Chapter 3: Smuggled Behind the Iron Gates

1.2k words

Rain fell like liquid lead, washing over the neon-drenched metal of Sector 9's border checkpoint. Heavy, mechanical thrumming vibrated through the wet asphalt as the massive iron gates loomed ahead. Standing in the queue of shivering refugees, Lin Xian adjusted the oversized hood of his stolen jacket, keeping his head cast downward. Cold sweat mixed with the grimy water dripping from his brow. Blue thermal lasers swept across the crowd, scanning for any trace of biological anomalies or unauthorized lifeforms entering the lower districts. Beneath his stolen clothes, Lin Xian’s flesh writhed. His newly acquired camo-skin tissue, absorbed from the Outland beast, was the only thing keeping him from being blasted into ash. Every cell in his body screamed as he forced his internal temperature to drop, mimicking the cold, damp profile of a normal human corpse. Step by step, the line crawled forward. Two armored enforcers stood beside the scanner, their heavy rifles cradled against their chests. Their visors gleamed with a cold, predatory light as they watched the desperate scavengers return from the wastes. "Next," a metallic voice grunted through a loudspeaker. Lin Xian dragged his feet, adopting the light, shuffling stride of the young scavenger girl whose form he had consumed and mimicked. His small, slender hands trembled inside his pockets, a perfect physical imitation of her fragile frame. But inside, his muscles were coiled like steel springs, ready to snap. When he stepped under the glowing arch of the scanner, a high-pitched hum filled his ears. Red lights flickered across the sensors. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird, each beat threatening to spike his body heat and trigger the alarms. "Stabilize," he whispered to the dark entity swirling in his veins. Answering his silent plea, a freezing numbness spread through his chest, locking his body temperature at a flat, dead baseline. Green lights flashed on the gate's display. "Clear," the guard muttered, waving a hand without even looking up from his datapad. Slipping through the heavy iron turnstile, Lin Xian merged into the thick crowd of the outer slums, his chest finally heaving as he drew in a breath of toxic, sulfur-scented air. --- Darkness offered a temporary sanctuary in the narrow, trash-strewn alleyway three blocks from the checkpoint. Lin Xian slumped against a damp brick wall, his breath coming in ragged, painful gasps as the strain of maintaining the disguise caught up to him. His stolen body began to shudder violently. Deep within his lower torso, the alien parasite roared to life, demanding tribute for the energy spent bypassing the thermal gates. Grotesque physical changes began to warp his temporary form. Under his skin, muscle fibers twisted and reformed, pushing a raw, tumescent growth of flesh from his lower abdomen. It was a bizarre, hyper-sensitive reproductive node, an invasive organ birthed from the chaotic blend of human and Void DNA. Pain and intense, feverish heat surged through his groin. Using his small, delicate mimicked hands, Lin Xian clawed at his clothes, grasping the throbbing, mutating growth in a desperate bid to soothe the burning agony. Every touch sent a jolt of raw, electric sensation straight to his brain, blurring his vision with tears. His mind threatened to fracture under the sheer intensity of the alien impulses flooding his consciousness. Looking down through the dim light, his eyes fell upon a pair of discarded, stained white silk stockings stuffed into the scavenger girl's pack. They still carried the faint, sweet scent of her original human life. Reaching out with trembling fingers, he pulled the soft fabric close, pressing it against his face to inhale the scent and anchor his fracturing sanity. Desperation drove him to wrap the worn, white silk tightly around the sensitive, pulsing flesh-growth. He squeezed, using the pressure and the concentrated genetic scent of the stockings to synchronize his volatile DNA. Waves of shuddering pleasure and pain racked his small frame as the mutation stabilized, absorbing the final remnants of the girl's biological signature. Gradually, the strange organ receded back into his flesh, leaving him gasping on the wet concrete. Shifting his skeletal structure back into his true male form, he stood up, his bones popping as his natural height returned. He wiped his sweaty brow, his eyes cold and focused once more. --- Neon signs flickered overhead, casting long, sickly green shadows across the dilapidated corridor of the tenement building. Lin Xian hurried down the hall, his boots making no sound against the rotting floorboards. He reached the rusted door of Pod 412 and slid his keycard through the slot. Inside, the air was heavy with the smell of cheap disinfectant and the metallic tang of blood. "Xia?" he called out, his voice barely a whisper as he closed the door behind him. A weak, ragged cough echoed from the small bed in the corner of the cramped room. Lin Xian rushed to her side, his heart sinking at the sight of his younger sister. Lin Xia lay curled under a thin, threadbare blanket, her pale skin glistening with sweat. Black, spiderweb-like veins crept up the side of her neck, pulsing faintly with a dim, violet light. Void-rot. The cosmic disease was eating her alive, slowly converting her cells into crystalline dust. "Brother..." she murmured, her eyelids fluttering as she struggled to focus on his face. "I'm here, Xia," Lin Xian said, pressing a cool hand against her burning forehead. His hand trembled. Her fever was worse than when he had left for the Outlands three days ago. Turning quickly to the small medicine cabinet on the wall, he tore it open, searching for the blue-capped vials of stabilizer. Nothing. The shelves were completely bare, except for a layer of gray dust. Panic, cold and sharp, gripped his throat as he turned back to his sister. "Where is the medicine, Xia?" he demanded, his voice tight. "They... they took it," she whispered, a tear tracing a path through the grime on her cheek. "Who took it?" he asked, his jaw clenching so hard his teeth clicked. "Warden Vance's men," she sobbed, coughing weakly. "They said our rent was overdue, and the quota wasn't met... they took the whole box." Fury, hot and wild, flared in Lin Xian's chest, threatening to unleash the dark tentacles sleeping beneath his skin. Without those stabilizers, the Void-rot would reach her heart in less than forty-eight hours. He had to get them back, but open retaliation was suicide. If the high-district oligarchs or their lackeys discovered he had survived the Outlands with an altered physiology, they would both be dragged to the incinerators. To them, any trace of Void mutation in a low-district resident was a bio-hazard to be purged. His survival had to remain an absolute secret. Squeezing his sister's frail hand, he forced a reassuring smile onto his face. "I'll get it back, Xia," he promised, his voice dropping to a dangerous quiet. "I swear it." Suddenly, the heavy metal door of the pod groaned under a massive, external pressure. Heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway outside, stopping directly in front of their unit. A shadow fell over the doorway as Warden Vance himself steps in, holding a foreclosure notice for their pod.
