Chapter 8 of 10

Gatecrashing the Gala

1.3k words

The klaxon’s shriek ripped through Velisra, a physical wrenching in her gut. She swore under her breath, the taste of blood still fresh from the vault escape. Davri’s words, heavy with both adoration and destructive intent, echoed in her mind. “No time for poetry, Davri,” she snapped, already moving, pulling him to his feet. "The Gala Hall sits on the highest tier, right above the Grand Atrium," Velisra recalled from her stolen architectural layouts. "The lower utility shafts feed directly beneath it. We cut through the Old Servants' Labyrinth and bypass the outer ring." “Fine. Labyrinth it is,” Velisra grunted. She shoved a crudely fashioned hilt, tipped with a jagged shard of reinforced resonance quartz, into Davri’s hand. “Can you use this?” Davri’s blind hand closed around the hilt, a faint hum vibrating through the mineral. His scarred face remained impassive, but a flicker of grim satisfaction touched his lips. “It will sing their last song,” he promised, a chilling edge to his tone. He then extended his other hand towards Velisra. “Your hand. Keep it close.” Velisra didn’t argue. She clasped his hand, feeling the subtle tremor of his power already building. The Retribution Directive’s crimson glow pulsed in her vision, a constant, irritating reminder of the ticking clock. [RETRIBUTION DIRECTIVE: VELISRA’S COMPLIANCE RATING: 67%. INITIATE HIGH-VALUE TARGET ENGAGEMENT. MAXIMUM VIOLENCE AUTHORIZED.] The Servants’ Labyrinth was a damp stone trench reeking of mold and stagnant oil. Velisra counted cross-junctions by memory, tracing grease marks on the pipes while Davri tracked the low vibrational hum of the central conduits. They emerged into a cramped service stairwell, the muffled strains of an orchestral overture filtering down from above. The sound was rich, powerful – the opening notes of Davri’s stolen 'Aetherial Unbinding' symphony. “He’s starting,” Davri rasped, a raw, strangled sound. His grip on Velisra’s hand tightened, almost painfully. “The first movement… that’s when it settles.” Velisra felt a fresh surge of fury. Settles? It would settle Davri’s essence into oblivion. She kicked open the access panel to the main ventilation shaft, the clang echoing louder than she intended. “No time for subtlety,” she snarled. “Davri, stay on my hip. I’m clearing a path.” The shaft opened into a dusty storage room directly above the Grand Gala Hall. Below them, through a narrow grating, the hall shimmered with a thousand candle-flares. Hundreds of nobility, bedecked in their finest sonic-woven robes, milled about, unaware. And there, on an elevated stage bathed in spotlights, stood Kavos. He wore a pristine white uniform, a smug sneer on his face, a conductor’s baton already clutched in his hand. Above him, a colossal resonance fixture, an iron-bound cluster of faceted mineral prisms, hung from thick, braided cables. “Davri, the cables,” Velisra pointed, her voice a low growl. “Can you hit them?” Davri’s head tilted, his blind eyes seeming to bore through the floor. A low hum started in his chest, growing in intensity, a deep, unsettling vibrato. The edge in his hand began to pulse with a faint, crimson light. With a sudden, explosive burst of power, he thrust the blade forward. A blast of concussive force, invisible and brutal, shot downwards. The braided cables snapped with a series of sharp *cracks*, like cannon fire. The massive chandelier, weighing tons, groaned, swayed, and then plummeted. Chaos erupted below. The chandelier smashed into the dais, sending a shower of vitreous shards and sparks across the stage. A shriek of terror tore through the hall. Kavos, caught off guard, stumbled back, his face a mask of shock and indignation. His elite honor guard, arrayed in their gleaming sonic-armor, were crushed beneath the falling wreckage, their bodies dissolving into shimmering dust as their protective enchantments failed. “Move!” Velisra yelled, kicking the grating open. She dropped to the marble floor, landing silently amidst the pandemonium. The air was thick with screams, the panicked murmurs of nobility, and the sudden, jarring halt of the orchestra. Velisra wasted no time. A royal dignitary, his elaborate sonic-shield flaring, lunged at her. She met him with a devastating front kick, shattering his shield and sending him sprawling, his opulent robes torn. Another tried to compose a binding chord, but Velisra spun, delivering a roundhouse kick that connected with his instrument-arm, snapping bone and silencing his attempt. A guard hauled himself up by a brass rail, coughing blood and shouting orders to seal the perimeter. “Then I’ll find the weak points!” Velisra retorted, ducking under a sonic-blast that tore a chunk from a marble pillar. She moved like a whirlwind, a blur of motion and raw power, her Earthly kickboxing techniques devastating against the rigid, sound-based combat of Zir-Nata. Each strike was precise, aimed at joints, pressure points, or the delicate sonic-amplifiers woven into their clothing. She wasn’t just incapacitating them; she was publicly dismantling their revered, magic-infused defenses with brute force, turning their sophisticated art into a mockery. Davri, guided by Velisra’s touch and his own heightened senses, moved with a terrifying grace. The acoustic blade hummed incessantly, a low, predatory growl. Any noble who tried to get too close to Velisra found themselves suddenly gasping, their windpipes constricting, or their intricate sound-weaves unraveling into useless threads. His strikes drove straight through their counter-notes, proving his vow: *every note I compose from now on will cut.* Kavos, now surrounded by a smaller, but still formidable, contingent of uninjured guards, finally regained his composure. His eyes, though still furious, held a spark of wicked amusement as he recognized Velisra. “Sirokh, you truly are a creature of chaos,” he called out, his voice carrying above the din. “But this performance is mine!” He leveled his stolen baton again, intending to resume the symphony, the first note a hair’s breadth from striking. “Not on my watch, you glorified thief!” Velisra roared, launching herself towards the dais. But just as she cleared a path through the last desperate nobles, a figure stepped in front of her, blocking her charge. It was Sirokh, wearing the Saintess’s shimmering robes, her face serene, almost beatific, but her eyes held a cold, calculating malice. “Velisra,” Sirokh purred, her voice carrying an unnerving clarity amidst the cacophony. “Always so predictable. Always choosing the direct path.” She lifted her hands, a faint, almost imperceptible hum emanating from her chest, a low, ominous thrum that made the floorplates shake. “But you forget, darling. This vessel is not merely a pretty face.” Velisra stopped dead, a sudden, chilling dread seizing her. The hum grew, a deep, unsettling *vroom* that felt like it was originating from her own bones. Sirokh smiled, a horrifying, triumphant grin. “It’s been rigged, Velisra. A fail-safe. A resonance bomb, calibrated to my heart’s own rhythm. If my pulse drops below a certain rate, or if this vessel is… compromised…” She gestured vaguely at her chest, where the Saintess’s emblem pulsed faintly. “The entire Gala Hall, and a good portion of the Chiming Citadel with it, will implode. Hundreds of lives, including your precious Davri, will simply… cease to be.” The hum intensified, a physical pressure against Velisra’s eardrums. Courtiers tumbled against the banisters, struggling to breathe and clawing at their ears. Davri, his face contorted in pain, faltered, his weapon's edge flickering wildly. Kavos, surprisingly, also looked startled, his raised baton wavering. Sirokh’s gaze, however, remained fixed on Velisra, a cruel glint in her eyes. “So, Velisra,” Sirokh said, her voice dropping to a whisper that cut through the noise, “what will it be? Stop Kavos and condemn these foolish nobles to oblivion? Or save them, and let Davri’s soul be erased, frequency by frequency, until nothing remains?”
