Checkmate in the Pits

Dante's accusation hung in the sterile air long after he stalked away. Down the corridor, her sire shouted curses as two guards dragged him toward the perimeter gates. Zariya stood alone on the rubber flooring, her fingernails biting into her palms. She needed hard data—concrete telemetry Dante could not brush aside.
She found Luka hunched over a console in the data analysis lab, surrounded by a constellation of glowing monitors. Empty energy drink cans formed a precarious tower beside him. His fingers danced across a holographic keyboard, a frantic blur of motion. The lab buzzed with a low, constant hum, a stark contrast to the silence Zariya carried.
“Sparky,” she rasped, her throat tight. He didn’t look up, his brow furrowed in concentration.
“Zara! Perfect timing. I’m almost there,” he mumbled, his focus absolute. “That corrupted black box audio file? It wasn’t just a simple scramble. It was… a multi-layered obfuscation, like a digital onion. Someone wanted this buried deep. Really deep.” He punctuated his sentence with a triumphant grunt, his fingers freezing over the keyboard. A small, clean audio waveform materialized on the main monitor, stretching across its width in sharp green pulses.
“What is it?” Zariya leaned closer, bracing her hands against the edge of the desk.
“It’s the full file. The *unfiltered* comms from your car. I managed to reconstruct the last few seconds before the crash. Just… needed a proprietary decoder I wrote back in my black hat days. Don’t ask.” He grinned, a brief flash of his usual irreverence, then his expression sobered. “Ready?”
Zariya nodded, holding her breath. Luka pressed a key. Static hissed, then a choked cough. A voice, hoarse and strained, filled the lab. It was Alaric Volkov. “—Marko! He cut the lines! Revenge for the buyout, the Rostova betrayal! He’s trying to kill us both! Zariya, the brakes! They’re dead!” The words were clear, unmistakable, punctuated by the shriek of tires and the sickening crunch of metal, then abrupt silence.
The syllables rattled in the quiet room. The late patriarch’s own voice, damning his trusted lieutenant. Luka stared at the readout, his mouth agape. “Holy… he actually said it. The old man, he actually named him.”
“Send it,” Zariya demanded, her voice shaking with urgency. “Send it to Dante. Send it to every official on the Apex Council. Now!”
Luka’s fingers flew across the keyboard, already drafting the transmission. “On it. Encrypted, redundant backups, sent to a dozen secure channels. No one can—”
Before he could finish, an alarm blared, shrill and insistent. Not from the audio, but from the network itself. Red warnings flashed across every terminal, cascading downwards in crimson code. “ERROR: SYSTEM INTEGRITY COMPROMISED. DATA PURGE INITIATED. WARNING: VOLKOV NETWORK UNDER ATTACK.”
Luka’s face went pale. “No! What the—? A worm? A full-spectrum data wipe! It’s targeting all historical archives, telemetry, comms logs… everything!” He slammed his fist on the console. “Someone’s scrubbing the entire system! They’re erasing five years of data! I can’t stop it! It’s too fast!” He watched in dread as the pristine audio waveform pixilated, fragmented, and dissolved into static.
“Marko,” Zariya breathed, the name a venomous whisper. He knew. He knew Luka was close. He was covering his tracks, leaving no trace. The digital proof, moments after its resurrection, was gone again. But this time, Zariya wouldn’t let it be buried.
“Stay here. Try to restore anything you can,” Zariya ordered, already moving. Her steps were brisk, purposeful, fueled by a cold, sharp fury. She knew where Marko would be. The empty garages, late in the evening, were his sanctuary. The place he meticulously prepared his next betrayal.
She found him in the vast, echoing silence of Sector Gamma, hunched over a workbench, polishing a custom-fabricated suspension coil. The scent of lubricants and metal hung in the air. He looked up as Zariya’s footsteps echoed, his expression a practiced mask of mild surprise. “Zara. To what do I owe the pleasure? Decided to get your hands dirty with some real components?” His smile was thin, edged with a casual cruelty.
“You wiped the network,” Zariya stated, her voice flat, devoid of emotion. She walked until she was directly opposite him, the workbench a narrow barrier between them. His eyes, usually guarded, held a flicker of something she hadn’t seen before: cold triumph.
“Whatever are you talking about?” Marko chuckled, wiping a speck of grease from the coil with a pristine cloth. “Volkov Dynamics has a robust cybersecurity framework. Perhaps a momentary glitch. Happens, you know. Technology.”
“Don’t play dumb, Marko. I heard it. Dante's predecessor named you from my black box. He said you cut the lines for revenge over the old buyout. My last comms flagged the faulty calipers *you* touched.” The words hung in the air, accusations heavy and undeniable. Marko’s smile didn’t falter, but something in his eyes sharpened, gleaming with a dark pleasure.
“Ah, so you finally put it together.” He set the coil down with deliberate care, his movements slow, measured. “Took you long enough, for a prodigy. Yes, the Volkov patriarch. He was a snake. Ruined my family’s manufacturing business, stole our designs, left my family destitute. My mother… she never recovered. He deserved to burn, Zariya. And you were just… a convenient accelerant.”
Zariya froze. It was a confession. Open, chilling, delivered with a detached calm that was far more terrifying than any rage. “The helmet,” she whispered, remembering the child’s racing helmet, the subtle, terrifying threat.
Marko tilted his head, a predatory gleam in his gaze. “Oh, the little souvenir? A thoughtful gift, I thought. A gentle reminder that some things, some people, are far too precious to lose. A boy, is it? Sharp little eyes. Looks just like you, Zara. Perhaps… a bit like his *other* parent too.” He chuckled softly, a sound that grated on Zariya’s ears. “Wouldn’t want anything to happen to him, would we? Such a fragile thing, a secret. Easily exposed. Easily… broken.”
“You sick bastard,” Zariya hissed, her hands clenching into fists. The rage that had been simmering finally boiled over. She lunged, but Marko was faster. His hand shot out, not to block her, but to slam down on a small, discreet button hidden beneath the workbench. A faint, almost imperceptible *click* echoed in the vast garage.
At the same instant, Marko twisted, bringing the sharp edge of the suspension coil up and across his own arm with shocking force. A thin line of crimson bloomed, stark against his pristine white racing suit. He stumbled backwards, a theatrical gasp tearing from his lips.
“What are you—” Zariya began, but her words died in her throat as the sound of pounding footsteps approached rapidly from the main corridor. A sudden, piercing wail tore through the air, raw and full of terror. “She attacked me!” Marko shrieked, clutching his bleeding arm, screaming in feigned terror. “She’s trying to sabotage the final race!”
The corner of the corridor rounded, revealing Dante Volkov, flanked by two security guards, his face a mask of thunderous fury.
