Chapter 2: The Vizier's Cruel Smile

2.3k words

Grips of cold iron could not have bound her more tightly than the wooden stocks hidden beneath the altar. Ren clamped her jaw shut, her teeth grinding together until her skull ached. Beneath her heavy ceremonial skirts, her bare soles burned with an intolerable, writhing agony. A feather, light as a breath but sharp as a needle, dragged lazily across the sensitive arch of her left foot. Sweat beaded on her brow, threatening to ruin her immaculate, white powder. She had to speak. Thousands of eyes watched from the grand cathedral pews, waiting for the next line of the Sacred Oath. If she remained silent for too long, the priests would declare her unworthy. "By the eternal light of the sun..." Ren began, her voice trembling slightly before she forced it into a steady, melodic register. Another feather stroke scraped her right heel, swirling in tiny, agonizing circles. A gasp clawed its way up her throat. She swallowed it down, turning the sound into a sharp intake of breath as if she were merely pausing for dramatic effect. Pain would have been easier to bear. Pain could be met with stoic resolve, with the hardened defiance of a princess trained in the stoic arts of the imperial court. This, however, was a cruel, writhing torment that bypassed her defenses and struck directly at her raw reflexes. It demanded laughter. It demanded her body betray her mind. Every nerve in her body screamed for her to pull her feet away. But there was nowhere to go. Her ankles were locked tight in the wooden frame, a device she had never known existed until her feet had been guided into them by the ritual attendants under the guise of "sacred positioning." Silence stretched in the massive cathedral, broken only by the crackle of burning incense and the distant rustle of silk robes. The air was thick with the scent of myrrh and beeswax, heavy and suffocating. Ren felt the weight of her ancestors pressing down on her shoulders, their legacy demanding a perfection she was currently struggling to maintain. Her core wound, a deep and paralyzing fear of failure, throbbed in tandem with the tickling beneath her feet. She had always believed that she was the weak link in her family line. Her father had been a conqueror; her mother, a brilliant diplomat. Ren was merely the gentle daughter, tolerated but never truly feared. If she failed now, if she let a single giggle slip past her lips during the most sacred ceremony of the empire, she would prove every doubter right. Slowly, she shifted her gaze across the high altar. Her eyes bypassed the high priest, ignoring his heavy golden robes and the massive, jewel-encrusted crown resting on a velvet cushion. She sought the one person who stood just behind him, positioned in the prime spot reserved for the imperial advisor. Grand Vizier Valerius stood tall, his hands clasped neatly in front of his dark, obsidian-threaded tunic. His posture was a model of solemn devotion. Yet, as Ren’s eyes locked onto his, his thin lips curved into a barely perceptible, cruel smile. Dread, cold and heavy, washed over her. The realization hit her like a physical blow, striking deeper than any physical torment. He knew. He was the one who had orchestrated this bizarre, humiliating trap. Anger flared in her chest, hot and violent. The fear of failure that had gripped her heart for hours began to burn away, replaced by a fierce, righteous rage. How dare he desecrate this sacred rite? How dare he use her own body as a weapon against her right to rule? --- Memories of her father’s own coronation flashed through her mind, a stark contrast to her current nightmare. He had stood before this very altar, a mountain of strength, his voice echoing through the rafters like thunder. He had promised her, during his final days, that she possessed a quiet strength that would surprise everyone. "You have the heart of a true empress, Ren," he had whispered, his hand dry and fragile in hers. "Do not let them make you doubt yourself." Now, those words felt like a mockery. She was standing here, struggling not to burst into hysterical laughter because of a feather and some fingers. The sheer absurdity of it made her want to weep. Beneath the hem of her gold-embroidered gown, her toes curled and uncurled in a desperate, futile attempt to escape the touch. The wooden stocks were lined with velvet, but they held her ankles in a vice grip. There was no room to wiggle, no way to shift her weight to relieve the tickling. Every touch was magnified tenfold. The skin of her soles was incredibly sensitive, a secret she had never shared with anyone. How had Valerius found out? He must have bribed her maids, or perhaps watched her during her rare moments of relaxation in the palace gardens. She knew she had to endure. She had to show the court that she was strong, even as the tickling intensified. It was a test of wills, a silent battle between her and her invisible tormentors. "We pledge our blood to the soil..." she recited, her voice tight. Each syllable felt like a mountain she had to climb. Beneath the altar, the feather on her left foot dragged from her heel to the sensitive dip of her toes. Her toes curled instinctively, gripping the cold stone base, but the wood lock held them fast, exposing her soles perfectly to her tormentors. Whispers began to ripple through the lower benches of the cathedral. The nobles were noticing her pauses. To them, she must have looked like she was struggling to remember the words, or perhaps succumbing to stage fright. Valerius kept his gaze fixed on her, his eyes shining with a wicked amusement. He was waiting for her to break. If she laughed, she would violate the absolute solemnity of the ritual, an act of sacrilege that would legally disqualify her from the throne. Desperately, she tried to disassociate from her lower half. She imagined her legs were made of marble, cold and unyielding. She focused on the stained glass windows high above, where ancient emperors stared down with stern, unblinking eyes. Fingers joined the torture. On her right foot, five distinct, firm pressures began to drum against her skin. They walked up and down her sole, their tips wiggling with agonizing precision. "And our spirits to the eternal flame..." Ren gasped out, her hands clenching the sides of the stone altar so hard her knuckles turned white. The stone was cold, offering a tiny anchor of reality amidst the swirling storm of tickles. No one in the audience could see her struggle below her waist. The altar was solid marble, rising to her chest, shielding her lower body from view. It was a perfect, invisible prison. Laughter bubbled up in her chest, a hysterical wave that threatened to burst past her lips. She bit the inside of her cheek until she tasted copper. The sharp metallic taste of blood helped ground her, if only for a second. "You are doing beautifully, your Highness," Valerius murmured, his voice carrying just enough weight to reach her ears over the murmuring crowd. His tone was dripping with false sympathy. Fury lent her temporary strength. She glared at him, letting all her hatred pour into her eyes. She wanted him to know that she knew. She wanted him to see that she would not go down easily. Feathers on her left foot began to tickle her in fast, frantic strokes, scribbling across her arch. The torturers below were relentless. They seemed to sense her anger and doubled their efforts. Searing nerve endings screamed. Her body shivered, a visible tremor shaking her shoulders. She forced a stiff, unnatural smile onto her face, trying to pass it off as a look of divine ecstasy. "To rule with justice..." she continued, her voice pitching higher than normal. She had to pause again, sucking in air through her teeth. "And... and mercy..." "Is the Princess well?" a high lord whispered in the front row, his voice carrying through the quiet sanctuary. "She looks pale," another noble whispered back. "Perhaps the weight of the crown is too heavy for her delicate head." Stepping forward, Valerius raised a hand to quiet the crowd. "Her Highness is merely overwhelmed by the divine presence of the ancestors," he announced, his voice smooth as oil. "Let us allow her the time she needs to find her strength." "I am... quite well," Ren said, her voice shaking. She looked directly at the high priest, trying to ignore the frantic, agonizing wiggling of fingers on her right sole. "Then proceed, child," the high priest said, his eyes filled with a mixture of pity and concern. "The oath must be completed before the sun reaches its zenith." Ren looked up at the skylight. The beam of sunlight was shifting closer to the central golden marker on the floor. She had only a few minutes left. Hands beneath her changed tactics. The soft feather on her left foot was suddenly turned around. The sharp, pointed quill of the feather was dragged hard across her arch, scratching lightly but intensely. Soft barbs of the feather stroked the sensitive hollow of her arch, while the stiff shaft of the quill scraped along the heel, creating an unbearable contrast of textures. It was a calculated, agonizing duality that pushed her nervous system to its absolute limits. On her right foot, the fingers were relentless, tapping and wiggling against her skin like a swarm of insects, digging into the soft, fleshy pads just below her toes. "By the blood of our ancestors..." she choked out. The words were barely recognizable. Her body was rigid, her knees shaking so violently they knocked against the inside of her heavy skirt. "And the strength of our steel..." She forced the words out, her voice cracking. Valerius’s smile widened by a fraction of a millimeter. He knew she was at her absolute limit. He knew that one more push would shatter her completely. Whispers of doubt grew louder in the cathedral, filling the space with a low hum of tension. The nobles were getting restless, their initial respect fading into concern and suspicion. Duke Varian, a loyal ally of her father, leaned forward, his brow furrowed in deep concern. He could see that something was wrong, but from his vantage point, there was no sign of the hidden torment. "She is too fragile," one of the lords murmured, his voice carrying through the quiet hall. "She cannot even complete the oath. How can she lead an empire?" Sucking in a sharp breath, Ren fought back the tears of frustration that threatened to spill. She would not let them see her cry. She would not let Valerius see her break. "To protect the weak..." she whispered, her voice barely audible over the growing din. Fingers on her right foot began to stroke her arch with a slow, agonizing rhythm. It was a different kind of torture, a steady, relentless tickling that seemed to penetrate deep into her bones. Feathers and fingernails worked in perfect, agonizing harmony. Her left foot was not spared, the feather dragging along the outer edge of her sole, a light, teasing touch that made her whole body shudder. "And to defend the empire..." she said, her voice growing stronger. Crowds gasped throughout the hall. They could hear the determination in her voice, the sudden shift from weakness to strength. Valerius’s smile faltered. His eyes narrowed, his gaze shifting to the floor beneath the altar. He was clearly signaling his agents to increase the intensity. Ren felt the shift immediately. The hands below her feet became more frantic, their movements faster and more chaotic. "With my life..." she gasped, her voice cracking on the last word. "I... I..." she stammered, her breath coming in short, ragged gasps. Tickling became unbearable now. It felt like a thousand tiny needles piercing her soles, a burning, itching sensation that she could not escape. Her legs shook so violently that she had to lean heavily on the altar to keep from falling. Her hands gripped the marble edge, her nails scratching against the stone. "No!" Ren snapped, her voice surprisingly sharp when Valerius tried to step in. She glared at him, her eyes burning with a fierce, desperate anger. "By the law of the land..." she began, her voice shaking but resolute. Hands below her feet did not stop, the feathers and fingers working in perfect, agonizing harmony. A tear slipped down her cheek, cutting a path through the white powder on her face. It was not a tear of sadness, but of pure, physical exhaustion. She was fighting a losing battle. Her body was screaming for release, her lungs aching for the laughter she was forcing herself to hold back. "And... and..." she stammered, her voice dying in her throat. Looking up, she met the high priest's eyes, seeing his mixture of awe and pity as he held the heavy golden crown. "Princess Ren," the high priest said, his voice echoing through the vaulted ceiling. "The sun is reaching its peak. You must complete the oath, or the ritual will be void." Pressure was immense, the weight of the entire empire pressing down on her shoulders as she prepared to speak the final words. Just as a bead of sweat traced a path down her temple, a sudden, sharp pressure dug into her sole, and she choked back a gasp, a silent scream of agony threatening to tear through her composure.
