Chapter 6 of 10
A Scenic Drive to the Abyss

The armored bulk of the *Iron Maw* shuddered, a low vibration from its repurposed rift engine rattling the deck plates. Olev, perched on the command seat, tapped a skeletal finger against the grimy viewport. Outside, the landscape was a blur of fractured tectonic stone and pulsating muscle, smeared in bruised ochre and sulfurous green. The Titan rumbled over a particularly thick flesh-bridge, its massive legs sinking slightly into the gelatinous surface before finding purchase.
“See, Grigori? I told you this route would be scenic,” Olev drawled, not looking away from the view. “Much faster than waiting for the next dimensional bus service.”
Grigori, a collection of bleached bones and frayed ligaments slumped in the co-pilot’s chair, clacked his jaw. “*Faster for you. I’m just waiting for the next time I have to taste molten demon gut because you stub your toe.*”
Yeva, observing from the navigation console, pressed her lips into a thin line. The journey had been… disorienting. Olev treated the apocalypse like a particularly aggravating commute. He’d even rigged a primitive, crackling radio to play what he called “road trip classics” – a mangled synth-wave track that occasionally cut out to static and distorted screams. She watched his profile, the casual slouch, the way his eyes, usually flat, held a strange, almost bored focus. He was taking them to Hell, and he was treating it like a Sunday drive.

The Titan lurched violently. A shriek, like metal tearing through a thousand throats, reverberated off the hull. Outside, a creature of pure, coiling muscle and teeth, easily the size of a municipal building, had latched onto the *Iron Maw*'s flank. Its hide was an armor of basalt plates, its jaw lined with jagged vitreous teeth, and its eyes burned with cold white predation.
“Ah, a trench-beast,” Olev noted, his tone flat. “Been a while since I tangled with one of those. What do you say, Grigori? Feeling explosive today?”
Grigori’s skull swiveled. “*Absolutely not. I’ve absorbed enough of your lethal mishaps to last a lifetime, which I don’t even have.*”
“Nonsense. Think of it as… a strategic repositioning,” Olev said, already rummaging under his seat. He pulled out a fist-sized orb of dark iron, pulsing with a faint, malevolent light. “And a chance to explore new career paths. Internal demolition, perhaps?”
Yeva, who had drawn her heavy-caliber energy rifle, stared. “Olev, what are you–”
Before she could finish, Olev grabbed Grigori by a ribcage. The skeleton yelped, a hollow, rattling sound. With practiced ease, Olev wrapped the explosive orb in the tattered remains of Grigori’s cloak, then, with a casual flick of his wrist, hurled his first undead servant out of a rapidly opening maintenance hatch.
“*YOU BASTARD!*” Grigori’s fading shriek was promptly swallowed by the Leviathan’s guttural roar as it snapped him out of the air. The colossal beast swallowed Grigori whole, its massive throat distending visibly.
Olev whistled softly. “Well, that was convenient.”
A second later, violet fire ruptured the beast's belly. The neck cracked backward, scales blowing out like shrapnel, and the mountain of flesh slipped from the hull into the trench below.
Yeva tracked the empty space along the trench edge. “You fed your infantryman to an apex dreadnought with a bomb stuffed in his ribs.” Her voice was flat, disbelief warring with a strange, dark amusement.
““Cuts down on ammunition costs,” Olev said. He lifted one hand, pale necrotic vapor curling off his knuckles. “Now for the encore.”

Two threads of bilious green snapped from Olev’s hand. One plunged into the abyss, latching onto the falling carcass; the other recoiled onto the deck plates, assembling a rattling ribcage and skull.
“*Olev Rask, when I get my bony hands on you, I will make you eat every single one of your precious necrotic dust bunnies!*” Grigori screeched, his jaw clacking furiously, bits of shredded organ meat still clinging to his ribs. “*I had just settled down for a nice, long rest! And that thing’s stomach acid! It’s still burning!*”
“Details, details,” Olev waved a dismissive hand. “You’re fine. Look on the bright side, you got a firsthand view of internal organ structures. Educational.”
Below, the reanimated colossus hauled itself out of the canyon fog, tallow-colored light burning in its empty eye sockets. It matched the crawler's pace, swimming through the ash cloud like an obedient hound.
Yeva holstered her rifle. Her gaze drifted from the resurrected Leviathan to Grigori, then finally settled on Olev.
“Alright, scraper,” Yeva said, stepping forward, her grip firm on her rifle harness. “New arrangement. Your corpses take point under my fire-lanes. You keep reanimating; I direct the perimeter.” She pointed a decisive finger at the viewport. “We’re not just crashing the gate; we’re carving a path through whatever Hell Vashak’s thrown at us. And if his minions are anything like *that*,” she gestured to the obedient Leviathan swimming below, “we’ll need to hit harder, faster, and with absolute righteous fury.”
Olev raised an eyebrow, a flicker of genuine surprise crossing his face. Then, a slow, predatory smile spread across his lips. “Consider it done, Vanguard. Just don’t complain when the ‘righteous fury’ involves a lot of exploding bone shrapnel.”

The *Iron Maw*, flanked by the lumbering carcass, battered across the final sinew bridge. Ahead, a jagged citadel rose into the bruised ash—a fortress carved from volcanic glass and black meat, ringed with needle-thin spires.
They expected resistance. They braced for the inevitable storm of Abyssal horrors. Instead, as the *Iron Maw* ripped through the outer gate, tearing it from its hinges with a sickening crunch, they were met with… chaos. Not the chaos of battle, but of desperate, disorganized flight. Demonic soldiers, hulking creatures of horn and sinew, were scrambling, not to defend, but to pack glowing dimensional crystals, to board strange, insectoid vessels, to flee through hastily opened rifts. Supplies were abandoned, weapons discarded. It was a mass exodus.
“They’re breaking ranks,” Yeva muttered, lowering her sights. “The garrison isn't even mounting a defense.”
Olev squinted down at the courtyard. “Fleeing from us? Unlikely. My collection usually draws mortars, not packing crates.”

The air inside the Abyssal stronghold shimmered. One moment, a squad of sprinting demons was on solid ground; the next, they were screaming, their forms stretched and distorted as they were flung upwards into the ash-choked sky, their bodies tearing apart mid-flight. The very ground buckled, not from an earthquake, but from a sickening lurch of physics. Pillars of black glass shattered into airborne grit, dragged skyward by a deepening spatial fracture. A tear cleaved the purple clouds, rimmed in greasy, iridescent grease. Through it, a fleet of impossibly geometric vessels, like shards of shattered nightmares, began to descend. They were silent, terrifyingly precise, and undeniably alien.
“They weren't routing because of us,” Yeva said, tracking the descent of the lead vessel. “They were fleeing this.”
