Chapter 2: Mirror Image, Twisted Reflection
1.6k words
Screams ripped through the biting wind. The emerald light pulsed, blinding. Soldat shoved Rudeus behind a jagged rock, his hand already on his sword hilt. They braced for impact, for something monstrous.
A figure dropped from the swirling vortex. Not a monster, not a demon, not even a twisted beast of the Northern Continent. Just a girl.
Her landing kicked up a plume of snow. She stood, dusting off her fur-trimmed coat, an almost identical replica of his own. Shock froze Rudeus. His breath hitched, caught in his throat like a shard of ice.
His emperor class mage instincts returned instantly. He grabbed his staff, the gnarled wood familiar in his grip. Magic surged, a primal hum against his fingertips, the sensation a surprising comfort after so long.
Rudiko, his exact female doppelganger, met his gaze. Her eyes, startlingly blue, flickered, scanning him from head to toe. A slow, knowing smirk spread across her face, a familiar curve of lips that sent a jolt of alarm through him.
That smirk. It twisted his gut. A jolt of perverse recognition shot through him. Her lecherous gaze, so blatant, so unafraid. Her stance, a casual slouch that screamed defiance, a subtle challenge.
They were his own flaws, his own hidden desires, magnified and paraded before him. Uncomfortable self-awareness washed over him, a cold flush creeping up his neck. He saw himself in her, the parts he hated, the parts he sometimes secretly reveled in. It was like looking into a funhouse mirror, only the reflection was real, tangible, and standing right in front of him.
A strange, illicit curiosity, sharp and insistent, sparked within him. He hadn't felt anything so potent in years, not since before his self-imposed exile. His core belief that he was beyond meaningful connection, beyond *feeling* anything beyond his usual melancholy and perversion, began to shake.
Soldat growled, his sword half-drawn. "Who are you? Identify yourself!"
Rudiko ignored him. Her eyes never left Rudeus, a predatory glint in their depths. A low chuckle escaped her lips, husky, unsettling, and far too familiar. "Well, well, well. Look what the dimensional rift dragged in."
Her voice, an echo of his own, sent a shiver down his spine. He felt exposed, stripped bare. Every perverted thought, every cynical observation he'd ever harbored, suddenly felt externalized, laid bare for the world to see.
He tightened his grip on the staff, the wind magic at its tip growing warmer. "Who are you?" His voice, usually dull, held an edge of something he hadn't heard in years – fear, yes, but also a strange, thrilling anticipation.
She took a step, then another, closing the distance. Her gaze lingered on his staff, then dipped lower, sweeping over his form. A blush, faint but noticeable, bloomed on her cheeks. A mirroring reaction, he realized with a fresh wave of unease.
"You're even more pathetic in person," she purred, the words a playful taunt. "But the potential... oh, the potential."
Rudeus bristled. Pathetic? He was Rudeus Greyrat, Emperor-class mage, a powerful practitioner of silent spellcasting. But then, he *was* pathetic. He knew it. Hadn't he just spent the morning wallowing in his self-pity?
His mind raced, trying to categorize her. Demon? Illusion? Another strange phenomenon of the Displacement Incident? Nothing fit. She was him, yet not him, an impossible paradox given flesh.
Soldat stepped forward, placing himself between them, a living shield. "Stay back, creature." His sword gleamed, a warning.
Rudiko scoffed, a dismissive wave of her hand. "Creature? Darling, I'm more you than *you* are." Her eyes, still fixed on Rudeus, seemed to pierce through his defenses, seeing every insecurity, every suppressed urge, every shameful thought.
A faint glow emanated from her. Not magic, not exactly. More like an aura, a resonance, a vibrational hum that matched the pulse in his own veins. He felt a pull, a magnetic force drawing him in. It was terrifying. It was exhilarating.
He remembered the old man, the pervert god, telling him to live his life to the fullest. This felt like a challenge to that, a direct confrontation with his own deepest, most hidden self. A trial, perhaps, sent by some mocking deity.
"What do you want?" Rudeus demanded, raising his staff slightly, the ball of wind magic growing more defined at its tip. The air crackled around them.
She smiled, a predatory glint in her eyes. "Want? I want a conversation. A *very* intimate conversation, it seems. And perhaps... a reunion."
Her hand, gloved in dark leather, reached out. Not towards him, but towards the air beside him, as if testing the space. A ripple, almost imperceptible, passed through the very fabric of reality where her fingers brushed. The world seemed to shimmer for a fleeting moment.
Soldat let out a low growl, his grip tightening on his sword. "I won't let you harm him. Not while I breathe."
Rudiko finally glanced at Soldat, an eyebrow arched, a hint of annoyance crossing her features. "Relax, big guy. I'm not here to hurt him. Not physically, anyway." Her smile widened, revealing a flash of white teeth, sharp and clean. "Emotionally? Well, that's another story entirely."
Rudeus felt his palms grow sweaty, his heart hammering against his ribs. This was too much. This woman was a walking, talking mirror of his inner turmoil. Every cynical thought, every self-deprecating comment he ever made, she seemed to embody it with a perverse confidence that was both alluring and repulsive.
He couldn't tear his gaze away from her. The familiarity was unnerving. The way she chewed on her lower lip for a moment, the slight tilt of her head when she considered something, the way she unconsciously tapped her foot. These were *his* mannerisms, amplified, made feminine and brazen.
Panic began to set in. Was this a test? A punishment? Had his perverted thoughts manifested into a physical form to torment him? A cruel joke by the gods, perhaps, for his years of lewd introspection?
No. This felt different. More profound. More like destiny, or a catastrophic accident of cosmic proportions.
His heart pounded against his ribs. The cold air suddenly felt stifling, too thin to breathe. He needed answers. He needed to understand this impossible situation before he broke down.
Rudiko took another step, her eyes never leaving his, her focus absolute. She was closing the gap, slowly, deliberately. Soldat stood firm, a living shield, but Rudeus felt a strange, primal urge to step around him, to face this bizarre reflection head-on, to see what horrors or wonders she held.
"You smell like ozone," he said, the words slipping out before he could stop them, a desperate attempt to grasp at something tangible in the chaos.
She laughed, a genuine, delighted sound that was also a twisted echo of his own inner amusement. "And you, my dear counterpart, smell like stale mana and unfulfilled potential. A potent combination, I must say."
He flinched. Stale mana. That was accurate. He hadn't truly pushed himself in years. He'd been drifting, surviving, but not living. Her words, cutting and direct, sliced through his self-deception.
"Where did you come from?" he pressed, his voice tight, demanding a proper answer this time.
Her expression softened, just for a moment, revealing a flash of something akin to vulnerability, a shared weariness. "A place not so different from this one. A world where you... well, where *I* made different choices. Or maybe the same choices, just... me, in a slightly different package."
Her explanation was no explanation at all, yet it resonated with a strange, unsettling truth. Different choices. He had so many regrets. What if she was the manifestation of a path not taken? A living 'what if' in female form?
The wind howled around them, kicking up snow in stinging gusts. The emerald fissure above them began to waver, pulsating less intensely. Was it closing? Or was it just... settling into a new, terrifying permanence?
Soldat, ever practical, pointed his sword at Rudiko, his patience wearing thin. "Enough talk. Identify yourself, woman, or face my blade. I won't ask again."
Rudiko barely spared him a glance, her attention absolute, centered entirely on Rudeus. It was as if Soldat wasn't even there, a mere obstacle in her path. This intensity, this singular focus, was also terrifyingly familiar. Rudeus knew he could be like that, obsessive, when something truly captured his attention.
He found himself wondering about her world. Did she have a family? Was she an adventurer? Was she... happy? The thought felt alien, almost blasphemous, considering his own bleak outlook. Could he, in another life, be capable of such a thing?
"My name is Rudiko," she said, her voice dropping to a near whisper, intimate despite the biting wind and the looming threat of Soldat's blade. "And I think... I know you better than you know yourself. Every dark corner, every secret desire. Every fear."
The claim was audacious, arrogant, and yet, Rudeus couldn't deny the unsettling truth of it. She *did* seem to see right through him, her eyes holding the same perverted glint he often caught in his own reflection, the same weariness, the same underlying intelligence. This wasn't just a mirror. This was an echo, a resonance, a twisted, perfect counterpart, a soulmate found through the most impossible means.
Before Rudeus could articulate his terror or fascination, Rudiko lunged forward, not with hostility, but with an open-mouthed kiss that tasted of ozone and a strange, unsettling familiarity.
