Chapter 6 of 10

Puppets and Parameters

The air grew dense, smelling of crushed slate and iron. Moyou paused, her finger halfway through sketching a complex variable into the dust of her courtyard. Her brow furrowed, a minute crease of irritation forming between her eyes. “Puppets?” she drawled, her voice a low murmur of annoyance. “How dreadfully unoriginal. And here I thought the Heavens had a modicum of creativity. I suppose expecting anything beyond a rehashed villain monologue from an omniscient, cosmic entity is too much.” Zongzheng Wuyuan, however, let out a delighted, guttural laugh, his scarred face splitting into a grin that stretched his features to a disturbing degree. “Oh, this is marvelous!” he boomed, a vibrant red aura erupting around him, smelling faintly of ozone and scorched earth. He lunged forward, not at Moyou, but directly at Shen Tulie, his movements a blur of malevolent intent. “A master pulling strings to enforce an ending? How quaint! Perhaps you should have left the stagecraft to a true artist of chaos!” Shen Tulie, or rather, the entity speaking through him, raised a hand. No, not a hand—a glowing sigil of retribution bloomed in the air before him, an ancient script writhing with golden light. “Your role is not to question, demon. Your role is to be a stepping stone in the protagonist’s inevitable triumph. Fall.” The sigil burst, not with an explosion, but with a silent, invisible force that slammed into Wuyuan. The sovereign roared with feral exhilaration as he was propelled backward, tearing a gouge through the very air. He didn’t stop, however. Instead, he twisted in mid-air, a vortex of dark Qi swirling around his fists. He shot back at Shen Tulie like a crimson meteor, sparks trailing in his wake. “Stepping stone?” Wuyuan growled, laughing. “I am the mountain that crushes all ambition, boy! Let’s see your grand design survive this!” The clash was immediate, brutal, and deafening. Wuyuan’s fists, wreathed in shadows, met Shen Tulie’s blinding white arcs. The initial impact sent ripples of force across the sky, a concussive wave that rattled the very foundations of Moyou’s floating peak. Stone grit pelted the courtyard floor. Shen Tulie moved with an unnerving grace, each movement precise, imbued with an ethereal power that seemed to warp reality around him. He conjured white thunderbolts that lashed out like braided scourges, seeking to bind Wuyuan. Wuyuan threw his weight directly into the assault. He met each blast head-on, venting the volatile force into explosive counter-attacks. “You lack conviction, marionette!” Wuyuan bellowed. When a flash of plasma seared his forearm, the blood did not spill. Instead, it solidified mid-air, hardening into wicked, crimson razor-wire that snapped back at Shen Tulie, forcing him to recoil. Their battle ascended, a maelstrom of light and shadow tearing across the serene, azure sky above the Qimen Star-Pavilion. They became blurs, streaks of light and darkness, slamming into the interconnected peaks that made up the sect’s domain. The first peak, a slender spire dedicated to meditation, groaned under the impact of Wuyuan's charge, then shattered into shards of rock that cascaded into the chaotic Qi below. The second peak, home to the Archives of Ancient Runes, sheared in half when Shen Tulie deflected a concentrated blast of abyssal force horizontally through its granite heart. A third peak, the Crucible of Ascendant Arts, met its end when Wuyuan, laughing maniacally, slammed Shen Tulie into its base with enough force to send shockwaves that cracked the entire landmass apart. Boulders the size of houses rained down, ruptured formations venting wild flares of power. Yet, Moyou remained undisturbed. Hunkered down amidst the debris of her courtyard, Moyou ignored the noise, her chalk scraping across slate tiles as she set down multi-dimensional equations. The air around her shimmered faintly, a barrier of pure conceptual math deflecting any stray rubble or errant Qi blasts. “The recursion is… elegant,” she muttered, her eyes tracing a line of symbols. “But the parameter for the singularity induction is flawed. Past self, you were so close to breaking the cycle, but you left a critical vulnerability here.” She erased a section with a sharp swipe of her sleeve, her chalk resuming its frantic dance, filling the gap with a new, even more complex array of variables and operators. The world could be ending, but a miscalculated equation was a far graver offense. Hundun, meanwhile, had found a new, delightful snack. As colossal discharge arcs raked the sky, occasionally missing their target to split the flagstones, the void-badger waddled through the crossfire. Its tiny, beady eyes gleamed with hungry anticipation. It opened its maw, a miniature singularity unfurling within, and swallowed down a sizzling bolt that had splintered off a falling boulder. A satisfied burp escaped its lips, smelling faintly of charged particles and burnt ozone. “Good boy, Hundun,” Moyou murmured absently, not even glancing up. “Collect those signatures for later analysis. Might be useful for calibrating the nullification field.” The battle raged on, Wuyuan’s razor-blood tearing through Shen Tulie’s ethereal barriers, searing white discharge scorching the warlord's flesh. But the narrative’s avatar had a deeper wellspring of power. With a sudden, synchronized strike, Shen Tulie unleashed a concentrated blast of decreed destiny. It did not wound Wuyuan’s flesh, but pried an opening in his defensive shroud, exposing his ribcage. Wuyuan roared in outrage as the invisible power pushed him back, leaving him exposed. “Foolish demon,” Shen Tulie’s voice resonated, echoing across the shattered peaks. “You cannot fight the inevitable.” His hands rose, not in a martial gesture, but as if pulling on invisible strings. The already blood-red sky above them split further, tearing open an impossibly vast void. Through the rent in reality, a colossal blade, forged of pure, blinding white light, descended. It was not a weapon of metal, but of cosmic judgment, radiating an aura of absolute, terrifying finality. The Heavenly Execution Sword, an instrument designed to erase all who defied destiny, materialized above the Qimen Star-Pavilion, its sharp, luminous edge blotting out the sun. And it was coming down, with an unwavering, catastrophic speed, directly onto Song Moyou’s unprotected, hunched-over back.
