Chapter 9 of 10

The Sovereign's Return

1.0k words

A high-pitched whine ripped through the Chasma plaza as the first volley of plasma bolts lanced towards the modified rig. Zhai Shen, lounging in the command chair, barely registered the impact. The Omega-class chassis, now infused with his altered essence, shrugged off the attacks. He stretched, a deep rumble vibrating through the mecha’s frame. “Such clumsy aggression,” he murmured, his voice echoing through the comms. “A waste of energy.” “Zhai Shen, they’re going to saturate us!” Yara’s voice crackled, urgent. She was already working at the co-pilot station, tapping runic bypasses. “The main cannon is charging. We need to move, now!” He ignored her, his gaze fixed on the incoming combat frames. He saw not metal and energy, but lines of force, vectors of attack, and the predictable rhythms of their psychic pilots. His awareness broadened, encompassing the entire plaza. With a mental nudge, the massive industrial carrier shuddered, then moved. It shed the grinding, utilitarian friction of an ore-hauler and flowed. The colossal legs, each as thick as a utility tower, executed a low, sweeping kick, throwing up a cloud of dust and debris that momentarily obscured the front line. Two battle rigs, caught unaware, crumpled like discarded foil. Their pilots’ screams were cut short as their cockpits imploded. The remaining interceptors, thrown off balance by the gargantuan frame's sudden agility, opened fire again. But Zhai Shen’s control was absolute. The hull pivoted, its massive drill-arm whipping out in a blur of black steel. The ancient, fluid movements of the Flowing River Palm style were magnified a thousand-fold by the mecha’s frame. It wasn’t a block; it was a devastating parry that deflected a barrage of energy blasts back into the ranks of the attackers. One plasma shot, redirected with terrifying precision, tore through the leg of an opposing frame, shearing through its primary power conduit. “Unacceptable!” a distant voice shrieked over the comms – Tarkin Dax, his transmission clipping with rage. “How is that heap moving like that? It’s not even an Apex!” Zhai Shen didn’t bother to reply. His focus narrowed. He saw the weak points, the over-extended stances, the telegraphs of their attacks. He wasn’t piloting a machine; he *was* the machine, a ten-thousand-year-old warrior expressing his will through a new, colossal body. The obsidian titan lunged, its massive frame blurring across the dust. Its left leg swept low, then its right slammed down, mimicking the crushing force of the Iron Mountain Stomp. The ground quaked. Three more units were tossed aside, their internal gyros unable to compensate for the sudden, violent impact. Yara, meanwhile, was frantically patching into the planetary broadcast relays. “They’re trying to jam me,” she muttered, her fingers flicking across the terminal. “But this footage… it’s too raw. Too real.” Her lips tightened into a thin line. “Override complete. Broadcasting live to the entire Vatra.” On a thousand screens across the Pan-Galactic Vatra, from the opulent spires of the Hegemony capital to the grimy Gene-Null under-districts, the image materialized: a monstrous, obsidian mecha, moving with the grace of an ancient master, dismantling advanced war machines with terrifying ease. The whispers began in the crowded slum alleys, in the hushed tones of resistance cells. The mockery of physical combat, the propaganda that declared it obsolete, shattered in an instant. A spark ignited, then another, then a conflagration. “The Sovereign is returned!” a voice screamed from a hidden comms channel, echoing across the Vatra. The phrase spread like wildfire. Far above, aboard the Hegemony orbital command ship *Aegis Dawn*, the sector Overseer watched the unnatural spectacle unfold on his primary monitor. Tension locked his knuckles against the polished chrome of his desk. “The audacity! The sheer, unmitigated audacity!” His calm façade cracked, revealing a raw, guttural rage. “That antique bastard… that *thing*… is inspiring a rebellion!” His stare locked onto a smaller data stream: Yara Qadir, her features taut with focus, superimposed over the mayhem. “And you, little traitor,” he hissed, a venomous smile spreading across his face. “Did you truly think I didn’t know? Your quaint little resistance sigil, your convenient disappearances, your carefully curated data logs. A foolish child playing at espionage.” He slammed a fist onto a red, unmarked button. “Activate Protocol Sigma-7. Execution sequence: Qadir, Yara.” On the Obsidian Excavator’s bridge, Yara gasped. A searing pain erupted in her skull, then spread like liquid fire through her veins. Her muscles spasmed, her vision blurred. She clawed at her throat, a strangled rattle in her chest. Her body seized, collapsing against the panel. Her fingers, still attempting to transmit, twitched uselessly. Her gaze, glazed with agony, caught Zhai Shen’s. “Zhai Shen…” she rasped, her voice fading, a thin stream of blood escaping the corner of her mouth. Her body began to melt, her skin blistering, dissolving into a viscous sludge. Helix-Rot. A targeted, accelerated version. Zhai Shen’s gaze, which had been distant, calculating, sharpened with an intensity that warped the air around him. The lazy apathy vanished. He saw the rapid ruin in Yara’s features, the venomous cellular collapse. A low growl rumbled deep in his chest, shaking the entire mecha. He looked at the collapsing woman, then at the monitor, where the Overseer's smirking face had just flickered. He stood. His hand slammed onto the release mechanism of the mecha’s primary hatch. The colossal war-rig, which had been a whirlwind of destruction, froze mid-strike. Its dark casing pulsed with a dangerous, contained fury. A moment of absolute silence descended upon the plaza, pregnant with dread. Then, Zhai Shen launched himself. Not a jump, not a leap. Concentrated Abyssal Qi erupted from his very core, ripping through the top of the Omega chassis, tearing through the atmosphere, leaving a scorching, ionized trail behind him. He was a human projectile, screaming through the void. He hit the reinforced observation deck of the *Aegis Dawn*’s bridge with the force of a small asteroid, the high-tensile tritanium glass shattering inward in a starburst of jagged shards, spraying debris and screaming technicians across the command center. He landed on the deck, bare-handed, his glare locking onto the Overseer. On the main monitor, Yara’s vitals flatlined. The red line faded to black.
