Chapter 8 of 10

The Flambé Strike

832 words

The gargantuan maw of the Megalodon-Wyrm, a cavern of dark, slick flesh and teeth like sharpened meteorites, hung open, radiating a heat that made the rusted plating of the artillery tank hull groan. Inside, its glowing viscera pulsed, an exposed, fleshy bullseye. “No, Drusya!” Ignat shrieked, his voice cracking, spluttering blood onto his pristine chef’s whites. He pushed off the mangled wreckage of a fallen servo-arm, staggering towards the two vats of bubbling, crimson stew. “You can’t. I… I love you, you lazy, magnificent beast-slayer! Let me do it! I’m just a dishwasher, my life is expendable!” Drusya, still rubbing the back of her head, gave him a flat, unimpressed look. “Ignat, do you have any idea how hard it is to find a good dishwasher? Especially one who can actually discern the subtle nuances of umami in post-apocalyptic algae paste? Absolutely not.” With a surprisingly gentle but firm shove, she sent him stumbling into Commander Petrovic’s bewildered arms. “But Commander! She’s… she’s going to—” Ignat protested, flailing. Petrovic, clutching his bowl of rapidly cooling stew, merely grunted. “She’s the Apex. She does what needs doing. And that stew smells *divine*.” Drusya didn’t wait. She moved with a speed that defied her usual languor, a blur of motion that even Ignat’s chef-trained eyes struggled to follow. She snatched a repurposed mech-leg from a pile of scrap, jamming it under the closest vat, transforming it into a crude, wheeled battering ram. The boiling liquid sloshed, venting a blast of spiced steam that made the creature's eyes roll back in its head with pure, unadulterated yearning. “Petrovic! The ramp!” she barked, already bracing herself against the vat. The Commander, still cradling his stew, instinctively kicked down the last remaining section of the diner’s reinforced blast door, creating a makeshift incline. With a grunt of effort, Drusya launched herself forward, pushing the vat. The repurposed mech-leg squealed against the pitted concrete as the heavy container gathered momentum, a runaway train of culinary destruction. The beast’s maw widened further, its gullet glowing with anticipation, the air around it shimmering with a heat that threatened to melt steel. “Hold on, you delicious leviathan!” Drusya yelled, her voice oddly cheerful, as the vat careened off the improvised ramp. She rode behind it, balanced on the bucking axle, her silhouette framed against the cavernous throat. The vat slammed into the roof of the beast’s mouth with a sickening crunch. The boiling, hyper-spicy stew, infused with Ignat’s meticulously hoarded hydroponic herbs, erupted in a violent geyser of crimson. It coated the unarmored tissue, the pulsating tastebuds, the glistening pink walls of the brute's throat, bathing the Megalodon-Wyrm in pure gastronomic ecstasy. The beast froze. Its compound eyes glazed over, fixed on some unseen culinary nirvana. A shudder rippled through its body, not of pain, but of overwhelming, exquisite pleasure. Its massive frame, which had been poised to devour the very world, went rigid, paralyzed by the sheer, overwhelming balance of the spice, the savory depth, the heat that blossomed across its deep palate. Then, the boiling broth, amplified by the creature's own searing body heat, did its work. A low, rumbling groan began deep within its gullet, not of hunger, but of volcanic chemical reaction. The Gourmand’s Leviathan began to glow from within, a beacon of delicious, self-immolating glory. A muffled *THWOMP* echoed through the crater, followed by a series of cracks like a thousand thunderbolts. The beast’s gargantuan body buckled, its legs giving out. It keeled over, a mountain of braised flesh, crashing into the dirt with an impact that vibrated through the entire settlement. Dust and pulverized rebar erupted in a choking cloud, momentarily obscuring everything. Ignat, released from Petrovic’s grip, stumbled forward, coughing. “Drusya? Drusya! Did she… did she really just… *flambé* a city-destroying monster from the inside out?” Petrovic, wiping soot from his face, lowered his stew bowl. “I… I think she did. And now I’m famished. That smell…” The dust began to settle. A figure emerged from the beast’s colossal mouth, striding out casually as if from a particularly cozy armchair. Drusya, looking thoroughly put out by the exertion, held a large, crisply seared slab of meat, glistening with juices. It was a section of its internal musculature, cooked to a flawless medium-rare, exuding an aroma that made the air itself taste like victory. She took a bite, chewing slowly, a look of profound satisfaction spreading across her face. “Hmm. Not bad. Melts right in the mouth. Just how I like it.” As the last of the smoke dispersed, revealing the perfectly rendered carcass of the Titan-Beast, Drusya looked up. Her eyes, still half-lidded with post-meal contentment, twitched in annoyance. Standing at the edge of Sector Null, beyond the ruined perimeter, was not just Petrovic’s small military detachment. The entire, impeccably dressed upper-level military elite, led by General Volkov himself, stood there, a phalanx of stern faces, all of them sniffing the air, their expressions a mix of awe, horror, and barely concealed, ravenous hunger.
