Chapter 1 of 3
Chapter 1: A Feather's Silent Torture
1.6k words
Sweat trickled down the back of Princess Ren’s neck, cold and heavy.
Heavy velvet ceremonial robes weighed on her shoulders like a physical burden.
Thousands of spectators watched from the high galleries of the cathedral, their faces blurred by the haze of burning incense.
This was her moment of destiny, yet it felt like a lamb walking to the slaughter.
Golden sunlight streamed through the high stained-glass windows, casting long, colored patterns across the stone floor.
Nearby, the imperial crown rested on a purple velvet pillow, its massive diamonds catching the light.
It looked incredibly heavy.
To Ren, it represented a lifetime of duty, sacrifice, and the terrifying weight of her family's legacy.
Valerius stood just three paces away, his gold-trimmed vestments catching the amber glow of the torches.
His thin lips curled into a microscopic, satisfied smirk that made her stomach churn.
She forced her spine straight against the high-backed wooden chair of state.
Her hands rested flat on the cool, polished obsidian of the ceremonial table.
Silence stretched across the massive hall, thick and suffocating.
Rules of the ancient coronation were unyielding, carved into the very laws of the Quexal Empire.
First came the Purification of the Earth, a silent phase where the future empress had to remain absolutely motionless and quiet.
Any sound, even a soft gasp, would invalidate the entire ritual.
Failure meant the throne would pass to the Grand Vizier as regent.
Memories of her father’s warnings echoed in her mind.
He had told her that the transition of power was the most dangerous time for any dynasty.
"They will look for any sign of weakness, Ren," his voice whispered in her memory.
She had promised him she would be strong.
She had promised she would not let their people fall into the hands of a tyrant like Valerius.
"Let the purification commence," Valerius’s voice boomed, echoing off the high stone arches.
Two hooded figures knelt beneath the heavy velvet drapes of the altar table.
Ren held her breath, keeping her eyes fixed on the ancient vellum scroll resting before her.
Her heart hammered against her ribs, a wild, frantic rhythm.
Suddenly, cold hands wrapped around her left ankle.
She did not gasp, but her fingers gripped the edge of the obsidian table until her knuckles turned stark white.
One of the hooded attendants slid her heavy silk slipper off in a single, fluid movement.
Seconds later, her thin cotton stocking was peeled away, exposing her bare foot to the drafty air.
Before she could process the sudden chill, the second attendant grabbed her right ankle.
Off went the right slipper, discarded with practiced, silent ease.
Her right stocking followed, leaving both of her sensitive soles completely bare.
Adrenaline surged through her veins, hot and demanding.
Something was terribly wrong.
This was not the purification ceremony she had practiced with her tutors.
Normally, the priests merely anointed the tops of her feet with holy oils.
She tried to pull her legs back, but her ankles hit a solid wooden barrier.
Heavy wooden clamps lined with thin leather snapped shut around her ankles.
They locked her feet firmly in place, securing them flat against a hidden wooden board beneath the table.
She pulled, testing the constraints, but her ankles were completely immobilized.
Her bare soles were left entirely defenseless, suspended over a dark recess in the platform.
Panic flared in her chest, hot and sharp.
She glanced toward Valerius, but his eyes were fixed on the vaulted ceiling.
His expression was a mask of pure innocence, though the slight twitch of his jaw betrayed his dark satisfaction.
He knew exactly what was happening beneath the heavy velvet tablecloth.
"Read the Sacred Oath, Princess," Valerius whispered, his voice dripping with false reverence.
Her eyes darted back to the ancient vellum scroll.
Her throat felt like dry tinder, parched and tight.
She opened her mouth, forcing her voice to remain steady as she began the first stanza.
"By the blood of the first ancestors, I, Ren of the Quexal dynasty..."
A soft, fluttering sensation brushed against the sensitive arch of her left foot.
Her breath hitched in her throat.
It was a feather.
A long, stiff quill was being stroked deliberately back and forth across her tender skin.
"I swear to uphold..."
Her voice trembled.
Another feather joined the first, tracing slow, agonizing circles around her heel.
A wave of electric, ticklish heat shot straight up her leg, pooling in her lower abdomen.
Her toes curled instinctively, desperately trying to escape the torment, but the clamps held her fast.
It tickled.
It tickled so much her vision began to blur.
A bubble of hysterical laughter rose in her chest, hot and demanding release.
She clamped her jaw tight, biting her inner cheek until the metallic taste of copper flooded her mouth.
Laughter now would ruin everything, labeling her as weak and unfit for the throne.
"To uphold the laws of the realm..." she managed to squeak out.
She forced her voice down an octave to mask the tremors.
Feathers moved faster now, darting between her toes and flicking the delicate webbing.
Her stomach muscles cramped as she forced herself to sit perfectly still.
On the outside, she had to look like a serene, untouchable empress.
Inside, she was screaming.
Every nerve ending in her bare feet was on fire.
The soft, rhythmic brushing was relentless, sweeping up her soles, swirling around her arches, and brushing the tips of her toes.
Tears pricked the corners of her eyes.
She squeezed her eyelids shut for a fraction of a second, fighting the desperate urge to squirm.
Valerius watched her, his eyes glittering with sadistic amusement.
He was waiting for her to break.
He wanted her to giggle like a child, to prove she was fragile.
Ren swallowed hard, her chest heaving as she tried to draw a steady breath.
"And to protect..."
A particularly sharp stroke against her left pinky toe made her leg twitch violently.
The leather padding muffled the sound of her foot striking the wooden clamp, but the shockwave rippled through her entire body.
She gripped the edges of the stone altar until her fingernails cracked.
Her jaw ached from the sheer force of her clenches.
Silence in the cathedral was absolute, save for her own strained breathing.
The thousands of onlookers saw only a young woman staring intently at a scroll.
They had no idea of the war being waged beneath the velvet tablecloth.
They could not see the two pairs of hands guiding feathers across her defenseless, hyper-sensitive soles.
"To protect the weak and..."
The feathers began a rapid, tapping motion, drumming against her arches.
It was an unbearable, torturous tickle that made her want to tear her own hair out.
Her hips wriggled slightly against the high-backed chair.
She forced herself to freeze, her face flushing a deep, burning crimson.
She could feel the sweat dripping down her temples.
Her breathing became shallow, rapid, like a runner at the end of a marathon.
If she opened her mouth to speak the next line, she feared a loud, hysterical cackle would escape instead.
She had to pace herself.
She had to compartmentalize the agonizing tickle, pushing the physical sensation into a dark corner of her mind.
"And administer justice with mercy," she whispered, her voice barely a thread.
Valerius frowned, his eyebrows knitting together.
He had not expected her to last this long.
He leaned forward slightly, his fingers twitching against his golden staff.
Underneath the table, the tickling changed rhythm.
The strokes became deeper, heavier, pressing into the sensitive hollows of her arches.
It felt like dozens of tiny, brushing fingers, never stopping, never giving her a second to breathe.
Her toes flared open, twitching spasmodically in their wooden locks.
She wanted to scream.
She wanted to beg them to stop.
"I dedicate my body and soul..."
A tear escaped her eye, rolling slowly down her pale cheek.
Onlookers likely took it for a sign of deep, religious devotion.
Only she knew the truth.
It was the physical reaction to a suppressed, agonizing fit of laughter that was threatening to tear her apart from the inside out.
Her lungs burned.
She was running out of oxygen, unable to take a deep breath without risking a giggle.
Those feathers were relentless.
They brushed up and down, up and down, tracing the outer edges of her feet, then diving back into the highly sensitive center of her soles.
Her voice failed.
She choked, turning it into a wet, heavy cough at the last second.
Valerius’s eyes narrowed.
He knew she was on the absolute brink of collapse.
She stared down at the ancient text, the black ink swimming before her eyes.
Only three stanzas remained.
If she could just finish those three stanzas, she would be crowned.
She would have the authority to banish Valerius to the furthest corners of the empire.
But her feet were on fire, tickling so intensely that her entire lower body was trembling.
"And I pledge..."
Her voice cracked.
She bit her lower lip, drawing blood.
The metallic taste in her mouth helped ground her, if only for a fleeting second.
The feathers tickled, tickled, tickled, a never-ending barrage of soft, maddening torment.
Her eyes, locked onto the ancient text, flickered with a desperate plea as a distinct, soft 'thump' echoed from beneath the platform, like a lever being depressed, and the tickling intensified tenfold.
