Chapter 4 of 10
Commis Chef Double Agent

Soren Vosh stared at her, then at the mapo tofu that still steamed faintly on the battered plasteel table. He had to stay. Twenty-eight days until all this flavor, this vibrant, life-affirming treason, was incinerated. He couldn’t allow it. And he couldn't leave. The thought of returning to synthetic paste made the inside of his mouth feel like a dustbowl.
He pushed himself up, his limbs still trembling from the flavor-shock. “I understand the urgency of this… ‘Final Exam,’ Chef Rurik.” He forced his voice to sound professional, ignoring the tremor. “Your ambition is… startling. However, you cannot achieve this monumental task alone.” He pointed a finger at her. “I demand to be your sous-chef.”
Danica blinked, her spatula still poised like a weapon. “My… sous-chef? You, the fancy-pants paste peddler who just collapsed like a sack of synthetic nutrient-paste?” She snorted, a puff of steam escaping her lips. “What could *you* possibly bring to my kitchen? Your knife skills are probably only good for… dissecting synthetic algae.”

[NEW SYSTEM OBJECTIVE: MENTOR SOREN VOSH! REWARD: 'FLAVOR FUSION' SKILL!]
Soren’s jaw tightened. “My knife skills are impeccable. Precision. Efficiency. I can julienne a ferro-beet in less than a second, blindfolded, with a sonic blade.”
“A *sonic blade*?” Danica scoffed. “In my kitchen, we use steel, sweat, and soul! Show me your ‘impeccable’ skills then, Mr. Fancy-Pants.” She gestured towards a mountain of gnarled, sickly purple tubers – 'Gloom-Yams' harvested from the deeper tunnels – that Piotr was slowly, painstakingly peeling with a rusty scraper.
Soren retrieved a sleek, monomolecular vibro-knife from his coat, the blade humming almost silently. He selected a Gloom-Yam, his movements fluid and deadly efficient. With a series of precise, almost invisible cuts, the tuber was transformed into perfectly uniform, centimeter-long matchsticks. Each piece was identical, sheared with clinical discipline. He presented them to Danica with a flourish.
Danica peered at the perfect matchsticks, then poked one with her spatula. “Too uniform! You’ve killed the yam’s spirit! Where’s the natural variation? The love? This looks like something a machine extruded.” She jabbed her spatula at him. “You’re chopping like you’re trying to assassinate the produce, not prepare it for a feast! You’re not a chef, you’re a… tuber butcher!”
Piotr, who had been watching, snickered behind a stack of tins. Heat crept up Soren's collar. Master of the Void Blade, reduced to a common butcher by a diner cook. He had never been so thoroughly humiliated.
“Alright, amateur butcher, you’re on probation,” Danica declared, pointing him to a nearby chopping block. “Get to work on those Gloom-Yams. And try to put some *passion* into it this time! Imagine each yam is a rival chef who insulted your mother!”
Soren, gritting his teeth, picked up a heavy, blunt cleaver and started on another yam. His cuts were still precise, but now he imbued them with a furious, almost violent energy. Piotr watched, a faint smile on his face, as the Inquisitor struggled with the unrefined tools. The two of them, the clumsy double-agent dishwasher and the elite double-agent chef, worked in tense, competitive silence, surrounded by the stench of damp earth and cooking spices.
Later, as the diner began to fill with Orok’s hulking, cybernetically augmented crew, Soren discreetly fumbled in his pristine chef’s coat. He pulled out a tiny, silver comm-bead, no larger than his thumbnail. He needed to signal his superiors, delay the Purge. Just a little more time to understand Danica, to get her recipes. He nudged it under the lip of the deep fryer, hoping its metallic sheen would blend with the greasy steel.
Piotr, carrying a tray of used, grease-stained serving plates, shuffled past the fryer. He stumbled, a plate slipping from his grasp. Instinctively, he reached out to catch it, his hand flailing wildly. His elbow struck the comm-bead, sending it flying in a perfect arc. It landed with a tiny ‘plink’ directly into the bubbling, superheated oil of the deep fryer, vanishing beneath the surface in a burst of greasy foam.
Soren stared at the foaming grease. Piotr gasped. “Oops!”
[SYSTEM ALERT! IMPERIAL SIGNAL LOST! OBJECTIVE: AVERT SECTOR-WIDE CULINARY CATASTROPHE! CONSEQUENCE: DELAY IMPOSSIBLE!]
Before Soren could react, before Piotr could offer another apology, the thick plasteel door to the bunker-bistro imploded inwards with a thunderous *CRUMP*! Shards of reinforced polymer scattered across the dining room floor, sending a shower of sparks from the flickering neon signs.
Five figures, clad in black, armored plating and skull-like rebreather masks, stood framed in the sudden, gaping maw of the entrance. Their weapons, sleek plasma rifles and vibro-blades, were already raised, the targeting lasers dancing across the startled faces of Orok’s crew. Their leader, a broad-shouldered woman with a scarred bionic eye, stepped forward. “This is a raid, Orok! The ‘Crimson Vipers’ have come for your heads and your stash! And it looks like you’re in the middle of dinner.” She sneered, her gaze sweeping across the tense, hungry faces, then to the steaming hotpots.
Danica, who had been tossing a massive wok of sizzling oil and shredded greens, slammed the heavy metal down onto the stove with a resounding clang. Flames erupted, licking around the wok, amplified by a sudden, intense glow from the Manga Protagonist Interface. A fiery aura, visible only to her, rippled outwards, making the air crackle with heat.
“Listen up, Viper!” Danica’s voice was low, dangerous, cutting through the sudden silence. Her eyes, normally bright with culinary passion, now burned with pure, unadulterated fury. “I don’t care who you are or what ‘stash’ you’re after. But if you spill one single drop of blood in my dining room, if you interrupt my dinner service, I swear on the sacred spices of the Eldritch Kitchen… you’ll be banned. For life!”
The leader of the Crimson Vipers paused, her plasma rifle still aimed, her expression unreadable behind the rebreather. Her finger twitched on the trigger.
