Chapter 3 of 10

The Imperial Food Critic

“This… this is treason. Where… where did you acquire such a recipe?” Danica glared at the man. Treason? Was this some kind of advanced gastrodome slang? A wager, perhaps, disguised as an accusation. She knew this archetype: the haughty, self-proclaimed gourmet, convinced his palate reigned supreme. She had beaten scores of such rivals across the arena cook-offs of ‘Sizzle & Serve!’, each one another stepping stone to supreme mastery. She slammed her spatula onto the counter, the clang echoing through the bunker. “Recipe? I *am* the recipe, pal! What’s it to you, huh? Don’t like what you tasted? Think you can do better?” Her voice rose to a combative bark. The stranger straightened, his face impassive as granite. His gaze drifted from the sputtering hotpot to Danica’s rigid stance. “Your… methodology. It violates Nutritional Edicts. I am here to enforce compliance. A thorough inspection of your… preparation facility… is required.” His voice was low, landing like iron ballast. [CHALLENGER DETECTED! AN UNREGISTERED CULINARY JUDGE HAS APPEARED!] [OBJECTIVE: DEFEAT THE IMPOSTER JUDGE! DEFEND YOUR KITCHEN’S HONOR!] [REWARD: ‘CRITIC’S CRUSH’ – TEMPORARY GAIN OF +50% SPICE PROFICIENCY!] Danica grinned, teeth bared. “A ‘thorough inspection,’ huh? I get it. You want to see my stations in action. You want to see if my craft can stand up to your fancy regime… whatever-it-is.” She pointed a sauce-stained finger at him. “Fine! But this isn’t an audit. This is a Shokugeki! A cooking duel, mano-a-mano, right here, right now!” Piotr, who had been attempting to scour carbon crust off a wok, dropped his wire pad with a clatter. He looked between the fuming Danica and the placid stranger. “Sh-Shokugeki, Chef? Is that… is that safe?” The dark-eyed stranger narrowed his focus, calculation tightening his brow. “A duel. Very well. A public demonstration of your… methods. I agree.” He paused, surveying the cramped, steam-shrouded room. “As for my contribution, I shall present a dish crafted from standard synthetic nutrient-paste, elevated by proprietary taste algorithms. It will demonstrate supreme efficiency.” He drew a chromesteel cylinder from beneath his coat, its casing humming faintly. “Nutrient-paste? Ha!” Danica scoffed. “Bring it, pal! I’ll show you ‘efficiency’ when your tongue buckles under true seasoning!” She spun toward the walk-in cooler. “Piotr! Get me a cyber-boar shoulder, prime cut! And all the fermented bean paste we have left! We’re making Mapo Tofu that’ll melt this guy’s circuits!” The man stepped toward the line with fluid precision, unlike Danica’s charging pace. He took an unoccupied steel table, unlatching his cylinder with a pneumatic hiss. From within, he extracted miniature processors and a syringe dispenser filled with pearlescent synthetic goo. Working with the detachment of an autopsy tech, he extruded coiled threads of the paste onto a clean, heat-resistant tile. The outcome was a pastel-pink gelatinous cube: perfectly symmetrical, without a trace of scent. Danica was a storm of furious motion. Cast iron clanged against the burner grate, steam billowing as her cleaver hammered the cutting board. She minced the cyber-boar shoulder with rhythmic thuds, fat glistening under neon hum. Fermented bean paste, chili oil, Sichuan peppercorns, garlic, ginger—a pungent cloud filled the air, cutting through bunker grease. Speed lines shimmered across her vision, a faint golden aura outlining her hands as she tossed the wok, building a cyclone of heat and aromatics. [MOMENTUM GAUGE: CRITICAL! THE SCENT OF CULINARY DEFIANCE FILLS THE AIR!] [SPECIAL ABILITY ACTIVATED: ‘DRAGON’S BREATH FRAGRANCE’! ALL DISHES GAIN +10% AROMA INTENSITY!] When she finally presented her Cyber-Boar Mapo Tofu, it was a steaming, angry-red masterpiece. Crimson oil shimmered on its surface, the tofu cubes trembled invitingly, and finely chopped green cyber-scallions provided a vibrant contrast. The aroma alone was a physical entity, a spicy, savory fist that slammed into the senses, chasing away the pervasive dampness of the Gloomward Reaches. His pastel cube sat beside it, an artifact from an odorless void. He inspected Danica’s bowl, jaw set, then met her stare. “I shall taste first.” He took a small silver utensil from his coat and carefully scooped a single cube of tofu, dripping with chili-flecked sauce, past his lips. For one second, nothing. His face remained flat. Then his pupils contracted, his mouth dropped open, and a ragged groan broke from his chest. The silver utensil shook in his fingers. Sweat beaded across his forehead, gleaming under the neon tubes. His knees buckled, sending him hard onto the concrete. His pale coat pooled around his knees as he doubled over, cheeks flushed crimson beneath running tears, mucus, and red oil. He clutched his collar, gasping for air. “Impossible… A thousand years… of Ascendancy purity… shattered… by… by this…” he choked out, voice cracked with shock. [JUDGE DEFEATED! ARROGANCE CRUSHED!] [REWARD UNLOCKED: ‘GASTRONOMIC TYPHOON’ – ALL DISHES NOW HAVE A CHANCE TO INDUCE TEMPORARY DIGNITY LOSS!] Danica scoffed, a triumphant smirk playing on her lips. “Next time, pal, stick to your slop. Real food always wins.” As the fallen cook wheezed on the floor, a tiny brass glint caught Piotr’s eye near the counter legs. Kneeling under the guise of steadying the man, Piotr’s fingers scooped up the dropped disc. A surveillance transponder—unmistakable from his covert handlers. Piotr also cataloged the tailored weave of the man's coat and the stamped silver seal hidden beneath the lapel: Inquisitor Soren Vosh. Not a cook at all, but an elite hunter sent from above. Piotr’s belly rumbled, recalling the breakfast hotpot. He glanced at Danica, who stood triumphant, then at Vosh on the tiles. Piotr slipped the transponder into the bubbling stockpot behind him, watching it sink into spiced tallow where no signal would escape. Vosh hauled himself onto one elbow, his stare fixing on a crumpled sheet tucked under a loose floor plate, knocked loose when he struck the ground. It was an Ascendancy directive stamped in red ink. “Purge Notice: Gloomward Reaches,” he muttered, breath rattling. “Execution: Twenty-Eight Days. Total Incineration.” He stared at the remaining Mapo Tofu, then up at Danica. “Twenty-eight days… all of this… gone?” [SUDDEN DEATH ARC INITIATED! IMPERIAL PURGE PROTOCOL DETECTED!] [OBJECTIVE: AVERT SECTOR-WIDE CULINARY CATASTROPHE!] Danica leaned over and plucked the flyer from the dust. She read the block letters, nodding as her mind translated the jargon into tournament brackets. “ ‘Total Incineration’… ‘Culinary Final Exam’… ‘Twenty-Eight Day Countdown’…!” She laughed aloud, brandishing her spatula. “So that’s what this Purge is! The grand underground championship! A final test to crown the master chef of the Gloomward Reaches!” She crumpled the sheet into a tight ball. “Bring it on! I’ll serve up a feast so potent it’ll blow the lid right off this whole empire!”
