Chapter 7 of 10
The God Who Begged

Olev merely grunted. “Unfortunate for them. Fortunate for us. Less resistance.” He wrenched the *Iron Maw’s* steering mechanism, a crude lever fashioned from a siege-behemoth’s spinal column. The leviathan-class titan, usually a lumbering fortress, bucked and screamed as its thrusters overloaded, forcing it into a ballistic dive.
[ *WARNING: STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY COMPROMISED. HULL BREACH IMMINENT.* ]
“Brace,” Olev drawled, the warning completely ignored. “We’re making a delivery.”
The air howled as the *Iron Maw* plunged through the chaotic winds, dodging chunks of airborne rock and screaming horned fiends. Its repurposed hull, a patchwork of salvaged armor plating and reinforced flesh-metal, vibrated violently. Below, the sprawling, spired fortress of Vashak stretched across a vast, cratered plain. Scrambling figures, tiny against the scale, streamed from every entrance.
With a deafening shriek of tearing metal and pulverizing stone, the *Iron Maw* slammed into the citadel's central spire, directly through what had to be its grandest entrance. Not a door, but a gaping wound. Concrete dust mixed with pulverized chitin exploded outwards, coating the cracked viewport.
The *Iron Maw’s* momentum carried it deep into a cavernous hall, its internal lamps flickering wildly. The chamber was opulent, decorated with obsidian carvings of triumphant horned conquerors, now partially caved in. A massive, ornate throne sat askew on a dais, partially buried under debris. Before it, a single figure, regal even in disarray, stumbled back from a holographic projection that was displaying evacuation coordinates.
Vashak the Desolator, Lord of the Rift, wore a crown of jagged, midnight-hued crystals. His skin bore the color of dried blood, his eyes glowed gold, and archaic plating sheathed his massive frame. He was not prepared for a titan to crash through his living room.
“The Necro-Thief,” Vashak hissed, his voice a low rumble, instantly recognizing Olev from the system projections. He raised a hand, and the air around him thickened, crackling with dark power. “You dare invade my sanctuary even as….”
Before Vashak could complete his sentence or fully manifest his power, a new, far more immediate tremor rippled through the bastion. The entire structure groaned, not from the *Iron Maw’s* impact, but from something far larger, far more fundamental. Through the gaping hole the titan had made, the sky was tearing wider. The geometric vanguard fleet was merely a prelude.
Vashak watched, pupils pinpricked as stone dust sifted across his shoulders. The cosmic tendrils, glimpsed briefly through his closing rift, were no longer distant. The rent in the sky expanded, bleeding iridescent light, revealing a monstrosity that dwarfed the entire blasted plain. He looked back at Olev, standing impassive beside the cracked steering column.
The Rift Lord's shoulders slumped. His raised hand dropped. The crackling power dissipated. He looked at Olev, then to the retreating shadows of his populace, visible through the *Iron Maw’s* entry point. And then, the impossible happened.
Vashak the Desolator, the supposedly terrifying warlord, dropped to one knee. His crown, a symbol of his dominion, tilted precariously on his head, threatening to fall.
“Necro-Thief,” he said, scraping a gauntlet against the flagstones. “Olev Rask. Take it.” He gestured to his crown. “Take my throne, my dominion, whatever you wish. Just… just hold the line. My people. The children… they haven’t made it to the last safe-rifts. Buy them time.”
Grigori, a perpetually annoyed skeleton, clattered out from behind Olev, tripping over a fallen piece of masonry. “He just… begged? The big bad Lord of the Pit just got on his knees for you, Boss. What’s next, an apology tour?”
Olev rubbed his chin, a faint, almost imperceptible tilt to his lips. “I appreciate the dramatic gesture, but I’m not really one for accessorizing. Crowns are awfully high-maintenance. What’s the catch?”
“No catch!” Vashak insisted, rising partially. “Only a plea. My domain is gutted. My legion is shattered. The Null-Maw… it consumes everything. I need time. Just a few more cycles for the remaining refugees to reach the final egress points. Your… your army… it is unlike anything I have ever witnessed. An unbreakable wall against oblivion.”
Yeva stepped forward, setting the butt of her rifle against the deck plate. She’d watched the panic rippling through the crowds below, the identical stampede that churned Ostrog-7's lower tiers. They weren't conquerors; they were running for their lives. Just like the humans.
“Olev,” she said, her voice level. “He’s right. These aren’t soldiers. They’re civilians. Scrambling. Disorganized. Just like the crater dregs back home.” She looked at Vashak. “How many more of your people are still out there?”
Vashak gestured stiffly with a shaking gauntlet. “Tens of thousands. Trying to reach the last dimensional anchors before… before it fully descends.”
“Tens of thousands of bodies,” Yeva mused, then looked at Olev. “Tens of thousands of potential… resources. If we can control their egress, funnel them into the *Iron Maw*’s lower decks, through the protected corridors… they’ll be contained. And they’ll be a distraction. More meat for the grinder. Or, at least, more cover.” She glanced at Olev, waiting on his ledger.
Olev considered it. He looked at the vast tear in the sky, at the desperate warlord, at Yeva's set jaw. “Fine,” he sighed, as if agreeing to an irritating errand. “A logistical nightmare, but I suppose we’re already in one. Open the hangar bays, Grigori. Let’s make ourselves a temporary refugee shelter. Tell them to bring their own snacks; I’m not running a soup kitchen.”
[ *EVENT: ‘HEROIC SAVIOR’ PROTOCOL INITIATED. UNEXPECTED ALTRUISTIC BEHAVIOR DETECTED.* ]
[ *PENALTY: DAMAGE REDIRECTION PROTOCOLS TEMPORARILY OFFLINE. ENJOY THE FULL SPECTRUM OF PAIN, CHAMPION.* ]
Olev blinked. “Are you kidding me?” He scowled at the flashing text. “It thinks this is altruistic? I’m just collecting… tactical assets!”
Yeva let out a short, incredulous laugh. “The System has a sense of irony, it seems. Or it’s just mad you’re not letting everything burn.”
As the *Iron Maw* slowly opened its main loading ramp, a chaotic torrent of horned broods began to scramble inside. They piled into the cavernous holds, a desperate, chittering mass, seeking refuge from the horror unfolding outside. Vashak exhaled, a ragged breath rattling behind his visor, then turned to marshal his remaining forces.
But it was too late. The tear in the sky split entirely, not just a fissure, but a chasm opening directly into the void. No longer geometric vessels, but a colossal, undulating entity, formless yet terrifyingly precise, began its descent. It was a cosmic parasite, a maw of pure negation, leaking anti-light and a silence that swallowed all sound.
Its first strike wasn't against the citadel, or the scattering broods, or even Olev. It was a casual, indifferent swipe, a ripple of void-energy expanding from its central mass. The *Iron Maw’s* exterior cameras, still online, transmitted the image to the main console. Olev watched, a flicker of something close to annoyance crossing his face, as his newly acquired thrall beast, the massive reanimated brute trailing the stern, was struck. The Leviathan, a creature of immense power, didn’t explode. It simply ceased to exist, its form disintegrating into a shower of non-particulate dust that vanished into the void, leaving behind nothing but an empty space where a monster once was.
