Chapter 7 of 10

The Secret Ingredient is Treason

The world exploded in a bass-heavy *WHUMMMP*. The Megalodon-Wyrm’s breath weapon didn’t ignite; it pressurized, a concussive force that tore through the air. The counter, the pots, the entire artillery tank hull vibrated with an ear-splitting hum, threatening to shatter every rivet. Drusya, still reeling from the gut-churning gulp of the beast, felt the air rip around her. The muzzle piece was gone, devoured. Now, a wall of pure, vibrating sound hit her, knocking her back like a flung rag doll. Her head smacked against the reinforced steel bulkhead with a sickening *clang*, and the world dissolved into a kaleidoscope of sparks and static. Then, darkness. Not a void, but a sudden, unwanted clarity. A forgotten scene, crisp and cold as winter wind, unfurled behind her eyes. She was younger, sharper, her movements economical and deadly. She stood in a sterile, chrome-lined chamber, the air thick with the scent of ozone and synthetic disinfectant. Before her, a holographic projection shimmered, showing a rudimentary cluster of crude shacks nestled in a distant, crumbling valley. Beside the projection, three figures in crisp, grey uniforms with the insignia of the *Komitet* – the Enclave’s shadowy ruling council – watched her with calculating eyes. “Apex Hunter Vaneva,” the central figure, a gaunt woman with hair pulled back in a severe knot, began, her voice like grinding ice. “Your legendary talent for attracting, then eliminating, the irradiated fauna of the Periphery is, shall we say, unparalleled.” Drusya, even in the vision, felt a familiar weariness. “Just tell me what you need, Komitet Leader Zoryana. I have a nap scheduled for 14:00.” Zoryana’s lips thinned. “We require a… demonstration. A large one. The settlement of Vorlag-9 has become… problematic. Their resource allocation is inefficient. Their loyalty, questionable.” She gestured to the shimmering valley. “We have calculated the precise caloric output of your ‘Apex Gravy’ – a truly exceptional bait, we must admit. If deployed strategically, it could draw a colossal predator. A cleansing wave, if you will.” Drusya felt an icy knot tighten in her belly, even in the dream. “You want me to cook something so delicious it lures a Titan-Beast… into a human outpost?” The words tasted like ash. Her legendary hunting prowess was meant to protect, to feed, to ensure the *enclave’s* survival, not to be weaponized against its own. “A necessary culling, Hunter Vaneva,” Zoryana replied, her eyes devoid of warmth. “To maintain order. To demonstrate the consequences of dissent. Your cooking, Vaneva, is a force of nature. We merely wish to point it in the correct direction.” Drusya had looked at the holographic settlement, then at the faces of the ruling council. A profound disgust, deeper than any hunger or fatigue, had bloomed in her. Her skills, her gift, twisted into a tool of destruction against innocent people. The thought had been unbearable. *This* was the life she was meant to protect? *This* was the purpose of her power? No. She would rather forget it all. Erase every trace of what she was, what she could do, than become an instrument of such cold-blooded cruelty. The static crackled, the recollection fractured, and Drusya’s eyes snapped open. She lay sprawled on the grimy floor of The Rusty Skewer, her head throbbing. Ignat, pale and clutching his side, was trying to reach her, his face a mask of concern. Petrovic was slumped against a stack of crates, coughing, his usually immaculate uniform now singed and torn. The Megalodon-Wyrm, its compound eyes still blazing white, had retreated slightly, its massive maw gaping open, a deep, resonating hum emanating from its throat as it recharged. It was preparing to fire again, this time at point-blank range. “Drusya! Are you alright?” Ignat scrambled towards her, ignoring his own pain. She pushed herself up, rubbing the knot on her head. The flashback, the disgust, still churned inside her. The Komitet. Vorlag-9. They had wanted her to use her cooking as a weapon. Not for sustenance, not for survival, but for political cleansing. With searing clarity, she understood. Brute force wouldn't work on *this* beast. Not if it was truly the ‘Gourmand’s Leviathan,’ a creature designed to be a walking maw. It wasn’t about killing it with explosions; it was about exploiting the very thing that made her unique. Its gluttony. Its tastebuds. “It’s not armored on the inside,” Drusya rasped, her voice still a little thick from the impact. “The mouth, the throat… that’s where it feels. That’s where it *tastes*.” She looked at the colossal maw, still glowing with nascent energy. “It’s a giant, hungry idiot. And we’re going to feed it a stomach ache it’ll never forget.” Petrovic, regaining his bearings, pushed himself upright. “Hunter Vaneva, what are you talking about? We need to fall back! That thing is about to unleash another blast!” “No time,” Drusya said, her eyes fixed on the gaping maw. “Ignat, the stew. The extra-spicy, ultra-concentrated mutant-tail stew. The vats from the storage unit. Petrovic, help him. Wheel them out. Now.” Ignat stared in shock, horror mingling across his dirt-streaked brow. “The… the ‘Volcano Vomit’ special? But that’s… that’s for when we need to clear out the sewer-beasts from the pipes! It’s corrosive!” “Exactly,” Drusya said, a grim smile touching her lips. “But we need more. More scent. More… irresistible agony. Ignat, you’re the flavor master. Make it sing. Make it *scream*.” Despite the blood blooming on his shirt, Ignat nodded, a strange fire in his eyes. He stumbled towards the back of the diner, Petrovic, still confused but following orders, awkwardly helping him. They wrestled out two immense, steaming vats of thick, crimson stew, bubbling ominously. Ignat, ignoring his pain, plunged a long ladle into the first vat, stirring with practiced ease. His free hand grabbed jars of dried *Skraptor*-pepper, ground *Gullet-Root*, and shimmering flakes of hyper-concentrated *Inferno-Moss*. He sprinkled, he poured, he tasted, a bleeding, battered maestro orchestrating a symphony of culinary destruction. The aroma that bloomed from the vats was overwhelming, even to Drusya. It was a searing, pungent, utterly intoxicating explosion of spice and savory meat. It made the eyes water and guts rumble simultaneously, an aromatic payload designed to bypass reason and assault raw appetite. The Megalodon-Wyrm, which had been slowly building its breath attack, suddenly paused. Its compound eyes flickered, drawn by the new, potent smell. The glowing energy in its throat wavered. “Perfect, Ignat,” Drusya murmured, watching the beast’s reaction. “Now… it’s drawn.” The beast’s head dipped, its massive snout twitching. The charging energy dissipated, replaced by a low, guttural rumble of pure, unadulterated hunger. It had tasted the air, and it wanted more. It wanted *in*. Its titanic maw, easily wide enough to swallow the entire artillery tank hull, began to open further, a chasm of serrated teeth and glistening, pink flesh. It wasn’t preparing to fire anymore. It was preparing to *eat*. To gorge itself on the incredible, tantalizing, agonizing aroma. It was a trap, and the Gourmand’s Leviathan was falling for it. But the vats were heavy. And its mouth was still a gaping maw of death. Someone had to manually jump inside.
