Siphon Blueprints

Kresten recoiled, his face a mask of sudden, violent agony. The sterile air of the high-rise suite crackled as the connection burrowed deep into marrow and muscle. He stumbled back, releasing Cenza’s waist as if seared, clutching his chest with a guttural sound that was more growl than gasp. Bramus, frozen in the doorway, watched with a flicker of satisfaction that quickly vanished, replaced by a fresh surge of terror. Kresten, the unshakeable hunter, was vulnerable. The bond had carved a weakness into him, undeniable and potent. Before Bramus could speak, a low hum permeated the room, and the argent-laced cell door hissed shut, sealing Cenza inside with absolute finality. Kresten straightened, his features composed once more, though a faint sheen of sweat clung to his brow. His eyes, like chips of glacial ice, met Cenza’s. They held a renewed intensity, a dangerous blend of furious calculation and something akin to awe. He now understood the true, agonizing nature of their connection. The bond wouldn’t just bind; it would demand. “The negotiations are concluded, Alpha Bramus,” Kresten’s voice was clipped, devoid of the previous condescension. “You have your permission to continue scavenging in the Eastern Slums. Do not return to my estate without explicit invitation. Your presence is no longer required.” Bramus, still reeling from the unexpected display of Kresten’s pain, nodded numbly, a servile bend to his posture. He cast one last, desperate glance at Cenza, his eyes pleading, seeking a recognition she would never grant. Then he turned and strode quickly toward the elevator banks, his footsteps fading into the opulent silence. Kresten watched him go, then slowly turned his gaze back to Cenza, a predatory glint in his eyes. “An inconvenience, as I said,” he murmured, more to himself than to her. “But one I will master.” He paused, then raised a hand to a wall panel. “Secure the cell. Enhance all restraints.” As the ventilation tone shifted in pitch, Cenza’s bone-fox, Snare, nudged her shin. His skeletal form, still held together by the lingering energies of the Sunken Anvil, vibrated with a faint, internal tremor. He needed more. The stray magic that had birthed him was fading, and without a constant source of raw, elemental metal, his fragile existence would crumble. “Go, Snare,” Cenza whispered, her eyes tracking Kresten as he walked towards a wall-mounted console. “Find it. Find the core.” Snare caught the intent in her motion and dipped his angular skull. He squeezed through the narrow gap between the metal uprights, his form unnaturally flexible, then vanished into the dark mouth of a ventilation shaft, his small, clattering movements swallowed by ductwork. His mission: locate the central power conduit that fed the entire fortress, a vein potent enough to stabilize his shifting form. Inside the cage, Cenza tested the reinforced bars. One section, near a recessed maintenance terminal, shimmered with a faint, almost imperceptible blue light. It was an older model, overlooked in Kresten’s pristine renovations, a relic from a previous owner. Her shadow-magic, a nascent, volatile force within her, prickled at her fingertips. Concentrating, Cenza pressed her hand against the terminal, letting a tendril of corrupted magic seep into the aged interface. The light flared, then flickered. A complex user interface, encrypted with multiple layers, bloomed across the screen. Kresten’s security was robust, but his arrogance had left a small, exploitable opening. He didn’t believe a shifter could possess such precise control. Lines of code scrolled, then gave way to schematics. Cenza's chest tightened. It wasn’t just a simple siphon. It was a massive, multi-stage engine, a monstrosity of alloy conduits and energy coils designed to draw magic not just from *her*, but to replicate and amplify it. The blueprint detailed a city-wide contagion system, a weaponized aerosol containing her extracted, enhanced shadow-magic, designed to suppress and ultimately eradicate shifter populations across Tarnstead. The scale of his ambition was horrifying. Her attention was ripped from the terminal by an audio chime slicing across the room. Kresten’s personal security monitor, usually reserved for external surveillance, activated. A face materialized on the screen, sharp and venomous. Tarsia. Her sister, perfectly coiffed, a chilling smile playing on her lips, looked directly into the camera. “Kresten, my dear hunter. I trust you found my gift… illuminating.” Kresten’s head snapped up. He had not anticipated this. “What do you want, Tarsia?” His voice was a low growl. “A seat,” Tarsia purred, her eyes alight with cold avarice. “In your new world order. I provide the coordinates of Cenza’s remaining loyalists, the last pockets of resistance in the Shrieking Weald, who believe she lives to lead them. You provide me with a territory, an untainted sector, and protection under your new dominion.” Cenza’s vision blurred with rage. Her sister, not content with merely exiling her, was now offering up her last remaining allies, her pack remnants, to Kresten’s hunters. The vindication Cenza sought, the crushing regret she yearned to see in Bramus, felt distant, eclipsed by the immediate threat of betrayal. A faint clang echoed from the eastern gallery, barely audible over Tarsia’s continued monologue. It was the distinct sound of a distant, fortified window being breached. Kresten’s eyes narrowed, shifting from the monitor to the direction of the noise. His hand instinctively went to a hidden holster at his hip. A dark, agile figure, moving with unnatural speed, burst into the main living space. It was a shifter, lean and muscled, clad in reinforced black leather, carrying a broad combat blade. An assassin. Sent by Tarsia, no doubt, a failsafe to ensure Cenza’s silence before she could expose the alliance or retaliate. The assassin launched toward Cenza’s cage, driving the blade straight for her ribs. But before the blade could connect, Kresten moved. With a speed that defied his human form, he lunged, propelled by an invisible force, and intercepted the blow. The cold edge plunged deep into his shoulder, a sickening thud reverberating across the floor as Kresten’s body, wrenched forward by the biological tether, physically shielded the very woman he planned to drain.
