Chapter 4 of 10

The Syndicate Gala

Kresten staggered back, a choked gasp tearing from his throat as the silver-laced combat blade embedded itself in his deltoid. The intruder, a blur of dark leather and feral instinct, froze, pausing in confusion before lurching forward. The beast coiled to wrench the blade free, but Kresten moved with a snarl, seizing the assailant's wrist. His grip, surprisingly strong despite the wound, twisted the arm, forcing a guttural cry from the assailant as the blade remained lodged in flesh. Kresten didn’t speak, didn’t waste a glance at Cenza; his gaze, cold and predatory, was fixed on the intruder. “A… a distraction,” the killer hissed, trying to wrench free. Yellow pupils darted toward Cenza, then back to Kresten, terror replacing shock. “The sister… she wanted you dead for the gala. A clean kill.” Kresten’s lips thinned. “You are a fool to think Tarsia’s machinations would go unnoticed in my domain.” He exerted more pressure, a sharp crack echoing as the wrist bones gave way. Before the beast could recover, a sleek, suppressed pistol appeared in Kresten’s free hand. A single, precise shot. The killer went limp, collapsing to the floor before the copper smell reached the vents. Security personnel, moving with practiced efficiency, swarmed in, their weapons already raised. They dragged the corpse clear, spraying neutralizer over the tiles. Kresten stood, his breathing a little ragged, but his posture remained rigid. He ripped the blade from his shoulder with a grunt, the metal burning, then tossed it aside with disdain. His gaze swept to Cenza, hard and possessive. “An inconvenience, Cenza. Nothing more,” he stated, his voice tight with pain and annoyance. “The parasitic nature of our bond dictates I protect my assets, even from such pathetic attempts on their life. But do not mistake this for sentiment. You are still my property, my weapon. And tonight, you will be unveiled.” “Unveiled?” Cenza’s voice was sharp, a dangerous edge beneath her calm façade. She watched him, assessing his pain, the vulnerability the bond forced upon him. It was a weakness she could exploit. “My annual Tarnstead Syndicate Gala,” Kresten clarified, his tone dismissing her question as irrelevant. “An exhibit of power, influence, and the future of human-lycanthrope relations. You, my dear, are the centerpiece. Be ready in two hours. Do not disappoint me.” With a curt nod to his approaching medical team, he turned and stalked away, leaving Cenza alone with the scent of copper and his parting command. Two women, with sterile white uniforms and unsettlingly calm smiles, entered her cell. They carried an armload of obsidian silk, the weave drinking in the fluorescent light. “Mr. Kresten’s compliments, Lady Cenza,” one of them said, her voice smooth and devoid of genuine warmth. “He requests you be presentable.” Cenza watched them, her muscles coiled. Snare, who had been curled in a dark corner, stirred, its skeletal head tilting. She offered a subtle shake of her head, commanding the bone-fox to stay concealed. This was a battle she had to navigate on her own terms, for now. The gown was an exquisite torture. It clung like a second skin, woven from obsidian threads that accentuated the dark ichor pulsing beneath her flesh. The deep V-neck plunged, revealing the faint, almost invisible lines where the Sunken Anvil’s power had reshaped her. Every stitch, every fold, whispered of obscene wealth and Kresten’s possessive control. They bypassed iron restraints; the leverage of the bond and the threat of an open viewing were enough. They painted her face, styled her hair, turning her into a living, breathing trophy. A dark queen, bound by an unseen leash. “You look… spectacular,” one of the stylists murmured, backing toward the door. Cenza met her gaze in the mirror, her own eyes burning with a cold fire. “I’m sure I do.” The main ballroom was a cavernous space, a dizzying spectacle of polished black marble, shimmering crystal, and the hushed murmurs of Tarnstead’s elite. Edge-lit monitors projected footage of Kresten’s facilities, his weapon testing, his industrial empire. The air thrummed with a predatory energy, a barely concealed excitement that Cenza felt prickling her skin. This wasn’t a celebration; it was a hunt. Kresten, his shoulder bandaged but his suit impeccably tailored, stood at the room’s center, a dark god among his acolytes. He offered her his arm, his touch cool and impersonal, yet the familiar spark of the bond flared, a low thrumming beneath her skin. He paraded her through the throngs, an open declaration of ownership. The whispers intensified, then died down, replaced by awed silence as Kresten’s gaze swept over the crowd. Cenza kept her expression neutral, her mind racing, cataloging faces, exits, potential weapons. And then she saw them. Not mingling with the elites, but in a section cordoned off near a raised, circular platform: Bramus and Tarsia. They were clad in simple, rough tunics, their faces bruised and humiliated. Bramus’s once-arrogant posture was broken, his shoulders slumped as he knelt, staring upward in hollow dread. Tarsia, though equally disheveled, still held a spark of defiant venom, but even that was quickly fading. They were entertainment, trophies themselves, paraded for the amusement of Kresten’s guests. Bramus’s head snapped up, his eyes locking onto Cenza. His mouth fell open as shame and raw envy broke across his bruised features. His ex-mate, cast aside into the gutters, now stood linked with the city's apex predator, draped in wealth and radiating volatile power. Her dark gift, barely contained, rippled over her skin in a cold, umbral haze. His stare clung to her gown, pleading without words. The man who had been Alpha of the Sunstone Pack, now a groveling dog, was utterly consumed by the sight of her. Kresten tightened his grip on Cenza’s arm, a subtle warning. “They serve as a reminder,” he murmured, his voice low, “of what happens to those who stand in my way. Or betray their own.” Suddenly, a cheer erupted from the crowd. A human hunter, clad in reinforced ceramite armor, stepped onto the raised platform. He carried a vicious-looking stun-prod, its tip crackling with blue energy. Behind him, a reinforced cage containing three captive wolves was rolled into the center ring. They cowered against the bars, baring blunt fangs. The hunter jabbed the prod into the nearest captive, convulsing its ribs. Another crackle, another scream. The crowd roared its approval. Cenza’s control snapped. Her loyalty, fierce and blinding, was a weakness Kresten had yet to truly understand. The sight of innocent shifters, tormented for sport, ignited a volcanic fury within her. These were her kin, reduced to bait. She would not stomach it. A guttural growl tore from her throat, raw and primal. Her pupils flooded with ink. Kresten, sensing the shift, tried to restrain her, but it was too late. A concussive shockwave of umbral force detonated outward from Cenza's core. The reinforced glass barriers around the pen splintered, exploding outward in a deafening shower of razor shards. Chaos erupted. Screams of fear mingled with the cries of the injured. In the pandemonium, a pale skeletal shape detached itself from Cenza’s train. Snare scrambled toward an exhibit pedestal near the shattered ring. Claws scooped a fist-sized trophy—a pristine conduit core, humming with contained current—off the velvet cushion. As Snare leaped down, the pedestal's pressure plate triggered. A shrill, piercing alarm shrieked through the ballroom. “Automated lockdown initiated!” a synthetic voice blared from hidden speakers. “Lethal force authorized. Target designated: primary unauthorized magic signature.” Red emergency lights flashed, bathing the room in an ominous glow. From the ceiling, sleek, multi-barreled turrets descended, their optical sensors swiveling, locking onto Cenza. Targeting lasers converged, painting crimson crosshairs across her chest. Kresten, his face a mask of furious disbelief, moved with shocking speed. He ripped a specialized, glowing extraction syringe from a hidden compartment in his sleeve. Before Cenza could react, he lunged, aiming the needle directly at her neck.
