Chapter 2: Malfoy's Gaze, Unspoken Terms

A searing pain still throbbed in Venus’s left forearm. The Dark Mark felt like a brand of shame, a permanent scar on her very soul. Just moments ago, Voldemort's words had echoed in the cold, opulent drawing-room: *"You will marry Draco Malfoy. You will bear an heir."* Her stomach churned. The world tilted. She stared at the floor, seeing nothing, hearing only the roar of blood in her ears. Her future, once her own to dream, was now a blueprint for the Dark Lord's twisted legacy. Cold fury solidified in her gut. She would not be a broodmare. She would not be a tool. But the words died in her throat, trapped by the suffocating weight of his power. --- House-elves scurried. Their frantic movements filled the grand hallways of Malfoy Manor. Silver platters gleamed under floating candles. The air thickened with the scent of roasted pheasant and expensive wines. Lucius Malfoy's booming voice directed them, his face flushed with an unfamiliar excitement. Tonight, he would announce the engagement. The wedding would follow next month. Every detail, every moment, decided for her. Venus moved like a phantom through the preparations. Her own chamber, now adorned with new, extravagant silks and dark, luxurious furniture, felt more like a gilded cage than a sanctuary. She traced the intricate patterns on a heavy velvet curtain, her fingers numb. Hours later, a servant, trembling, guided her to the dining hall. The heavy oak doors swung open, revealing a scene of chilling grandeur. A long, polished table stretched across the room, already laden with food. Death Eaters, cloaked and menacing, filled the seats. Voldemort sat at the head, a chilling smile playing on his lips. His crimson eyes scanned the room, landing on her. A shiver ran down her spine. His gaze felt like a physical touch, invasive and possessive. Slowly, she approached her designated seat. It was next to Narcissa Malfoy, directly across from Draco. Her breath caught in her throat. Draco watched her. His silver eyes, usually so expressive, were now unreadable, a cold, hard veneer. His jaw was tight. He didn't smile. He didn't frown. Just watched, like a predator assessing its prey. Every step felt heavy. Her heart pounded against her ribs. She was walking towards her doom, and everyone here was a witness, a conspirator, or both. Taking her seat, she avoided his gaze. Instead, she focused on a crystal goblet, its facets catching the candlelight. The glass felt cold against her fingertips, a welcome contrast to the burning in her chest. Murmurs filled the room. The clinking of cutlery, the low hum of conversation. Each sound felt amplified, a discordant chorus celebrating her demise. She felt every eye on her, a collective weight pressing her down. Eventually, Voldemort raised a hand. Silence fell, instant and absolute. Even the house-elves froze, bowls of soup suspended mid-air. "Tonight," Voldemort's voice resonated, smooth and deadly, "we celebrate a union. A powerful alliance that will strengthen our cause, and secure our future." He paused, his eyes sweeping across the table, lingering on Venus, then on Draco. A cold smile spread across his face, not reaching his eyes. "Venus Yaxley and Draco Malfoy will be joined in marriage." A collective gasp, quickly suppressed, rippled through the room. Some of the Death Eaters exchanged surprised glances. Others merely nodded, their faces grim. Venus's knuckles whitened as she gripped the edge of the table. Her stomach churned again. It was real. This wasn't a nightmare. This was her life now. Lucius Malfoy rose, a proud, almost smug expression on his face. "Indeed, My Lord. Our families are honored. The wedding will take place next month, allowing for suitable preparations to be made." He raised his goblet, his voice booming. "To the future of the Malfoy and Yaxley lines! To a new era of power!" Cheers erupted, forced and hollow. Venus felt a wave of nausea. She couldn't bring herself to raise her own goblet. Her hand shook too much. Draco's gaze remained fixed on her. She finally met his eyes. There was no pity there. No anger. Just a profound, unsettling emptiness. It was as if he had already accepted their shared fate, the chains that bound them both. Her throat tightened. She wanted to scream, to lash out, to shatter the illusion of civility. But she was powerless. Her magic, potent and raw, was a weapon for her enemy, not a shield for herself. "A powerful heir," Voldemort added, his voice low, almost a purr. "One that will serve the Dark Lord with unwavering loyalty and exceptional magic." He watched Venus, a silent threat in his gaze. He expected her compliance. He expected her to produce a child, a weapon in his arsenal. Her autonomy had been stripped, her very body made a vessel for his ambition. She looked away, unable to bear the weight of his expectations. The food on her plate suddenly seemed repulsive. The rich aroma of the banquet turned her stomach. Later, as the feast continued, the conversations grew louder, fueled by wine and a perverse sense of celebration. Venus barely touched her food, instead nursing a single glass of water, trying to keep her composure. Narcissa Malfoy, seated beside her, offered a strained smile. "You look lovely, Venus. A beautiful bride-to-be." Her words felt like a cruel joke, yet her tone held a flicker of something akin to sympathy, quickly hidden. Venus offered a tight-lipped smile in return. She could feel Draco's eyes on her again. That unsettling, unwavering stare. It felt like a brand itself, burning into her skin. Many of the Death Eaters approached, offering congratulations that felt more like congratulations to Voldemort for securing another asset. Each handshake, each empty pleasantry, chipped away at her resolve. She was trapped. Trapped in this manor, trapped in this marriage, trapped in a life she never wanted. Her magic, a gift, was now a curse, binding her to the very evil she despised. Draco finally stood, glass in hand. His voice, usually laced with a sneer, was flat, devoid of emotion. He looked directly at Venus, his silver eyes cold and unreadable, as a predatory smirk touched his lips. "To our most… unconventional union. May it be fruitful."
