Searing heat consumed her left forearm. It spread like wildfire, not external, but burrowing deep beneath her skin, twisting nerves, igniting bone. Venus Yaxley bit down hard on her lip, tasting copper, a desperate attempt to suppress the cry building in her chest. Not now. Not here. She would not give him the satisfaction.
Cold sweat beaded on her forehead, trickling into her eyes. The ropes binding her to the obsidian chair dug into her wrists, a cruel mockery of the chains she felt on her soul. This was her sixteenth birthday, a day once imagined with joy, now etched in torment.
Shadows stretched long and distorted in the cavernous chamber. Dim light from flickering green flames cast an eerie glow on the faces surrounding her. Cloaked figures, silent and unmoving, watched with predatory interest. They reveled in her pain, a collective gasp of dark magic pressing down on her.
Eyes, red as fresh blood, pierced through the gloom. Lord Voldemort stood before her, a skeletal hand extended, a wand of yew and phoenix feather pointed at her exposed arm. His lips curved in a silent, chilling smile. No words were needed. His power filled the space, a suffocating presence that stole her breath.
Magic, raw and malevolent, pulsed from his wand. It seeped into her, a venomous ink spreading from the tip of his implement, burning a path across her flesh. She felt it, an unholy creation, taking root. The Dark Mark.
Pain. Unbearable, soul-shattering pain. It was more than physical; it was the agony of her future being ripped away, piece by agonizing piece. Her magic, once her solace, now felt corrupted, turning against her. A guttural scream tore from her throat, raw and involuntary, an animalistic sound that echoed off the stone walls.
Her body arched against the ropes, a futile struggle. Tears streamed down her face, not of weakness, but of fury. Fury at him, at the world, at herself for not being strong enough to escape. The Mark solidified, a permanent brand of ownership, twisting into a grotesque skull and serpent.
Breath hitched in her throat. Her arm throbbed, a constant, sickening beat that mirrored her shattered heart. The heat receded, leaving behind a cold, desolate ache. Her illusion of freedom, fragile as it had always been, shattered into a million irreparable fragments.
"Silence, girl," Voldemort's voice hissed, a dry whisper that carried unnatural weight. He lowered his wand, his gaze sweeping over her, an assessment of a newly acquired possession. "Such potential. Such defiance. Both will serve me well."
Movement rippled through the cloaked figures. One stepped forward, a tall, elegant man with pale hair and colder eyes. Lucius Malfoy. He offered a slight bow to the Dark Lord, then a sneer at Venus. Her heart plummeted further.
"The preparations are complete, My Lord," Lucius said, his voice smooth as silk. "The union can proceed as planned. Tonight."
Union. The word struck her with a fresh wave of dread. She knew what it meant. She had known for weeks, a dreadful certainty hanging over her like a guillotine. The arranged marriage. To Draco Malfoy. Her stomach churned.
Draco. His name tasted like ash. Once, it had been a whispered prayer, a secret wish held close to her heart. She remembered stolen glances in the Great Hall, the way his silver eyes would sometimes catch hers across the classroom. A childish fantasy, a hope for something pure and real.
Now, that fantasy was a nightmare. This wasn't the marriage she’d dreamed of, a union forged in love and mutual desire. This was a decree, a command to breed, to produce an heir for the Dark Lord's twisted legacy. A tool, nothing more.
Her gaze flickered to another cloaked figure, standing slightly apart from the others. He was taller, broader in the shoulders than Lucius. Even from a distance, the unmistakable shock of platinum blond hair was visible. Draco. He stood utterly still, a silent sentinel in the periphery, his face obscured by the deep hood.
Did he feel anything? Any shred of the connection she once thought they shared? Or was he as much a puppet as she was, albeit one with slightly more gilded strings? The thought made her want to scream again, but her throat was raw, her voice spent.
Voldemort turned his attention back to her, his red eyes gleaming. "You will marry Draco Malfoy. You will produce an heir. A child of immense magical power, loyal to my cause. Your magic, potent and raw, will be bound to this purpose."
Each word was a branding iron, searing another mark onto her spirit. Her magic. It had been a gift, a part of her very essence, capable of feats others only dreamed of. Now it was a cursed weapon, bent to a will not her own.
Would she become the monster they expected? The cold, ruthless Death Eater, devoid of feeling, serving the darkest evil? She looked down at the throbbing mark on her arm, a permanent stain. The fear of losing herself, of truly breaking, was more terrifying than the pain.
Malfoy Manor awaited, not a home, but a prison. A gilded cage where she would perform her duties, play her part, and slowly, irrevocably, lose herself. She pictured its imposing gates, the cold grandeur of its halls, each corner holding a new expectation, a new command.
Her hands clenched, even through the ropes. She would not break. Not completely. She would find a way. A way to reclaim the pieces of herself, to defy the destiny carved into her skin, even if it cost her everything.
The ritual chamber began to empty. The cloaked figures moved silently, melting back into the shadows they emerged from. Only Voldemort remained, his presence still a heavy weight in the air, his gaze fixed on her.
She met his stare, defiance flickering in her exhausted eyes. A futile gesture, perhaps, but one she desperately needed to make. She was Venus Yaxley. Not merely a vessel. Not merely a slave.
As the last tendrils of dark magic recede, a chillingly familiar voice echoes from the shadows, "Such potent magic, wasted on resistance. You will serve, Venus. Or you will break."
