Chapter 10 of 10
The Ultimate Face-Slap
1.2k words
The colossal, sickly yellow orb, veined with black like a cracked sulfur sphere, locked its unblinking stare on Tu Mingyu. He floated suspended in midair amidst chunks of masonry that tumbled upward toward the ruptured ceiling. Lian Xinyue screamed, a desperate, fading cry as she was ripped further from his grasp, her hands reaching out in vain. The world wasn't just collapsing; it was being *unmade*.
“No,” Mingyu snarled, the word a raw, guttural challenge to the very fabric of reality. His feet, planted firmly on nothing, began to churn. “Not like this. Not because some pompous old fool threw a tantrum.”
Lord Cangyan’s voice, a resonant roar, vibrated through the Spite Stick. “*Mingyu!* The rift gapes wide! You must anchor it, *now*! The Nine Heavens Dragon Form, focus every wisp of your intent—”
“Nine Heavens, my ass!” Guhai’s spectral form flared beside him, a sardonic grin splitting his face. “Kid, forget the fancy footwork. It’s an eye. Aim for the goddamn eye! And don't forget whose curse is actually holding this mess together!”
Mingyu felt the combined energies, a volatile cocktail of elegant technique and raw, destructive power, surge through him. His anger, usually a wildfire, became a focused inferno. He wouldn't let Qilin’s Rest become a meal for some overgrown eyeball, not when his friends needed medicine, not when Xinyue had risked everything, and certainly not when he still had so many arrogant faces left to slap.
He twisted in the reversed gravity, pulling himself into a tight coil. “Xinyue!” he bellowed, his voice cutting through the spatial shriek. “Give me a boost! Launch me!”
Even as she spun upward, she caught his shout. Her brows dipped, and her jaw set rigid. Bringing her palms together, Lian Xinyue spun a swirling vortex of frost between her wrists. Disregarding the shearing void-drag on her skin, she thrust both heels of her hands outward, driving a spear of concentrated frost straight into the soles of Mingyu's boots.
The impact was like a cannon shot. Mingyu, a screaming projectile of pure spite and fiery resolve, rocketed towards the monstrous eye. The branch, now a blazing rod of condensed fury, hummed with a resonance that threatened to yank his shoulders out of joint.
“Channel it, boy!” Cangyan roared, his voice sounding oddly proud. “Let every insult, every sneer, every injustice fuel the strike! This is the Apex Dragon’s Foe-Sunderer! With a stick!”
“And my anchor!” Guhai interjected, a smug satisfaction in his tone. “Make it hurt, kid. Make it *beg*.”
Mingyu roared, a primal sound of defiance. He saw the enormity of the eye, felt the ancient malevolence radiating from it, and understood. This wasn't just about sealing a rift; it was about delivering the ultimate, most spectacular humiliation. He was going to face-slap a cosmic entity.
The Spite Stick blurred into a white-hot streak aimed squarely at the vast, yellow pupil. He didn’t just swing; he *rammed* it, using the momentum of his accelerated body, the refined technique of Cangyan, and the raw, unyielding power of Guhai’s anchor. It was a perfect, spite-fueled strike, a culmination of every wrong done to him, every friend he protected.
The stick met the colossal eye with a sickening *squelch* that echoed through the collapsing dimension. The eye didn't just flinch; it *imploded*. A high-pitched, inhuman shriek, a sound that could curdle blood and unravel sanity, ripped through the void. It wasn't just a cry of pain; it was a cosmic scream of utter, complete *indignation*.
Violet light exploded outwards, followed by a shockwave of black fire so intense it swallowed the very edges of the rift. The spatial rending halted. The reversed gravity reversed *again*, slamming Mingyu and Xinyue back towards the now-stabilizing ground. The colossal eye, its pupil shattered into a thousand glittering fragments, contracted violently. The dimensional nexus, once a gaping maw, convulsed, shuddered, and then, with a final, mournful groan, snapped shut. It was over.
Elder Moqiu, his corrupted form still towering amidst the falling rubble, let out a choked gurgle. The shockwave of black fire, imbued with Guhai’s sealing magic, ripped through him. He didn’t just die; he evaporated, leaving behind not even ash, only a lingering stench of desperation and ambition.
Silence. Utter, profound silence, broken only by the settling dust and the ragged breaths of Mingyu and Xinyue. They lay sprawled on the re-solidified ground, disoriented but whole. Above them, a gaping hole remained where the sect’s grand arena once stood, revealing the startled, terrified faces of the surviving elders.
A surviving elder, his robes shredded and face smeared with soot, scrambled to the rim of the chasm. “Tu Mingyu! Prodigy! Hero of Qilin’s Rest! We beg your forgiveness for our blindness! You must ascend! Become our Sect Leader! We will rebuild, under your glorious guidance!” He bowed until his forehead cracked against the slate.
Mingyu pushed himself up, his body aching, the Flaming Spite Stick clutched in his hand. He looked at the groveling elders, at their sudden fawning, bile rising hot in his throat. These were the same people who had looked down on him, who had enabled Moqiu, who had let innocent disciples suffer.
“Sect Leader?” Mingyu scoffed, a dry, humorless sound. “You think I want to sit on your jade throne and listen to your sycophantic drivel? You can shove your ‘glorious guidance’ right up your gilded robes.” He leveled the smoking stick at the cowering man. “Where’s the prize vault?”
The elder stammered, “The… the prize vault, revered one?”
“The one with the medicine,” Mingyu clarified, his voice sharp. “The one I fought this entire farce for. Unless you want me to ‘guide’ your faces through the nearest wall.”
With a terrified squeak, the old man pointed toward a massive, reinforced door down the hall. Mingyu, without a word, strode towards it. He didn't bother with keys or intricate unlocking spells. With a single, furious kick, fueled by lingering adrenaline and pure disdain, the massive, iron-banded door flew inwards, splintering into a dozen pieces.
He vanished inside, emerging moments later with a small, intricately carved wooden box. He looked at Lian Xinyue, her face pale but her eyes shining with an emotion he couldn't quite name. He held out his hand. She took it, her fingers intertwining with his, a silent promise in the touch.
Together, they walked out of the shattered cavern, past the terrified elders, past the ruins of the Gilded Crane Sect, towards the horizon. The world was safe, his friends would live, and the faces had been slapped. Finally, peace. For a moment.
“Ahem,” the Spite Stick loudly cleared its nonexistent throat. “You know, after all that, a little polish wouldn’t go amiss. And perhaps a new hilt. This plain wood is rather… pedestrian, wouldn’t you agree?”
Mingyu just rolled his eyes, a small, genuine smile finally touching his lips. He still had a twig to the face to deal with, it seemed. And he wouldn’t have it any other way.
