Chapter 2: The Taste of Copper

Ash tasted like rusted iron. Dragging his boots through the grey silt, Lin Xian clutched his left side. His breath came in ragged, burning gasps that rattled inside his chest. Every step felt like grinding broken glass into his joints, but he could not stop. Behind him, the low, mechanical hum of Sector 9 patrol drones vibrated through the canyon walls. They were hunting him. They wanted to erase the evidence of their dirty work, and to them, he was nothing but a loose end waiting to be snipped. His left arm pulse-throbbed with an unnatural, suffocating heat. Underneath his torn sleeve, the black, writhing mass of void-matter coiled around his bones like a nest of hungry vipers. It felt alive. It felt starving. Pain flared, sharp and demanding, forcing him to slide down the side of a jagged obsidian boulder. He needed to get back to the lower districts. He needed to reach Lin Xia before the high-district oligarchs realized he had survived their purge. Every shadow seemed to stretch toward him, whispering of his impending demise. His mind swam with a toxic mix of adrenaline and the alien entity’s primal hunger. Below the ridge, a low growl cut through the howling wind. Lin Xian froze, his hand instinctively flying to his chest where his sister’s silver locket rested. He peered over the edge of the rock, his eyes widening as he spotted a creature limping through the ravine. Yellow, multi-faceted eyes blinked in the dim light of the Outlands. It was an Outland Stalker hound, a low-tier cosmic horror that looked like a peeled, muscular canine mixed with rusted metal plating. This one was wounded, its hind leg dragged in the dirt, leaving a trail of glowing, acidic blue ichor. Instinct, raw and feral, surged from the depths of Lin Xian’s spine. The black mass in his left arm reacted before his brain could process the command. Black, whip-like tentacles erupted from his forearm, tearing through his sleeve with a wet, sickening rip. They elongated in a fraction of a second, lashing across the distance like striking cobras. Flesh met flesh with a heavy, wet thud. Three razor-sharp appendages skewered the Stalker hound directly through its ribcage. The beast didn't even have time to howl. It let out a choked gurgle as the tentacles hoisted its heavy body into the air. Warmth flooded back into Lin Xian’s arm as the hollow tips of the tentacles began to drink. They pumped rhythmically, draining the glowing blue ichor and the dark, thick blood of the cosmic beast. Deep inside his muscular system, a sudden, violent surge of foreign DNA integrated into his cells. His vision sharpened. The agonizing pain in his ribs faded into a dull itch as his broken bones knitted together in seconds. He could feel the hound's predatory instincts, its spatial awareness, and its raw physical power merging with his own. *Feed. Grow. Evolve.* A chilling whisper echoed in the cavern of his skull, a dry, rasping voice that did not belong to him. It sounded like grinding stones, scraping against his sanity with absolute, uncaring malice. Gasping, Lin Xian yanked his tentacles back. The dried, hollow husk of the Stalker hound crashed to the dirt, crumbling into grey dust at his feet. He stared at his left hand, watching the black appendages slowly slither back beneath his skin, leaving behind a pattern of dark, pulsing veins. Heavy, rapid footsteps shattered his moment of shock. They were close. The Enforcer search party had picked up the biological energy spike from the kill. Blue searchlights swept across the canyon walls, cutting through the toxic haze. Red targeting lasers dotted the rocks just meters above his head. He was trapped in a dead-end ravine with nowhere to run, and the heavy thud of tactical boots echoed from the only exit. Panic, cold and sharp, gripped his throat. If they caught him now, they would dissect him alive, and Lin Xia would be left completely unprotected in the slums. Run. He had to run. But as he turned, he realized the exit was blocked by three heavily armed Enforcers, their rifles raised and hummed with lethal energy. Footsteps pattered from a side crevice. A young girl, no older than ten, stumbled out from a hidden gap in the rocks. She was an Outer Slum scavenger, carrying a sack of scrap metal, her eyes wide with terror as she realized she had walked right into a military sweep. She looked at Lin Xian, then at the approaching Enforcers who were already leveling their weapons to shoot anything that moved in the quarantine zone. Lin Xian’s heart hammered against his ribs. The Enforcers would kill them both in seconds. There was no hiding his mutated arm, and there was no outrunning their energy rifles. If he died here, Lin Xia died too. "Forgive me," Lin Xian whispered, his voice cracking. Darkness exploded from his left arm. The black tentacles lashed out, wrapping around the little girl before she could even scream. They pierced her chest, her limbs, her throat, silencing her instantly. Sliding beneath her skin, the parasitic mass did not just kill her—it began to hollow her out, expanding and reshaping itself. Lin Xian felt his own skeletal structure crack and collapse, compressing violently as the void-matter pulled him into her tiny, fragile frame. Bones snapped and reformed inside the grisly biological armor of her outer shell. He became a passenger inside her flesh, his consciousness controlling her tiny, blood-splattered limbs, hiding his massive, mutated body within her hollowed-out form. When the Enforcers rounded the corner, they found only a shivering, terrified little girl sitting in the dirt, clutching a sack of scrap metal. Step by step, the lead Enforcer approached, his heavy boots kicking the dust near her face. He lowered his rifle slightly, scanning her with his visor. "Just a rat," the Enforcer grunted into his comm-link. "No sign of the target. Only an unregistered trash-picker. Move out." None of them noticed the way the little girl's eyes flashed with a deep, bottomless black, or how the veins in her neck pulsed with a faint, blue light. Safe behind a pile of discarded shipping containers inside the transition gate, the disguise finally collapsed. The girl's flesh split open, releasing Lin Xian’s true body as he spilled onto the damp concrete of the lower districts, coughing up black bile. Slowly, he pushed himself up, his hands shaking violently from the sheer horror of what he had just done. He was alive, but the cost was etched into his soul. His sister's silver locket, which he kept in his pocket, begins to tarnish and turn black at his touch.
