Chapter 2: Bounty Hunter's Welcome
1.6k words
Heat radiated off the endless sand dunes in shimmering, distorted waves, baking the desert canyon like a giant clay oven. Slade Wilson stood perfectly still, his single eye locked on the massive, green-skinned brute charging toward him. His Promethium mesh armor was already slick with sweat, but his mind remained as cold and sharp as ice.
Squealing like a slaughtered pig, the Gamorrean guard swung a heavy, dual-bladed vibro-axe. This weapon hummed with a vicious, high-frequency vibration that promised to shear through flesh and armor alike. It was a crude tool, but in the hands of such a monstrous creature, it possessed devastating force.
To a normal man, the oncoming wall of muscle and tusks would be a terrifying sight. Slade, however, felt only a cold, calculating calm as his enhanced brain processed the creature's trajectory at a speed ninety percent faster than any ordinary human. He didn't just see the attack; he saw the mechanical flaws in the swing, the over-extension of the shoulder, and the complete lack of balance.
Ducking under the horizontal sweep of the heavy axe, Slade felt the hot rush of displaced air whisper against his mask. The beast's momentum carried it forward, exposing a thick, fat-ringed neck that practically begged for a counter-strike.
Slade's hand shot out like a striking viper, his fingers wrapped tightly around the hilt of an improvised vibro-knife he had stripped from a dead raider earlier. This blade hummed in his palm, a strange, electric buzz that vibrated through the bones of his forearm, warming the synthetic leather of his glove.
Driving the blade upward, he aimed for the soft tissue beneath the creature's lower jaw. Resistance was minimal as the vibrating metal sheared through tough alien hide, sinking deep into the beast's throat. He twisted the hilt, maximizing the internal damage before the creature could even register the pain.
Blood, dark and thick, sprayed across the orange-and-black plating of Slade's chest as the Gamorrean choked on its own fluids. The massive creature staggered, its grip on the vibro-axe loosening before it crashed heavily into the dirt, kicking up a thick cloud of beige dust.
Yanking the knife free, Slade wiped the dark ichor on the dead guard's tattered tunic. His enhanced healing factor was already working overtime to combat the oppressive heat of this dual-sunned world, leaving a metallic taste in his mouth as his body rapidly regulated his internal temperature.
Checking his belt, Slade ran a hand over his empty holsters. His custom-made broadsword, his handguns, his specialized grenades—all gone, lost in whatever dimensional rift had deposited him here. Relying on scavenged weapons was a tactical nightmare, but a master assassin adapted to whatever tool was at hand.
"Amateurs," Slade muttered, his voice a low, mechanical rasp behind the faceplate of his helmet.
Before he could even search the massive corpse for useful intel, a sharp, clicking chatter echoed from the sandstone cliffs above. Three thin, reptilian creatures with bulbous black eyes and green, pebbled skin scrambled down the rocky slope, their strange, snout-nosed blasters raised.
"Don't make a sound, bounty!" one of them shrieked in a high-pitched, warbling tongue that Slade's tactical computer couldn't instantly translate, though the weapon pointed at his chest spoke clearly enough. "Jabba pays double if you're breathing, but he didn't say you needed all your limbs!"
Detached amusement flickered through Slade's chest as he observed their sloppy posture. They stood far too close together, their feet uneven on the loose gravel, and their weapons trembled with an excess of nervous energy that betrayed their fear.
These "bounty hunters" were a joke compared to the disciplined strike teams of the League of Assassins or the elite military forces he had commanded on Earth. This galaxy seemed to lack the concept of basic tactical discipline, relying instead on high-tech toys to make up for a complete lack of skill.
Control was everything to Slade. He had spent his entire life mastering his body, his mind, and his environment to ensure he would never again be a pawn to anyone else's agenda. Being torn from his world and dumped into this lawless sandbox felt like a personal insult, a violent reminder of his own vulnerability that he refused to tolerate.
"You should have kept your distance," Slade said, his tone devoid of any fear or hesitation.
Red plasma bolts suddenly erupted from the lead Rodian's blaster, sizzling through the air where Slade's head had been a fraction of a second prior. He was already in motion, a blur of grey and orange moving with superhuman agility across the uneven terrain.
Diving behind a rusted, half-buried moisture vaporator, Slade felt the intense heat of a second shot scorch the air near his hip. The smell of ozone and melting metal filled his nostrils, sharp and biting, as the plasma bolt boiled the ancient iron of his cover into liquid slag.
"Spread out! Flush him out!" the second alien screamed, scrambling to the left while his companion kept firing blindly, wild shots hitting nothing but empty dunes and ancient stone.
Such a predictable maneuver was almost insulting to Slade's intelligence. He calculated the rhythm of the suppressive fire, noting the slight delay between shots as the alien blaster recycled its energy.
Three shots, a brief pause for heat dissipation, then two more.
Springing from behind his metallic cover during the exact microsecond of the weapon's pause, Slade closed the distance before the shooter could even register his movement.
His gloved hand clamped over the Rodian's wrist, twisting the joint outward with a brutal, crushing force that shattered the delicate bones. The alien shrieked, dropping the blaster directly into Slade's waiting palm.
Spinning the screaming creature around to use as a meat shield, Slade pulled the trigger of the unfamiliar weapon. A bolt of crimson energy erupted from the barrel, burning a clean, smoking hole through the chest of the second Rodian who was attempting to flank him.
"Awkward balance," Slade commented, his thumb adjusting to the foreign grip of the blaster as he noted the lack of physical recoil. "But the lethality is acceptable."
Ending the struggle of the creature in his grip, Slade delivered a swift, crushing blow with his elbow to the back of the Rodian's neck, instantly severing the spinal cord. The limp body slipped from his grasp, collapsing into the sand.
Only one remained.
Terrified by the sudden, brutal demise of his comrades, the third Rodian scrambled backward, his large, multifaceted eyes wide with pure panic. He fired wildly, his hands shaking so violently that the red bolts sailed high into the cloudless sky.
"Wait! Please!" the alien whimpered, dropping his blaster and raising his thin, three-toed hands in a desperate plea for mercy. "We were just hired! We didn't know what you were!"
Slade stopped several paces away, the stolen blaster resting casually at his side. He stared down at the trembling creature, his single eye conveying a cold, clinical promise of death.
"Who is Jabba?" Slade demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous, quiet register that seemed to sap the remaining warmth from the desert air.
"Jabba! Jabba the Hutt!" the alien stammered, his chest heaving as he tried to find the words to save his life. "He rules this sector! He put a massive bounty on you after you killed his scouts in the dune sea! Please, I have credits, I can pay you!"
A single red bolt cut the plea short, leaving a smoking, blackened crater in the center of the alien's forehead. Slade didn't believe in leaving loose ends, and he certainly had no patience for whimpering cowards who lacked the resolve to finish what they started.
Sighing, he tossed the alien weapon aside. It was poorly constructed, prone to overheating, and lacked the tactile, mechanical satisfaction of his custom-made ballistic firearms.
Irritation flared in his chest as he looked at the bodies littering the canyon floor. These constant, low-level threats were beginning to grate on his nerves, wasting his energy and his limited ammunition.
Memories of his family tried to claw their way to the surface—brief, painful flashes of faces he had failed to protect. He ruthlessly crushed the thoughts before they could take root. Emotional attachment was a liability, a weakness that got men killed in his line of work, and he could not afford to be weak in a galaxy that was already actively hunting him.
He needed to find a way off this barren rock. He needed answers about how he had been pulled from his home, and more importantly, who or what possessed the power to transport him across realities.
Kneeling beside the dead Gamorrean, Slade searched the bulky corpse, his fingers brushing past leather pouches and strange, high-tech gadgets. He pulled out a small, metallic cylinder that projected a flickering blue hologram of a massive, slug-like creature when he accidentally pressed a button.
"Jabba," Slade murmured, memorizing the grotesque, bloated features of the alien warlord before pocketing the device.
If this Hutt ruled the local underworld, he would undoubtedly have the ships, technology, or information required to get off this planet. A direct confrontation was becoming more appealing by the minute.
Suddenly, a strange vibration hummed through the soles of his boots. Slade's enhanced senses, sharp as a razor, picked up a deep, mechanical thrumming coming from the upper atmosphere.
Standing up, he scanned the sky, his single eye narrowing as he looked past the shimmering heat waves.
A high-pitched whine cuts through the desert air, and a sleek, silver ship with Imperial insignia descends rapidly, its landing gear retracting as it hovers menacingly above Slade.
