Zian Krol, the Thousand-Cauldron Sovereign of a world he once commanded, now finds himself powerless and bleeding out in a rain-slicked alley in the neon-drenched metropolis of Volkov. His pursuers aren't rival cultivators, but creatures of nightmare - vampires - who hunt in the concrete jungle. Thrown into a world devoid of the familiar spiritual energies he mastered, Zian discovers that Earth's 'qi' is trapped deep underground in petrified veins, accessible only by those who spill blood on the metal that forms the city's bones. Aided by Lena Novak, a driven detective investigating a string of occult exsanguinations, Zian begins to rebuild his alchemical arts with modern chemistry and ancient secrets. He concocts potent serums from urban decay and stolen blood, all to fuel his desperate quest home. But the deeper he delves into this world's shadows, the more he suspects his arrival was not an accident. Why do the creatures of this world recognize the symbols of his old sect, and what truth lies behind the 'rules' of his supposed exile?
