Chapter 9 of 10

Crescendo of the Broken

909 words

Sirokh’s voice, a blade wrapped in velvet, sliced through the rising hum. “So, Velisra,” she repeated, her gaze locked, “what will it be? Stop Kavos and condemn these foolish nobles to oblivion? Or save them, and let Davri’s soul be erased, tone by tone, until nothing remains?” Velisra locked her stance, muscles coiled. Her gaze shifted from Kavos's poised baton to the writhing nobles, then settled on Davri. Crimson trickled from the corners of his deadened eyes where he had pushed his aural shields beyond rupture. The obsidian acoustic fork gripped in his fist pulsed with faint, voracious light. She didn’t have to choose. Not really. Not when *he* was the one at risk. Just as Velisra lunged, a sudden, impossible note erupted. Not from Kavos, not from the screaming crowd, but from Davri. He moved. With a roar that tore his vocal cords, he launched himself from the gallery railing, a blind meteor of rage, landing with sickening force on the edge of the grand stage. The dark metal prongs clanged against the marble. His head snapped back, temple veins bulging blue against pale skin. Crimson ran from his mouth and ears, slicking his throat. His lips peeled back into a snarl, exposing red-stained teeth. And then, he sang. It wasn't a melody. It was a raw, guttural cry, a sound so primal it seemed to peel the air itself. A torrent of counter-harmonics, sharpened by his rage and the resonant metal's dark pitch, tore out from him. The pitch struck Kavos like a wall of shearing blades. The prince screamed, a high, thin sound of pure terror. His gilded baton sheared into shimmering grit that dissolved in midair. With a wet crunch, Kavos’s forearms ruptured under the pressure. Muscle and bone splintered outward as if caught in a centrifugal mill, leaving torn stumps that pumped arterial red across the marble. The prince collapsed onto the dais, writhing silently. Panic tore through the hall. But the destructive cadence Davri released had not burned out. The surrounding air shuddered violently, charged with unstable pitch. He stood like a living warhead, hemorrhaging and unyielding. [RETRIBUTION DIRECTIVE: TARGET: SIROKH. WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY: OPEN. ELIMINATE THREAT.] Sirokh, momentarily stunned by Davri’s destructive outburst, began to compose, her expression a mix of shock and icy fury. The hum around her intensified, the pressure on Velisra’s ears spiking to unbearable levels. The Saintess’s symbol on her chest pulsed brighter, a harbinger of doom. “Not on my watch, witch!” Before Sirokh could finish shaping her command, Velisra sprang from the lower gallery. She tackled the double agent sideways, driving an elbow directly into the woman's ribs. Her hand darted into the folds of Sirokh's robes, ripping free the obsidian rod concealed there, and slammed the dual prongs against the saintess vessel's glowing breastplate. The bomb’s resonant field immediately flickered, stuttered. The overwhelming pressure in the hall wavered, a moment of precious reprieve. Sirokh shrieked, her concentration shattering under the bone-jarring feedback as the grounded metal deadened the lethal pulse. That was all Velisra needed. Pure, unadulterated fury surged through her. Sirokh had threatened Davri, had tried to take him away. That was an unforgivable sin. Velisra pivoted on her planted left foot, hips torquing with ruthless kickboxing precision. Her right heel whipped across the space and took Sirokh cleanly under the jaw with a dry, splintering crack. Sirokh spun half a rotation and crashed limp to the flagstones, the dampening rod skittering across the floorboards. Velisra whipped around, locating Davri instantly. He stood center stage amid a haze of sonorous heat. His sightless gaze locked precisely onto Kavos's twitching heap, tracking the prince by the ragged rhythm of his gasping breath. [RETRIBUTION DIRECTIVE: PHASE TWO INITIATED. UNLEASH THE CHORDS OF ANNIHILATION.] Davri’s bleeding lips curled into a smile devoid of warmth. “You taught me well, Velisra,” he rasped, his voice rough but clear, carrying over the panicked cries of the nobles. He raised his hands, not to a keyboard, not to a lyre, but to the very air. He hummed a low, ominous note, then another, layering them, pulling at the very fabric of the Citadel. The forbidden chords Velisra had forced into his hands, the ones of 'Lung-Rupture,' 'Bone-Grind,' and 'Stone-Shatter,' poured from him, given a terrifying, new life. The marble floor beneath the royal dais began to tremble. Hairline fractures spiderwebbed across the gilded pillars, extending outwards with horrifying speed. The high, vaulted ceilings groaned, dust raining down like ash. The oppressive, sound-dampening walls of the Chiming Citadel, built to imprison and control, started to buckle inwards. A massive slab of the north wall peeled away, crumbling into pulverized mortar that rained down on fleeing nobles. The humiliated royals, those who hadn't already fled, shrieked as their fortress began to dismantle itself around them. Davri, his chin painted in scarlet and sweat, projected a soaring chord that ripped through the gallery rafters. The entire Gala Hall pitched, a ship caught in a violent storm, its very foundations groaning under the assault. On the dais, Kavos dragged his mangled, spurting limbs across the stone, spite curdling on his features. Slumping forward, his bloody chin slammed down onto a concealed switch built into the dais trim. A low, grinding groan, far deeper than Davri’s composition, reverberated through the hall, a dreadful counterpoint to the collapse. The Citadel's central resonance core, the heart of its control, began to whine, winding up for a final, suicidal blast.
