Chapter 4 of 10

The Masochist's Ascent

913 words

Moyou clicked her tongue, the sound sharp as a chisel against stone. Time was money, and screaming seniors were a fiscal waste. Her gaze flickered to the wide-eyed Shen Tulie, then to the swirling core of the plinth, where the following glyph-sequence thrummed, almost fully decoded. A rapid, complex series of arrays bloomed across her palm, coalescing into a shimmering, cobalt-blue boot. Not a physical boot, but a pure kinetic projection. Before Shen Tulie could even register her intent, the spectral foot materialized with impossible speed, connecting squarely with his chest. He gasped, a sound cut short as the impact, amplified by a localized repulsion field, hurled him through the fragile, now-crystallized doorway. He became a blur, a human projectile launched with mathematical precision directly out of the vault and into the humid air of the Qimen Star-Pavilion’s lower peaks. The karmic lightning, deprived of its immediate target, flared one last, frustrated time, vaporizing a section of the plinth’s protective runes before Moyou completed the final sequence. A pulse of emerald light radiated from the hexagonal imprint, tracing patterns across the cavern walls before collapsing inward. Moyou plucked the now-inert slate from its cavity, a faint, pulsing sigil branded onto the obsidian-like disc. She stepped through the shattered entrance, brushing dust from her robes. The humid air, thick with the scent of ozone and singed silk, greeted her. Her gaze swept over the Qimen Star-Pavilion’s familiar, interlocking peaks, then dipped to the floating continent’s jagged underside, where an impossible sight awaited. Clinging to the raw, wind-scoured rock face, scaling it with bloody, bare hands and a terrifying grin, was Zongzheng Wuyuan. His obsidian armor was scarred, one shoulder plate ripped free, and crimson trails streaked the pale stone beneath him. Yet, his eyes, burning with an unholy glee, locked onto her. He had intercepted Shen Tulie mid-flight, a casual grab plucking the gasping senior martial brother from the air. Wuyuan held the dazed Shen Tulie by his collar, dangling him like a prize before dropping him unceremoniously onto a nearby, pristine courtyard statue. The statue cracked under the impact. “My radiant flower of mathematical wrath!” Wuyuan’s voice boomed, carrying across the chasm of air. His climb was complete. He stood at the edge of the vault’s entrance, a demonic king dripping blood, utterly delighted. “I knew you couldn’t resist my magnificent return. That throw, last time? *Exquisite*.” Moyou’s eyebrow twitched. The carved stone plate pulsed faintly in her grip, warm against her palm. She hated interruptions. She especially hated *bloody* interruptions that declared their affection for being thrown off mountains. “Must you bleed all over my doorstep?” she drawled, her voice flat, devoid of warmth. “It complicates the molecular structure of the atmosphere. And your continued existence complicates my schedule.” Wuyuan merely laughed, a rich, guttural sound that vibrated through the air. “Such beautiful disdain! It sings to my very soul. My dearest Moyou, I have come bearing gifts.” He gestured with a blood-stained hand towards the distant, swirling storm clouds that marked the outer reaches of the Calamity Marches, his domain. “My entire Infernal Host of the Nether-Reaches. Twenty million souls, trained in the art of destruction, yours to command. A dowry, for your hand. We can shatter the Cangxi Realm together, darling. Just imagine the chaos!” Hundun, who had materialized by Moyou’s side, sniffing at the blood trails on the stone, snorted. It eyed Shen Tulie’s prone form, then Wuyuan, before letting out a soft burp. A small, intricately carved jade amulet, glowing faintly with protective resonance, tumbled onto the stone. It was Shen Tulie’s Chronos-Weave Amulet, the very artifact that had shielded him from countless misfortunes. Hundun nudged it with its nose. It tasted pleasantly like strawberries. Moyou’s gaze flickered from Hundun’s unexpected snack to Wuyuan, who was now beaming, awaiting her acceptance of his demonic army. Her mouth thinned into a line. Chaos was inefficient. Destruction was messy. Both were antithetical to elegant calculation. With a sigh that conveyed the utter weariness of dealing with lesser intellects, Moyou raised her free hand. A vortex of shimmering, translucent force erupted around Wuyuan, not pulling him, but *pushing*. It was a kinetic repulsion array, honed to perfection, designed not for damage, but for sheer, unadulterated trajectory. The air around Wuyuan compressed, then exploded outwards, launching him with far greater velocity than her previous gravity array. He rocketed upwards, then outward, a tiny, shrieking speck against the cerulean sky. “Farewell, my beautiful tormentor!” Wuyuan’s maniacal laughter echoed across the peaks, fading only as he became a dot, then vanished into the chaotic Qi below. “Do it again! Throw me into a black hole next time!” Moyou watched him go, then turned her attention to the relic. It pulsed brighter, then projected a holographic map of the entire Cangxi Realm above her palm. Tiny, intricate lines of light crisscrossed the floating continents, converging, tracing the path of the grand, forbidden array. Her past self’s genius was undeniable. The map swirled, resolving into a single, terrifying point: the exact center of the Heavenly Maelstrom, a colossal vortex of primordial Qi that tore through the very fabric of the realm, miles beneath the lowest floating continent. And at its heart, glowing with an ominous, sickly purple light, was an anomaly. Not a natural phenomenon, but a dense, churning accumulation of karmic mass. It was a storm within a storm, a Tribulation already brewing, waiting to erase the world if her ultimate array was ever activated.
