Chapter 8 of 10

Hijacking the Apex

1.4k words

A colossal slab of reinforced structural stone, the size of a transport skiff, broke loose with a deafening crack. It plummeted, kicking up a dust cloud that momentarily swallowed the sarcophagus and the two figures on it. Zhai Shen didn’t move, not truly, merely shifted his weight. A blur of movement, and Yara, caught off guard, stumbled, pulling a choked gasp. He extended a foot, not with speed, but with an almost lazy precision, placing it against the falling block. No grand exertion, no dramatic display, just a precise redirection of momentum. The slab, instead of crushing them, scraped along the crypt wall, deflected by his boot heel, then smashed into the floor beside them, sending a tremor through the tomb and showering them with powdered masonry. “Crude,” Zhai Shen murmured, dusting his tattered tunic with a languid motion. “They could have been more subtle.” “Subtle?” Yara coughed, wiping dust from her eyes. “They just tried to flatten us! The whole ceiling is about to come down!” Her gaze flicked to the gaping maw now visible above, a spinning maw of tritanium alloy teeth gnashing through the remaining stone. “A minor inconvenience,” Zhai Shen dismissed, already moving. He strode towards the falling debris, not away from it, his eyes fixed on the massive drill head. It was a maelstrom of gnashing steel and pulverized rock, grinding downward. The vibration rattled bone; the screech of shredded bedrock cut straight through the teeth. “What are you doing?!” Yara yelled over the din, struggling to keep her footing on the trembling floor. “We need to find cover!” Zhai Shen didn't answer directly. He stepped onto the largest fragment of fractured masonry, then kicked off with fluid momentum. His form was a dark streak against the pulverizing cloud. He aimed for the very edge of the spinning drill head, a place where the churning mechanism met the remaining rock. Yara watched, bewildered, as Zhai Shen began to ascend. It wasn’t a climb in the conventional sense. He climbed with languid detachment, seating his soles and palms onto the churning alloy teeth. Each contact was brief, a momentary anchor, as if he were dancing on a tornado. The Abyssal marrow within him hummed, granting him an unnatural affinity with the shearing forces. He was not resisting the movement of the drill; he was flowing with it, using its own centrifugal force to aid his ascent. Above, the drill’s progress was momentarily interrupted. A ramp of armored plating extended downward, and from it spilled a squad of institute enforcers, their Apex-Armatures clanking heavily onto the newly formed platform. Their integrated neural emitters glowed emerald, lashing out with focused thermal rays designed to burn through ceramite and bone alike. One beam sizzled past Zhai Shen’s ear, incinerating a chunk of rock where his head had been a nanosecond before. Another struck the rotating drill-bit he was clinging to, sending sparks flying and making the tritanium groan. “Stay low, Zhai Shen!” Yara screamed, trying to draw their fire with her own blaster, a futile gesture against the armored titans. She was still on the tomb floor, trying to find a path through the collapsing debris to join him. Zhai Shen didn’t seem to notice the incoming fire. He continued his ascent, a phantom amidst the rock dust. His eyes were locked on the small, recessed hatch high above, the likely entry point to the mecha’s control chamber. Coherent rays scorched crosshatched patterns around him, but he moved with instinctive foresight, ducking or swaying out of trajectories that would have incinerated mortal flesh. He was not hurried; he was unreachable. He reached the main shaft of the excavator, a colossal cylinder of dark, hardened alloy. The gravity shields, shimmering fields of compressed spacetime designed to repel boarders, glowed faintly around the pilot's access points. These were impassable barriers, meant to deflect even projectile weapons, let alone a fleshy body. Yet, Zhai Shen didn’t pause. He executed a movement so fluid, so utterly divorced from the known laws of physics, that it made Yara gasp. He didn't jump over the shield, or try to smash through it. Instead, he simply *became lighter*. A subtle distortion warped the air around him, a whisper of Abyssal Qi shedding every scrap of ballast. He drifted upwards, a leaf caught in a gentle breeze, passing *through* the gravity shield as if it were mere smoke. The Feather-Weight discipline, refined over centuries in another life, rendered the advanced screening fields of the Vatra utterly useless. He landed silently on the mecha's hull, directly above the access hatch. The enforcers, now within meters of him, reacted with frantic particle bursts. But it was too late. Zhai Shen’s fist, still radiating a faint, inky glow, slammed into the access panel. The reinforced plasteel buckled and tore like paper, exposing the internal mechanisms. Inside the cockpit, the pilot, a hulking figure strapped into a neural interface rig, screamed in outrage. “You dare, null?! I’ll burn your mind to ash!” He slammed his hands onto the control console, activating the direct neural feedback system. A lethal psionic spike surged from the pilot's helmet, aimed straight through the breached hull. Zhai Shen tilted his head. The psionic assault struck him with a blinding sting. Instead of collapsing, his meridians flexed. The dark current of his cultivation surged forward. He did not sever the psychic thread; he seized it, driving a pulse of pure abyssal will backward into the neural interface. Inside the cockpit, the pilot choked as the neuro-feedback violently inverted, amplified a thousandfold by the sovereign's will. The pilot’s head snapped back, his body convulsing violently in the straps. Tendrils of black lightning sparked from the interface wires, arcing into his skull. A final, gurgling sound, and the pilot went limp, smoke curling from his helmet. His mind, and everything that made him, was utterly shattered. Zhai Shen dropped into the pilot’s seat, detaching the inert body with a casual shove. The colossal Omega-Class Excavator Mecha shuddered. Its dull grey plating, scarred by decades of mining duty, began to shift. A dark, inky sheen spread across its surface, deepening from grey to pitch black, absorbing all light. The mecha, a beast of Hegemony design, was being reborn. Yara, having finally scaled the exterior and slid through the breached hatch, landed heavily in the co-pilot’s seat, her blaster still clutched in her hand. “Zhai Shen! What… what did you do to it?” “Made it mine,” he stated, his voice calm, but with an underlying hum of predatory satisfaction. He ran his hand over the controls, a strange sense of familiarity washing over him. The flow of internal qi found a strange conduit in the machine's electro-synthetic loom. The massive drill, which had been gnashing downward, reversed its spin and bored upward with terrifying velocity. The enforcers on the platform scrambled back in alarm as the deck beneath them buckled into an ascending iron colossus. “Resistance frequency 7-alpha-9,” Yara barked, already working with practiced efficiency. “I’m syncing a ghost overlay. They won’t know who’s piloting this thing.” Her fingers flew across the console, a blur of motion as she uploaded encrypted Resistance codes, masking their presence, twisting the mecha’s identification signals into a labyrinth of false data. The darkened hull pulsed with a low resonance as Zhai Shen threaded his breath into the core servos. The Omega-Class Excavator burst into the Chasma Institute’s lower yard, throwing up a fountain of pulverized stone and scattered cadets. It was no longer a mining vehicle; it was an obsidian monstrosity, wrapped in a cold, suffocating pressure. Its massive frame loomed against the pale sky, casting an impossibly long shadow. A moment of stunned silence descended upon the plaza. Then, the silence shattered. Surrounding them, meticulously arranged in concentric arcs, waited an entire institute garrison. Dozens of Apex-Armatures, their multi-jointed limbs poised and sensory crowns burning amber, formed a blockade of dark plating and crackling heat. Each one was a harbinger of destruction, their pilots’ minds burning with fury. The air crackled with barely contained power. Zhai Shen, leaning back in his newly acquired war-rig, sat squarely in the center of the ring.
