Firewall Flambe

The coordinates flared behind Jurot’s eyes, an etched schematic traced by the burrowing data-worm. Quadrant Alpha-7, Sub-level Omega. The Zenith Core. Citra caught the sudden hitch in his stride and clamped a hand on his forearm. "Rendra's down there," she said, breath hard against her teeth. "He expects us." Jurot gave a tight jerk of his chin, already tracing descent shafts and blast angles. Behind them, Okar's retinue sprawled across the marble in ruin, but victory meant nothing with the clock running down. He bolted, boots biting into polished stone, plunging past frozen servants into maintenance conduits heavy with ozone and machine grease. Sub-level Omega opened like a hollowed-out continent under the foundation, vast bulkheads throbbing with system traffic. In the basin stood a crystalline conduit spire, its ribs glowing dull violet toward the dark rafters. A hundred heavy enforcers barred the approach, standing locked together with carbines raised around the base. Each breastplate bore the stylized, unblinking eye of the Cortex guard. "The inner circle," Citra muttered, fingers poised above her energy hilt, which hummed with the tainted blue residue of the cooked core. [PRIME DIRECTIVE: UNLAWFUL ENTRY DETECTED. RETRIBUTION PROTOCOL ENGAGED.] The glyphs flashed cold cobalt and dissolved. Before the line could step forward, Citra tapped the stolen officer's datapad strapped to her wrist, patching into the chamber's open broadcast relays. Across the cavern, on every available surface, faint projections flickered to life. These weren’t entertainment streams. They were raw, unedited data logs. Audio logs, telemetry dumps, and decrypted dispatch orders flooded the air—her unit's black-box feed. On the nearest wall projection, Rendra's face hardened into light, his recorded voice dry and measured: "...Citra Vaneshi’s squad will serve as a necessary diversion. Their sacrifice is acceptable. The ‘Rebirth Protocol’ requires absolute discretion." Muffled shouts broke down the line. A second pane opened, showing a tactical grid: Citra's unit trapped in an airlock breach, their distress beacons scrubbed by Rendra's personal encryption key, followed by sensor telemetry of the automated execution drone his authorization had deployed. A veteran officer with three gold service pips stepped out of formation, his heavy barrel dropping an inch. "That authorization hash... Rendra logged that order himself?" Citra cranked the pad's audio gain until it rattled the bulkheads. "He fed my unit to the slaughter to calibrate his metrics. He watches you bleed, checks the telemetry, and files it away. How many squads has he written off under that purge order?" A front-rank gunner pulled off her visor, skin drained of color. "My brother was in that deployment." [PRIME DIRECTIVE: FACTION ALLEGIANCE CRITICAL. UNORTHODOX BIAS DETECTED.] [PRIME DIRECTIVE: HOTFIX APPLIED. LOYALTY PROTOCOL RENUMERATED.] The veteran officer racked his slide, pivoting toward his own command staff. "Traitors to the district! Stand down or be purged!" The line tore in half. Red boltfire cracked through the basin, burning into composite armor and slamming into kinetic barriers. Men who had stood side by side seconds earlier crashed into one another with monomolecular blades and close-range bursts, the perimeter disintegrating into crossfire. Jurot didn’t wait. He plunged into the fray, his titanium claws ripping through armor, his wok deflecting stray shots. Citra's weapon hissed as it severed gun barrels and knee joints in tight, surgical arcs. They cut inward along the perimeter, the rebel squad members holding back fire to let them cross into the inner ring. They reached the Nexus gate, a shimmering wall of light. Just as Jurot raised a claw, a voice echoed from within, calm and resonant. “Clever, Citra. But predictable.” The glare thickened into a translucent pane. Rendra stepped through the aperture, the gentle crinkle around his eyes entirely disconnected from the flat, dead stare behind them. "You think in grievances, child. The Grid demands systemic pruning. Total renewal." He lifted one palm, and the barrier around him hardened into a blinding cage of light. [PRIME DIRECTIVE: ARCHITECT R. SHIELD PROTOCOL: ‘FIREWALL FLAMBE’ ACTIVATED.] [PRIME DIRECTIVE: TARGET: ARCHITECT R. INVULNERABILITY: 99.99%.] Jurot drove his claws forward, striking the translucent skin. The blow jarringly stopped dead, shockwaves ringing up his forearms as if hitting an unyielding bank of hardened alloy, leaving not a smudge. Citra slashed down with her supercharged hilt; the edge flared orange and went dead, its charge siphoned into the translucent wall. Rendra watched without blinking. "This barrier is not standard defense netting," Rendra said through the din of gunfire behind them. "It draws authority directly from root processing. No registered gear, no class skill, no recognized parameter within the Grid can breach it. Every known variance has been mapped." Jurot battered the barrier with rapid hammer-fists, iron claws scraping fruitless sparks across the plane. Nothing gave. Above them, the systemic purge timers were running down, threatening Sector Four and everyone inside it. Heat surged behind his temples, but he ground his molars together, choking down the fury until his thoughts ran sharp and cold. *No registered parameter. No recognized variance.* He stepped back, cataloging his assets. The claws. The heavy iron pan. The predatory density of the Ravener, the null-footprint of the rodent, the target-lock of the drone, the distortion field of the aberrant entity, and the predatory worm taken from Okar's neck. Five consumed essences, none of them cataloged in the System's combat ledger. Not standard bugs, but unprocessed culinary extraction. He pulled all five streams inward, ramming the incompatible currents down his arm into the cast-iron rim. The black metal shivered, its seasoning cracking as raw rainbow discharge pooled in the basin. Jurot brought the pan around in a full-body rotational slam. The iron struck the translucent field with the concussive crack of a railgun firing inside a vault. The barrier screeched like torn sheet metal, fractured into spiderwebs of dead pixels, and blew outward in a shower of glass-sharp sparks. Acrid vapor rolled through the crater. Jurot recovered his footing, chest heaving over the hissing pan, his deltoid aching from the violent recoil. The defensive screen was obliterated. As the haze thinned, Rendra remained upright, his calm expression unmoving as his synthetic skin charred and flaked away like singed rice paper, baring not sinew or marrow, but an intricate, hostile scaffolding of root-level blue circuitry.
