Just Desserts

Jurot ignored Okar's sputtering, his gaze locked on the blue text still burning in the air. Citra, a beacon of renewed power, was already moving, her movements sharper, faster. The air around her crackled with a faint, almost musical static. Her new form, a vibrant defiance of the System's decree, was a raw, dangerous spectacle. [SERVER WIPE INITIATED. SECTOR FOUR DELETION IN 2 HOURS.] “Two hours,” Jurot said, his cadence flat and clipped. “Two hours until our district, until *everyone*, is gone.” Citra’s head snapped towards the Prime Directive’s message. Her previous shock morphed into a fierce resolve. “Rendra. He’s cutting his losses.” She spun, her eyes flashing amber, fixing on Okar and his stunned sentries. “We have to stop him. Now.” “The Zenith Core,” Jurot stated, his voice a low growl. “Rendra’s personal access key. He always carries it, a bio-locked data-port in his comm-pad, a symbol of his petty power. Without it, he can’t initiate the full deletion sequence. It’s a failsafe he never thought anyone would reach.” Okar, still gaping, finally found his voice. “You… you think you can simply waltz into the Zenith Ascendancy and steal the Magistrate’s personal data-key? Delusional! Even if you survive *me*, there are a thousand combatants out there ready to tear you apart.” He gestured wildly at the remaining retainers, who, though wary of Citra's transformation, began to raise their rifles. Citra merely extended a hand, a focused pulse of golden light erupting from her palm. The nearest sentry's plasma carbine disintegrated into dust, its molecular housing shattered. A second pulse slammed Okar back against the vault wall, stunning him into silence. “We’re not waltzing in,” Jurot said, his eyes narrowed. “I’m catering.” Citra looked at him, a faint, dangerous smile playing on her lips. “A banquet? Okar’s victory celebration for ‘neutralizing’ you?” “Precisely,” Jurot replied, a cold glint in his eyes. “He announced it during the qualifiers. A public display of his triumph. Tonight, in the Grand Hall. He’ll be surrounded by his cronies, arrogant and bloated. Perfect targets for a special dish.” They moved fast. Using the hidden subway lines Jurot had mapped out over years of scavenging, they reached the service entrance of the Grand Hall, a cavernous space at the heart of the Megablocks. Citra used her newly acquired abilities to jam the security feeds for a precious few minutes, allowing Jurot to slip inside, his scrapper’s rags exchanged for a crisp, if ill-fitting, caterer’s uniform. He wore a neutral expression, practiced from a lifetime of invisibility. The hall was a glittering cage of wealth and power. Towering synth-sculptures depicted heroic combatants, plasma light reflecting off polished chrome. The air hung thick with the scent of manufactured luxury and the murmurs of self-congratulatory elites. Okar, resplendent in a ceremonial robe of deep crimson and gold, held court at the head table, surrounded by a dozen of his most decorated Vanguard generals and wealthy patrons, their combat armor gleaming under the soft, diffused light. Jurot scanned the room, his enhanced Chef senses picking up every nuanced aroma, every faint tremor in the air. He located the kitchen and moved with purpose, blending seamlessly with the low-caste service staff. He found a cart laden with pre-prepared dishes, a massive slab of synth-boar roasting on a spit. Perfect. Working quickly, his hands a blur, Jurot sliced generous portions of the synth-boar. He extracted a small, pulsating shard from a hidden pouch – a piece of the cooked Anomaly core he’d fed to Citra, carefully preserved. He finely ground the shard into a shimmering powder, its faint golden light almost imperceptible against the rich, dark meat. He laced the gravy, then dusted the boar with the glitched data, ensuring every bite would carry his 'special' ingredient. The scent of the roast, usually bland and artificial, now held a subtle complexity and a metallic tang. “Prime dish coming through!” he called out, his voice a practiced, subservient drone. He pushed the cart through the throng of diners, his eyes fixed on Okar’s table. He served each general with a polite, almost reverent nod, saving the largest portion for Okar himself. “Ah, the chef’s special!” Okar boomed, his voice echoing across the chamber. He took a massive bite, chewing with gusto. His cronies followed suit, their faces alight with gluttonous pleasure. “A surprisingly robust flavor for synth-meat. You’ve outdone yourselves, kitchen staff!” Then, it began. The first general, a hulking brute named Commander Varkos, coughed. His face contorted. His intricately etched combat gauntlets, gleaming seconds before, began to crackle. Blue fissures spread across their surface, like spiderwebs of corruption. Then, with a sound like shattering glass, the gauntlets disintegrated, exposing his soft, fleshy hands. A gasp rippled through the table. Okar froze, a half-chewed piece of boar still in his mouth. Then, his own ceremonial breastplate, a masterpiece of defensive plating, began to fizz. The golden filigree peeled away, the crimson surface bubbled, and the entire structure collapsed inwards, dissolving into a pile of inert, grey dust. His elite cronies, one after another, watched in horror as their vaunted combat gear, their very symbols of status and power, dissolved into nothingness, leaving them exposed in their flimsy banquet attire. Several screamed, clutching at their suddenly bare arms and chests. “What is this sorcery?!” Okar shrieked, scrambling back from the table, his face ashen. He fumbled for a comm-unit, his eyes wide with a terror Jurot had never seen on him before. “Enforcers! Seize this… this *cook*! He’s sabotaged the food!” The hall erupted into chaos. Elite combatants, stripped of their armor, were vulnerable. Their personal escorts hesitated, unsure how to shield superiors who had lost their defensive plating. Jurot merely stood by the table, a bland smile on his face, watching Okar thrash. The synthetic grease from the boar, rendered down to a thin, almost invisible film, coated the highly polished floor around the table. Okar, still screaming for his enforcers, made a desperate lunge away from Jurot, his ornate slippers sliding across the slick surface. His legs flew out from under him, and he landed with a comical, undignified splat, his face buried in a puddle of congealed boar fat and dissolved armor particles. He scrambled to get up, his usually arrogant features twisted into a grotesque mask of fear and humiliation. “Please! Don’t touch me! I’m Magistrate Okar! I command this sector!” he wailed, his voice cracking, completely broken. “I’ll give you anything! Credits! Status! Just… just don’t hurt me!” Jurot stepped over the scattered remnants of elite armor, his shadow falling over the pathetic figure. He knelt, his expression cold as the void. “Anything, you say?” he murmured, his voice a low, dangerous whisper. He reached out, his fingers surprisingly gentle as they latched onto the bio-port on Okar’s wrist – a small, almost invisible slot that housed the access key. Okar’s pleas died in his throat. His eyes, full of tears and snot, were fixed on Jurot’s face, searching for mercy where there was only an unforgiving resolve. With a practiced twist, Jurot extracted the small, crystalline sliver from the bio-port. It was not a solid key, as he had expected. Instead, it pulsed with a soft, internal luminescence, like a trapped, sentient ember. As Jurot held it, it began to writhe, elongating, then rapidly shrinking, taking on the shape of a minuscule, opalescent worm. It vibrated with a faint hum, an almost imperceptible song of data and code. Before Jurot could react, it sprang from his fingers, burrowing into the skin of his palm, vanishing as if it had never been there. A sharp sting spiked through his arm. Then, a cold, clear voice, alien yet familiar, echoed in his mind, not heard, but *felt*. *”Sector Four… Zenith Core… Rendra’s Nexus: Quadrant Alpha-7, Sub-level Omega…”*
