried to scatter, but their heavy armor made them slow and clumsy. Slade vaulted over a low stone wall, using the concrete barrier as temporary cover while plasma bolts chipped away at the edges, sending hot sparks flying into the air. He analyzed the weapon in his hand. It was crude, lacking the balance of his terrestrial firearms, but the plasma output was undeniably lethal. He adjusted his stance, adapting to the lack of recoil and the slight delay in the energy bolt's travel time. Pop-flashing from behind the wall, Slade fired a rapid three-round burst. Each bolt found its mark, striking the troopers in the unarmored gaps at their necks and underarms. They crumpled like discarded ragdolls, their weapons clattering against the stones. Only three troopers remained on the ground now, their firing patterns growing wild and undisciplined. Slade drew his signature broadsword from his back, the heavy blade gleaming under the harsh suns. Running directly into the path of their blaster fire, he deflected a stray bolt with the flat of his blade, a feat of pure, enhanced reflex. He closed the gap in a heartbeat, his sword slicing through the air with terrifying force. With a clean, horizontal sweep, he severed the barrel of one trooper's rifle before stepping inside the man’s guard. Slade drove the pommel of his sword directly into the trooper's helmet visor, shattering the dark glass and sending him sprawling, unconscious and bleeding. Another trooper tried to tackle him from behind, but Slade anticipated the move. He sidestepped fluidly, grabbing the trooper by his utility belt and using his momentum to hurl him headfirst into the stone wall. The last standing trooper dropped his rifle, his hands shaking violently as he looked at the bodies of his squadmates. He turned to run back toward the transport's ramp, desperate to escape the nightmare that had descended upon them. Slade did not let him. He raised the captured blaster once more, taking half a second to align the sights, and fired a single shot directly through the back of the fleeing trooper's knee. Collapse was immediate. The trooper screamed in agony, clutching his shattered leg as he rolled onto his back, staring up at the towering figure of the mercenary approaching him. Slade stood over him, the tip of his bloody broadsword resting near the trooper's throat. His single eye glared down with a mixture of cold calculation and mild disappointment. If these armored weaklings represented the iron fist of the galactic government, then this galaxy was ripe for the taking. Yet, a tactical mind like Slade’s knew better than to underestimate the wider picture. There had to be stronger, more capable forces pulling the strings behind these expendable foot soldiers. Upward, the transport's pilot attempted to lift the vessel, intending to escape and report the failure. Slade reacted instantly, throwing his sword aside and drawing his dual blaster pistols, aiming directly through the cockpit glass. He fired a relentless stream of heavy plasma bolts into the viewport. The reinforced glass spiderwebbed and shattered under the concentrated barrage, killing the pilot instantly and causing the transport to tilt violently. Crashing hard into the desert sand, the massive vessel erupted in a small ball of fire, sending metal debris raining down around the perimeter. Slade casually retrieved his broadsword, wiping the blade clean on the uniform of a fallen trooper before shearing it back into its scabbard. As the last stormtrooper falls, a distorted voice crackles over a discarded comms unit: 'Report from Tatooine: unidentified highly dangerous combatant. Authorization granted for specialized unit deployment.'
