Chapter 7 of 10

The Sins of the Father

1.3k words

The syllables hung in the sterile air. Zariya felt her spine stiffen, stomach knotting hard. Her father. The man who taught her how to drive and how to distrust, often in the same breath. Dante’s gaze, now utterly devoid of the brief, unsettling warmth, was fixed somewhere beyond her, on the portal connecting the gym to the Volkov estate’s main atrium. The security alert, a soft crimson pulse on his datapad, had announced the unwelcome guest. Footsteps, deliberate and heavy, echoed before their source appeared. The elder Rostova was carved from old money and colder ambition. His tailored suit, a shade of dark slate, spoke of understated power. His silver hair, slicked back, caught the overhead lights. His eyes, the exact shade of Zariya’s, were calculating, sharp. “Zara. Or is it Zariya now? Heard you were back in the circuit. Took you long enough.” The patriarch's voice was a low rumble, laced with a false congeniality that made Zariya’s teeth ache. He ignored Dante completely, his focus entirely on his daughter, a possessive glint in his gaze. Zariya didn't flinch. “It’s Zariya. And I’m a Volkov driver now, if you hadn't heard.” Her voice remained razor-sharp. The visitor finally acknowledged Dante with a dismissive flick of his wrist. “Ah, young Volkov. Still playing games, I see. My daughter belongs on the Rostova team, not as a pawn in your vendettas.” Dante stepped forward, his posture rigid. “She’s under contract, Rostova. And her allegiance is to us.” “Allegiance?” Kirill scoffed, a sneer twisting his lips. “She has none. That’s her greatest strength, and her greatest weakness. Like her mother, always chasing ghosts.” He turned back to Zariya. “We have an opening, a new prototype. Your seat is waiting. Forget this farce.” Zariya felt a sudden, familiar surge of anger. Her throat tightened. “I’m not a car you can recall, Kirill. My life isn’t yours to dictate anymore.” “Isn’t it?” Kirill’s eyes narrowed, a cold fire igniting in their depths. “Do you truly think you can escape your bloodline? Or the consequences of your… choices?” He glanced pointedly at Dante, letting the silent accusation linger in the cold air. Her ribcage locked tight. Five years ago, the choices had been few, the consequences crushing. The image of a different night, a different man, flickered behind her eyes, momentarily eclipsing the present. *** The city lights of Neo-Veridian blurred outside the penthouse window, a dizzying galaxy of neon and chrome. Zariya traced the condensation on her glass, the hum of the city a distant lullaby. The Rostova family name hung over her, a suffocating cloak. Tomorrow, she would be back in the simulator, then the rigorous pre-race checks for the final Grand Prix of the season. The pressure was immense, a gilded cage she longed to escape. A hand, warm and firm, settled on her waist. Dante Volkov. Young, arrogant, and devastatingly charming. Tonight, he was just Dante, a fellow competitor equally burdened by expectation. They had snuck away from the pre-race gala, a spontaneous act of rebellion against the watchful eyes of their dynasties. “Thinking too much, Rostova.” His voice was a low murmur against her ear. He smelled of expensive cologne and something subtly intoxicating, like burning fuel and distant rain. “Let it go, just for tonight.” She leaned back into him, a rare, fragile moment of surrender. “Easy for you to say. Your family expects perfection. Mine expects… a queen on the grid, and a perfectly arranged marriage off it.” Dante chuckled, a deep, resonant sound. “Perhaps we’re not so different then. My own… obligations are equally stifling.” He turned her gently in his arms, his eyes, so often sharp with rivalry, now soft, almost vulnerable. “Sometimes, a king needs an escape, too.” Their lips met, a spark igniting in the quiet luxury of the penthouse. It was a kiss fueled by shared defiance, by the desperate need to feel something real, something unscripted. It was a brief, stolen night, an intoxicating rebellion against the lives chosen for them. For a few precious hours, they were just two young drivers, finding solace in each other’s arms, oblivious to the storm brewing on the horizon. *** That storm broke the next day, a cacophony of screeching tires and twisted metal. Zariya remembered the scent of burning oil, the taste of fear. The last race of the Apex Circuit season, the championship decider. She was leading, the Rostova Viper snarling ahead of the Volkov Dragon. Then came the alert. A sudden, crackling voice in her comms, distorted but unmistakable. “Zariya! It’s Alaric. The stopping line… it's failing! Marko’s ‘fix’… it’s a setup. Get out!” Alaric Volkov. Dante’s father. The head of the Volkov clan. He shouldn't have been on her comms. Cold adrenaline punched through her ribs, matching the roar of the engine. She saw hydraulic pressure plummeting, the pedal turning spongy under her foot. Marko Solin. Dante’s deputy. The name resonated with a chilling clarity. Marko had been working late into the night, supposedly fine-tuning the Volkov Dragon’s systems, including the complex brake regeneration. He had even tinkered with her own car after a minor pit stop issue. “What are you talking about?” Zariya yelled back, her voice tight with panic. “What fix?” “My folly, child. My own arrogance. Years ago… a deal with Marko’s father. I ruined them, Zariya. I broke his family to build mine. He’s taking his revenge. He tampered with both cars! You have to…” The transmission cut out, swallowed by static, then a sickening crunch that reverberated through the very chassis of her car. Zariya gripped the wheel, her knuckles white. The Viper was veering, a runaway beast. The track curved sharply ahead, a wall of unforgiving concrete. She had seconds. Her mind raced, sifting through Alaric’s fragmented words. Marko. Revenge. Sabotage. Both cars. He was trying to kill them all. Friction was gone entirely. Her final gamble was the emergency kinetic energy recovery system, a volatile, untested backup. It was a long shot, but it was all she had. “Hydraulics dead! Marko! He’s trying to crash us!” Zariya shouted into the comms, a raw plea meant for anyone still listening, for the Volkov team, for Dante. She knew, with chilling certainty, that the black box would record it. Then the world exploded. *** Back in the gym, the harsh fluorescent lights seemed to mock the vividness of the past. Zariya swallowed hard, the phantom taste of smoke on her tongue. Her eyes, still wide with a ghost of that terror, met Dante’s. Kirill was still talking, but his words blurred, a meaningless drone. “…a place of honor back in Rostova. We can erase this… unfortunate detour. All you have to do is come home.” “You think I’d go back?” Zariya spat, ignoring Kirill, her gaze locked on Dante’s. “After what your family did to mine? After what *he* did?” The ‘he’ was Marko, but her eyes held Dante’s, pleading with him to see, to understand. “What are you talking about, Zara?” Dante’s voice was dangerously low, his face a mask of disbelief. “My father died in that crash. Because of *your* treachery.” “Your father confessed, Dante! He told me Marko cut the lines on the cars, revenge for a betrayal years ago! My last transmission called out the faulty calipers Marko touched!” Zariya’s voice cracked, raw with the effort of finally speaking the truth, her greatest vulnerability exposed. Dante stared, his expression unyielding, a terrifying blend of fury and disdain. “A convenient lie, Rostova. A crude attempt to deflect. Marko has been with Volkov since he was a boy. He was my father’s most trusted advisor. And you expect me to believe your dying declaration, delivered five years too late?” He shook his head, a muscle ticking in his jaw. “Security! Escort Kirill Rostova off the premises. And keep him out.” He turned his glacial gaze back to Zariya, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. “I knew you were a liar, Rostova. But this… this is a new low, even for you.”
